It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I’m all smacked up on Chock Full O’ Nuts (ran out of Kona and figured what the hell, and to be honest, in a Bodum, this is pretty good coffee), I got my Heath Miller jersey on, the Steelers paraphernalia is all around the house, Tunch has been groomed and given his pre-game tuna, I have some bratwurst thawing out to grill at half time, a fridge full of Diet Root Beer, and I am officially game ready. I will now be an unbearable asshole as I worship all things Steeler.
And JSF and Punchy- the Ravens suck and you know who is a murderer.
Nom de Plume
the Ravens suck and you know who is a murderer.
Yeah, at least the Steelers suspend their rapists.
Actually, they didn’t, the NFL did, so never mind.
Comrade Mary
I know we’ve been begging for photos of you, John, but if you have a Terrible Jockstrap, let me just say there’s no need for you to ever, ever provide photographic proof.
(So what do the girls get as pre-game rituals, if Tunch gets his tuna and a grooming?)
Chyron HR
I can’t tell the difference between the pro-football posts and the anti-Teabagger posts.
Xboxershorts
Buffalo is on too, this Rochester native is hopeful that Chan Gailey can re-energize Trent Edwards and that CJ Spiller proves to be a game changer. Our D is our biggest question mark though.
And John, I did NOT need that graphic. The image is burned into my frontal lobes now and won’t go away. I can’t gain access to any brain bleach for 4 more hours.
Curse you!

Dixon shall devastate.

@Xboxershorts: Your words to the football gods ears, my friend. Gamechanger is exactly what we need.
This Bills fan is having the first opening day of 5 years without the Direct TV football package and will be forced to watch the Patriots (with a Patriots fan, no less).
Sigh.
But, the Bills t-shirt is on and proud.
Go Bills!
P.S. Boo-yah… Cower picks Bills over Miami as his upset.
Foxhunter
Good luck against my Falcons with your stand-in man Dixon.
Since my beloved UGA Bulldawgs are teh suck on defense, the Falcons may be my one hope at some good post season action.
And you were right about Bama’s RB. Check out the Gamecock’s Lattimore, too. He’s was breaking ankles in yesterday’s UGA/SC game.
Zam
@MikeTheZ: Agreed
eric
if a man acquitted of murder is a murderer, then i guess that makes you-know-who a rapist twice over.
John, I appreciate the Lewis hate, as a I Giants fan, his team whipped our ass in the SB, but calling him a murderer is poor form. As a Steelers fan, it is a wee bit hypocritical. In fact, given the Roonie’s supposed legacy of wholesome goodness, it makes them look even worse by comparison.
I figured you for Jack Lambert jersey more than Heath Miller.
pablo
Sorry John…..GO FALCONS!!!!!!
DougJ
@eric:
I’m not a fan of either team, but I am more convinced that Ben R is a rapist than that Ray Lewis is a murderer.
D-Chance.
Well, it should be an entertaining afternoon… watching all the prelim bums before the Main Eventers take the stage on national television tonight.

It’s one thing for a front pager to troll his audience, it’s quite another thing for all y’all to bite so damn hard.

As a Jaguar fan, I loathe both the Steelers and the Ravens, so really no dog in that fight for me. For some reason, the Jaguar player troubles all seem to stem from drugs in recent years. Anyways, I’m fairly certain that David Garrard will throw for less than 100 yards and get sacked at least six times. I’m still excited to get back to hating him and the coaching staff. I’ve missed the heartburn.

I think it’s pretty awesome that you were able to track down a recent reunion photo of the early 2000s Steelers. They haven’t aged a bit.

“So Geahawks!”
Ain’t nobody with a clue how they’ll do this season, myself least of all, after Makeover 3.0. At least we now know why Pete Carroll fled USC.

Football season is early, as usual. There will be plenty of time to watch after the important sport that ends in the World Series is over.
Until then, in absentia, Go Jints!

I fucking hate the NFL distribution policy… in So Cal we get Oakland at Tennessee, Carolina at the Giants, and Green Bay at Philly. There’s got to be a better game than either of those first two, right?

Also Cole, I just terrible toweled my cat. She’s learned to put up with it.

@BDeevDad: unfortunately, I’ve got cable. And I’m really not a big enough football fan to throw down extra money for a package. But I am so fucking sick of getting Raider games a decade after the left. At least we don’t get Ram games as much any more.

Seriously, DougJ? Lewis isn’t a murderer, only a sociopath@DougJ: Lewis was “only” an accessory to murder–he watched as his flunkies shivved some poor schmuck barber who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But a no contest plea got Ray-Ray out of trouble
and miraculously restored the barber to life…Big Ben just has a problem with the word, ‘no,’ at least according to the official reports of two women, and the corroborating accounts of many who’ve seen Ben in action.

