Does that mean that we in the US are normal?
Somebody ought to tell the Swedes, “You folks are just like Americans.”
That ought to make they happy. [not]

It’s the same the whole world over,
It’s the poor what gets the blame,
While the rich gets all the pleasure,
Ain’t it a blooming shame.

Another export of American culture.

Their right wing are amateurs – why aren’t they investigating her countertops? Why haven’t they sent the flying monkeys to her home and work? Why haven’t they started a media “some say” campaign on how the slut* got chlamydia? Accusing her of politicizing her mother’s illness before an election – so 2000.

I can see that our American righties have now been challenged by the Swede’s. Great job, Sweden. Too bad Mother Teresa’s dead, eh?
Now, our righties will want to up the ante.
Let the unempathetic rightious insults fly, no matter who the target! Then, it will be the Swede’s turn. Then ours, then theirs, then ours, etc.
It’s the blog world version of MAD – Mutually Assured Dissonance.

You gave them the idea.

From this week’s Economist: Swedish politics
The strange death of social-democratic Sweden
A new sort of Swedish model appeals to the right, not the left

Chad N Freude’s linked article stated that the main reason for Sweden’s turn to the right was that the righties were governing competently. That just goes to show that they still have much to learn: our right wing abhors competence and they manage to get elected.

Tim, now tell the right-wing Swedes to hop around on one leg.
I’m thinking maybe you can harness your power for good…

Sweet Lord, the Economist printed a story about how Current Trends Show that social democracy is dead in Europe? My stars. Ring the coroner. It must be for real this time.
But putting aside how often they’ve cried Wolf, the problem is that the Economist is the same as many UK and US outlets when covering the party splits in these countries: they equate the center in these countries with the center in their own, and describe the left-right party horse race without describing the consensus between the parties.
And this isn’t because they’re stupid, because it’s hard to be stupid and write for the Economist, but because they want to give the benefit of the doubt to these countries as being reasonable, and the writers for these outlets do not believe that a consensus to the left of their own evident even-tempered and brilliant moderation is reasonable.
