Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Petty moves from a petty man.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Still feeling like death warmed over- I think this is the big one. I have a habit of ignoring minor coughs, colds, and letting them blow up, and mom is now convinced I have pneumonia. Feh. I’ll check with the doctor on Monday if I don’t feel better. I have spent 36 of the last 48 hours sleeping. Wake up, putz around, sleep for three hours. And I’m drinking a shitload of fluids. And Tussin.

All those things on my Netflix queue, and I am re-watching season one of Angel. I’m wondering what happened to a lot of the actors. Angel and Buffy and Willow and Darla and Lindsey all have recurring roles, but whatever happened to Spike, Drusilla (one of my favorite characters) and Xander. And the incredibly hot duo from Angel, Fred and Lilah?

Last winter my wife talked me into watching all of Buffy and Angel on DVD. I’m not a TV fan but I really enjoyed both shows. Although I wanted to slap Connor (Angel’s son) every time he opened his pouty, simpering little mouth.

    Hope you feel better!
James Marsters is in tons of sci-fi stuff ( and sy-fy stuff!) like Torchwood etc. You probably don’t recognize him without the platinum hair. The girl who played Fred was on Alias, then Dollhouse. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander, has has some problems with substance abuse but I believe he has a role on a police procedural waiting for him.

I was feeling under the weather today as well and I just finished watching the pilot of Buffy! Check out the AV club at the Onion, they are doing a series of recaps on Buffy and Angel by a writer who had not seen them the first time around.

I hope you don’t have pneumonia. It’s rough. I got a bad cold my first time in Honduras. I was about to come home for Christmas and I came down with a bad cold and sore throat the night before I left. By the time I got home, after spending all day in airports and on planes, the cold was even worse and I could hardly swallow.

But it was the next morning that it became pneumonia. I woke up and thought I was having a heart attack. That’s how bad it hurt. I could hardly breathe, and I was so weak I could barely walk. I was glad when t he doctor rold me it was pneumonia and that I hadn’t had a heart attack at 26.

I’ve had pneumonia before. You should see a doctor if you are having difficulty breathing, and are coughing up nasty greenish mucous. Pneumonia tends to start with a flu and goes from there. To me it sounds like you have a flu of some sort, perhaps H1N1? That one was a really mean virus to me. If it is a flu virus, all you can do is go through it, and make sure you match your Tussin to your symptoms. Don’t take too much Sudafed. That stuff will make you crazy. I hope you feel well soon.

    @Ross Hershberger:

After Firefly/Serenity I wonder what projects Joss has had in development.

Aside from DOLLHOUSE, actually his projects have been, for a while, in comics — notably giving BUFFY another season in that medium. The other film activity was a Internet-only one-off, DOCTOR HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG, which is…interesting, and ended up being pretty popular.

His work on other comics is likely part of why he’ll be directing the AVENGERS movie, which I’m very much looking forward to. The general hope is that it’ll led to big money, and him breaking into the big leagues, able to greenlight projects by his name alone. We’ll see…

@ John Cole, I once stopped what felt like a bad respiratory infection by working the lung reflex points, located on the palm of your hand beneath the middle three fingers. If you massage the area, including between the knuckles, you may find some very sore spots. Work those gently, and it can really help the lung issues. Reflexology is incredibly effective, I don’t know why it’s not more mainstream. I’ve even convinced my very mainstream, right wing mama.

Speaking of actors from the Whedonverse, did you notice that Jonathan from Buffy is now Danny on Mad Men? I kept thinking he looked familiar, but it didn’t click until he stood up, and I saw that Peggy dwarfed him.

Remember the episode where Buffy kept Jonathan from killing himself, and in the course of it developed a soft spot for him? (This was before the ingrate joined Andrew and Warren, the guy Willow skinned.) Giles asks if that means Buffy will accept Jonathan’s invitation to the prom, and she says, “Please, what am I, Saint Buffy? He’s like four feet tall.”

Okay, to anyone who ever thinks they have pneumonia, all I can say is get your ass to a doctor pronto. I’ve lost months of my life to that stuff. My sister almost died from it as a healthy 33 year old, because the urgent care in town couldn’t read x-rays, and told her it was a pulled muscle causing the stabbing pain. That was Friday night. By Monday morning she was in an oxygen tent in ICU.

I posted this on an earlier thread. Have had the same symptoms for nearly a week, finally went in to see the doc.

She diagnosed bronchitis. I am now on antibiotics, with occasional puffs on an inhaler and regular doses of Cheratussin (cough syrup w/codine). Feeling better already.

The other big thing that has helped has been using a vaporizer with Mentholatum added to the well. My chest is much looser now, my cough much less hacking.

