Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Everybody saw this coming.

When I was faster i was always behind.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Republicans in disarray!

Hopefully Florida lost their shaky play last week and will trounce TN.

Let’s see, first game, Florida was scoreless for a quarter, then they went scoreless for two quarters, so I guess today they wait for the fourth quarter to score. That would put them on track to go completely scoreless against Alabama.

Or maybe today will be the day they begin to not-suck.

I went down to T-Town last weekend for the Penn State game, or scrimmage, rather. Duke today, but next week starts a brutal 3 game run of Arkansas, Florida, South Carolina. We’ll see if my Tide have the cojones to repeat in a about a month.

Urban Meyer is an ass who runs up the score to prove he can, but if wants to lay 100 on Tenn. he is more than welcome to do so.

The Cal Bears were decent enough to schedule their ass-kicking by the Wolfpack for last night. I was able to switch back and forth between that, the SF Giants being shut out, and Emmerlich’s “10,000 B.C.” where the white man leads the colored people against the Semites. Every time I watch Emmerlich’s movies I always get the feeling that there’s some kind of reactionary racist message hidden in them. But at least the “good guys” won in the movie. Not so much in the world of sports.

    @Mark S.:

Sure, whatever. And Elizabeth Warren will have no power to hire and fire in her new position…Whoops:

Since rumors spilled out about her pending appointment, there have been waves of grumbles that she was somehow being sent to the corner to languish, which sparked several questions about the scope of her authority. Rest assured, this appointment is no symbolic gesture to flip off progressives or appear to be responsive. It’s the real deal. Warren again, in her own words:
    —
“I have authority to hire, fire, set direction, budget and priorities.”

This DADT repeal is a classic case of ‘Damned if you do, damned if you don’t”. If the military takes more than a minute to make contingencies and train the lower level management (from company down to squad level)the purity police bitch. If there’s just an immediate repeal and a gay soldier is fragged a week or two after coming out, the purity police bitch. Beauty.

    Mark S.

    September 18, 2010 at 3:06 pm

It’s not repealed until a bunch of conditions are met.

    1. The Secretary of Defense receives the “study.”
    2. The President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs certify that:
    – They have considered the recommendations in the study
    – DOD has prepared the necessary policies and regulations needed to implement a repeal
    – The implementation of the repeal is consistent with the standards of military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion, and recruiting and retention.

All fine and dandy, if they do it. Until then, DADT stays in effect. If they screw around and don’t do anything for a couple of years, President Palin and Defense Secretary Bill Kristol are under no obligation to ever send in the report, and DADT is still law.

Like we still have 10% unemployment? Most people still blame the Republicans for the shitty economy, but I doubt they’ll still think that way in 2012.

I went out canvassing this morning for my congressman, Jim Moran. Lots of people not home, but otherwise it went well. It’s a safe seat, but that’s only assured if we make the effort.

I’m getting lots of appeals to go work for Gerry Connolly next door, and he definitely has a much tougher fight, but I can’t bring myself to do it. Moran’s canvassing script highlights his support for health care reform and climate change legislation first thing (as well as lots of examples of bringing home the bacon); Connolly’s “issues” page on his campaign website starts with tax cuts (including being cited by the WSJ for his support of the Bush tax cuts for the rich), followed by his concern about the deficit. HCR gets a brief mention three-quarters of the way down the page. Literally the only reasons to vote for him are the ‘D’ next to his name and the fact that his opponent is a serious wingnut.

Speaking of Big Ten Network, you can watch a high scoring game this afternoon. Since the IU Hosers can’t stop the run, and my Toppers can’t stop anything, the final score might be 68-53. Bobby Rainey might run for 200 and Ben Chappell might pass for 400.

@sherifffruitfly: This dreadful outcome could be avoided by one simple thing: a successful Dean/Franken/Kucinich/Clark/Clinton/Grayson/Weiner/Feingold/Waters/Jackson-Lee/Sherrod Brown/Shirley Sherrod/Walter Mosler primary challenge.

But the problem this raises in turn is, is there any vehicle with a bumper big enough for the sticker that is in any way also environmentally responsible?

How the fuck did so many of you get beat with the stupid stick? Jesus.

Republicans cannot win jack shit in this day and age. They don’t need to. They can rely on the Democrats to tear each other to pieces and simply hand them a victory. I don’t want this to happen, and if I had my way, Republicans would never get near the levers of power again. I still hope enough Democrats can cease their pity parties long enough to go out and vote in 2 months to make sure that doesn’t happen.

And I hope in 2 years time, enough of you can get over your personal vendettas against Obama to turn out and vote so that we don’t get stuck with president Palin. I am optimistic, but I am not 100% certain. Having a false sense of inevitably like Nobody Special paves the way towards defeat. I prefer cautious vigilance.

    Well, this would be different:

The President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has offered to the Mayor of New York to buy a land plot, where the Islamic community plans to build a mosque, and to erect a world chess center there. . . “If this offer is accepted, the world chess center will be built in the form of a chess figure, the king, of glass and concrete, which will decorate the city of New York,”

Kirsan is a nutcase who is also the President (dictator) of the semi-autonomous republic of Kalmykia in Russia.

@eemom: I think he’ll win in any case; the only reason the district was Republican so long was that Tom Davis was really good at getting federal funding and was a pretty vicious campaigner. Connolly’s running against Fimian, who he beat last time. He doesn’t have Obama’s coattails this time, but he’s an incumbent now.

This is my dilemma as an activist in this election. I’m not unmotivated or demoralized, but my rep barely needs me, and the nearest one who kinda does, well, pretty much sucks. I don’t have much spare cash for better candidates across the country.

I guess I’ll spend most of my time maintaining my precinct, updating our voter rolls to keep us solid blue. Necessary work, but not as exciting as campaigning.

Still most Righteous Work, for which you shall rightly be blessed.

Hope you’re right about Gerry the Big Blue Dog pulling it off. Just makes me nervous seeing all these Fimian signs and knowing how closely purple the district is. Also the ongoing horror of McDonnell/Cuccinnelli weighs heavily on my mind.

Last Tuesday I went to Back To School night at my daughter’s HS and Fimmie had one of his grinning ghouls there standing outside the door and acting like she was handing out something relevant to the event until you got close enough to hear her say “Fimian.” I recoiled with a disgusted snort and a parting snarl to “leave us alone on Back to School Night” that I can only hope took at least a tiny bit of wind out of her wingnut sails.

@sherifffruitfly: Look, I doubt you will find anyone here who doesn’t think Obama is a heavy favorite to win reelection in 2012. The economy will be better, the Republicans will be crazier and he rarely does anything offensive to anyone who would consider voting for him. But saying he is the heavy favorite is very different from saying he 100% will be reelected. You just can’t know that. Many things could happen between now and then that aren’t foreseeable.

The most obvious one would be if the country slipped into a depression. It seems very unlikely, but then so did the severity of the 2008 crisis two years before it happened. It wouldn’t matter how calm and reassured Obama is, or how crazy the Republican candidate is. A president who leads us into a Depression is not going to get re-elected.