The worst part of living in the Bay Area is the we have to watch the Raiders and 49’ers games every Sunday. In other words, BORING-ass football games every week. I’m almost tempted to buy one of those packages.
Oh, and by the way, my dad just bought us tickets for the Packers vs. Bears on January 2nd at Lambeau! That is going to be hardcore.

Name isn’t familiar. I grew up in Grand Rapids (still here), and graduated hs in ’83. There’s one name of a North Muskegon player I’d recognize if I heard it- a running back who matriculated to U of M- but that’s about it. North Muskegon’s a pretty small school, and they haven’t had a good football team since the early ’80s, iirc.
Oooh…The Lions take the lead.
martha
@stuckinred: I can’t either, only from the cold hard cash perspective. Lambeau is small, compared with Soldier Field. Can’t remember how many seats, but there’s a 20K difference I think. The Big 10 (12? 14?) like all the conferences now are all about cold hard cash and not much more.
martha

Andy K
@martha:
Lambeau seats 70K+. I think it’s bigger than Soldiers Field Over By Dere now.

John, stop being an ex-Republican smear monger. The real story of the Ray Lewis altercation came out during the trial. Three career criminals all wanted on felony warrants saw three drunk dudes with money and decided to rob them. They started by hitting one of them in the head with a bottle cutting the scalp to the bone (deadly force).
A fight broke out and one of the criminal attackers was killed. Self defense everywhere. If it was not for an opportunistic criminal mayor (who was convicted and did real jail time) there would not have been a rush to judgment and Ray Lewis would not have been vilified.
Celebrities should not receive special treatment but they should not be deprived of their right to self defense either. That is why the jury found them all not guilty.
Ben is a serial rapist in my opinion and I can’t cheer for any team that employs him.
Comrade Kevin

CT
You guys do realize that the two people Ray Lewis fingered were acquitted, right? It blows my mind that anyone still thinks the guy is innocent.
By the way, the mother of Terrell Suggs’s child filed a complaint against him last December for pouring bleach on her and his kid. She later withdrew it, because they’re trying to reconcile, but, you know, pretty much the same thing as d-bag Roethlisberger. Guy with a past history of legal problems gets in trouble with the law, again, but no charges ever pressed.
Yet no suspension for Suggs, no lecture from the DA, nothing at all. It barely made national news. Hell, most people here in Baltimore don’t even know about it. Because here in Charm City, we’re all part of the team. The justice system, the media, everyone plays like a Raven today, and if that means whitewashing the past history of horrible human beings like Lewis and Suggs, so be it. Maybe we’ll win another Supey Bowl, hon.
And then there’s the way the Baltimore media pretended like Ray Lewis’s 2007 SI cover story — the one where he says he’s a prophet for the second coming of Christ — never happened….

Deese are da Bears announcers I remember
“In 1952, Irv Kupcinet became a pioneer in the television talk show genre when he landed his own talk show. In 1957, he replaced Jack Paar on what would eventually become The Tonight Show.[5] Kupcinet’s own series ran from 1959 until 1986 and was, at one point, syndicated to over 70 stations throughout the United States.[3] The series garnered 15 Emmy Awards along with a Peabody Award.[2]
In addition to writing his newspaper column and talk show hosting duties, Kupcinet provided commentary for radio broadcasts of Chicago Bears football games with Jack Brickhouse (and popularizing the signature phrase, “Dat’s right, Jack”).

@S. cerevisiae: Really, if that is supposed to be the correct ruling, the NFL needs a new brain trust. He had at least 4 points touch and then rolled over before intentionally letting the ball go. Bears need to send the officiating crew a nice bunch of fruit for winning the game for them

Bucs are 1-0!
That’s among the funniest lines I’ve written.
Andy K
@NobodySpecial:
Neither of ’em deserved it.
mcd410x
That was a spectacular catch in the Detroit game. The fact that, if the receiver had thrown the ball down (or spiked it!) rather than use it to balance, it would have been a touchdown underscores what an amazingly shitty rule that is. Every part of his body had touched the ground.
What a shitty rule.
Andy K
Took the better part of the quarter and a pick, but it looks like A-Rodge has gotten the opening day jitters out of his system now.
NobodySpecial
@mcd410x: Not only that, but his hand actually landed out of bounds before the ball contacted the ground – that means the play’s over in any universe but this one today.
I can only take solace in the fact that the part-timer who overruled the call on the field will never ever ever get to work a postseason game for as long as Bill Ford lives.
