Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

The National Guard is not Batman.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

People are weird.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

We still have time to mess this up!

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Well, that didn’t take long, Andrew Leonard over at Salon pisses all over Obama naming Warren:

At first glance, the news seems sure to disappoint progressives who want Warren named as the first director of the CFPB, and are spoiling for a fight with the opposition over what would surely be a contested confirmation. Indeed, if Obama was looking for a way to define exactly what’s wrong with his presidency, he may have done it with this back-door, not-quite-an-appointment. Neither Obama’s supporters or opponents will be satisfied with this move — just as neither were happy with the health care bill or bank reform. It feels weak.

    Wanker.

Always good to see a little Tunch.

There was a Sharron Angle ad on the page when I came here. I know it’s nasty and mean to pick on peoples’ looks, since that’s one thing they can’t help about themselves. And I’m not really saying she’s ugly, so maybe you’ll all excuse me for this, but she sure is weird looking. Does anybody else think so? It seems like her mouth is just far, far too wide for her face. Every time I see her smile, or even open her mouth to speak, I’m just struck by how huge her mouth is, like it was borrowed from a much bigger specimen. She kind of looks like a muppet to me. Not any reason to vote against her; there are already hundreds of those. Just something I noticed…

Who pays for Health Care Reform? A (liberal) client of mine insists there’s a 5% tax on the rich (and he is) in addition to the tax increases when Bush tax cuts expire. I have perused teh Google but can’t find a straight answer. He is a Hillary voter who just doesn’t like Obama, and paying for HCR is one of his main reasons. I want to enlighten him but have to become enlightened myself first. And I followed the damn thing all the way through, and I still don’t know.

Any of you policy wonks willing to provide elucidation?

So thanks for Vegas restaurant recommendations to everyone who gave them last week… though I don’t believe I listened to anyone… but I didn’t make the reservations, so it’s not my fault. We ate at Fluer de Lys… it was really good, but pretty overpriced. Living in Boston I’m used to the expense of fine dining, but I don’t know if it should cost well over $200 for one person to get a four course meal with wine pairings unless the food is transcendent… which this was not (it was, as I said, really good though).

That said we did eat for three hours and I was with buddies I hadn’t seen in ages… so it was worth it in that sense certainly… but the cost of food seems pretty insane in Vegas in general. It seems like you have to drop at least $30 for mediocre food and a couple of beers everywhere on the strip.

    Hey there Juicers,

Your humble North Dakota correspondent is in need of help. I’m in downtown Pittsburgh for a conference, and need to track down somewhere interesting to eat/drink awesome beer.

Any and all recommendations appreciated! Figured this crowd would have some excellent ideas- there usually seems to be a good Pittsburgh presence here. And, it almost goes without saying, you people know your beer.

Why can’t I quit you, Andy? (This is why – his writing and his understanding of Obama’s presidency)

He is taking the responsibility of the presidency seriously, and people notice that. Hence his rather resilient polling numbers, given the broader public mood. I have made many criticisms but I remain of the view – very firmly of the view – that we remain extremely lucky to have him. And I think we will see his true mettle if the current GOP wins the House, which in many respects, I hope they will – if the GOP is to grow up, and take some responsibility for fixing the appalling mess they largely made at home and abroad.

Not the part about hoping the GOP wins the House though.

I logged in this evening just because I was suffering from Tunch Deficiency Anemia.

I’d send a photo of my roommate Fellini. But he’s all black and my man cave is under-lit.

He’s my second shelter roommate. He jumped on my head when the kitties were interviewing me.

I don’t mind the dog pictures mostly because it’s obvious they don’t bother Tunch.

Dogs are silly. And they lower humans to their level.

Kitties realize no human will ever reach as high as their level.

A man walks in and a dog thinks the whole room lights up.

The kitty notices the man flicked a switch.