Amy Acker also had a very small role (as a murderous wife) on The Good Wife. Her RL husband has a recurring role as a detective on the same show.

Vincent Kartheiser is one hella actor. I couldn’t stand Connor, and and at first would cheerfully have set fire to Pete on Mad Men. But Pete is now one of the few who seems to be becoming a genuinely better person as the years go by: both the writers and Kartheiser should get major props for the subtle character development.

Christian Kane, who played Lindsey, the evil lawyer from Wolf Ram & Hart (in Angel), is now Eliot on Leverage.

James Callis, who was Gaius Baltar on BSG, just finished a recurring role on Eureka – and got me to watch, as I wasn’t impressed with the show when I checked it out in its first season, but decided to give it another chance, because I like Callis that much.

Joe Morton, veteran of many a SciFi TV show and movie, and who I completely adore, is also a regular on Eureka.

It’s been very amusing, watching actors who got their start in Sci Fi (and an amazing number of them Whedon alums) turning up again everywhere you look.

Speaking of Whedon alums, if you haven’t checked out The Guild, with Felicia Day (and, in a special guest starring role, Wil Wheaton), I highly recommend it. It’s a web-only series, each episode about 7-8 minutes long, recounting the misadventures of a group of complete-nerd gamers. I don’t game, not at all, but that doesn’t keep me from getting a kick out of the show. And Felicia Day is, like, one of my heroes based on what she’s accomplished in RL. She started The Guild almost literally in her living room, financed it by credit card, and has made it a phenom by fierce act of will and non-stop work. (Even if you never heard of the show, you might have seen a music video a couple years ago, “Do You Want to Date My Avatar,” starring Day and the rest of the cast, as their game characters.)

@asiangrrlMN: I r contributing to ur learning. I consider this a spousal duty. My work here is done. Now I really AM going to bed.

P.S. Cyclone about to hit Taiwan. Hopefully this doesn’t affect the family back there too much.

@Steeplejack: I’d suggest going there. A little knocking boots session might just do you both some good. Trust us we won’t mind.

@Steeplejack: Heh. Yeah, I thought I’d put you out of your misery. I mean, I don’t know what the hell I’m thinking half the time, so why should anyone else?

@Steeplejack: You’re on your own, buddy!

Eek. (Seems to be my go-to comment tonight.)

I’m about to pack it in. Really tired, and I have to get up (relatively) early to interact with the bro’ man. He doesn’t seem to get it when I tell him that noon on Sunday is like 6:00 a.m. to me after working the night shift all week. Self-absorption is a wonderful thing–if you’re the one who has it.

Really enjoyed the Basement Cat stuff. I’ve got some pictures that I will revisit, and I will read up on the relevant theological sources. And I have to say that the Zen cat picture was a lucky find. I was looking for a specific B. Kliban picture but couldn’t find it, alas. But Zen cat is profound. And I found the “Do you have some time to talk about Ceiling Cat?” picture extremely funny. I’ll fax the credenza if you don’t agree.

    @Steeplejack:

Not to say I’m disappearing right away. Just like Cole, once I announce I’m tired and I’m leaving, I suddenly get a second wind and I’m ready to go until daylight. Maybe. Still catching up on some of the other threads. Just don’t know when I will suddenly keel over and conk out.

@Steeplejack: Cool that you and bro’ man can hang, but I hear you on the noon is way too early in the morning thing. Always glad to pass along the religion. I think I’m outie, though. Night. Have fun tomorrow/today.

Watching the world’s oldest democracy slowly commit suicide could indeed take a toll on one’s immune system.

    @bogart:

James Marsters will also be the bad guy on the new Hawaii Five-O this season, ….

Speaking of which: one of the regulars on that show will be Daniel Dae Kim, who pre-Lost played W&H lawyer Gavin Park.

I wish to add, since John Cole is so helpfully illustrating the importance of a functioning immune system, that vitamin D is the vitamin of the moment, and heading into winter is when we should think about supplementing.

At least, my winter weather doesn’t encourage sunbathing.

I liked Connor! And it seems my role on the internet is to defend his character and his storyline. So, bring it, if you will.

He was raised in hell, you’ll recall.

An x-ray will tell. Do you feel like there is a heaviness in your lungs, do you feel tenderness or soreness under your ribs? Get it checked out. I had pneumo 2 years ago, not fun. Took about two months after treatment for lungs to clear. Don’t screw around. OTC meds do jack. Was on Cipro for two weeks.

Bugs do not have gills nor lungs…they’ve a central tube or tracheal system that divides into more compact and more compact tubes through which air is forced by muscular action with the insect. Both are perfectly adapted to their habitats.
