Yay, I spent all day in an air conditioned (high temp in the 90s) coffee shop and finished a Perl lab!!
Boo for my boring life :(
Ailuridae
After a 40 year wait Chicago’s Red Line will finally extend to the farthest reaches of the Southside.
Made my day even though the Circle Line would have helped me and mine a lot more. Not quite this but pretty cool anyway
RedKitten
My husband just informed me that he would be highly entertained if Bristol Palin and The Situation started banging each other.
I’ve been giggling nonstop ever since.
Ella in New Mexico
Watching Rachel Maddow after two high octane beer cocktails, and ABSOLUTELY loving her incredibly sane and logical evisceration of Republican asshat Jim DeMint.
Oscar Leroy
Oh, so this is now the default position of Balloon Juice? Huh, I guess the various posters who excoriated me for holding this same view were wasting their time.

Here is what the next two weeks of cable news coverage will consist of:
Obama: Fox News is Destructive to America
RedKitten
@Oscar Leroy: Please…the REAL Oscar Leroy would never say “excoriated”.
Jackass.
MikeJ
@Amanda in the South Bay: Yell if you ever need perl help. Still my favorite language. Perfect for liberals. There is *always* more than one way to do it.
Amanda in the South Bay
@MikeJ:
Ironically, my instructor, who really is an old time UNIX/Perl guru from back in the day, hates that phrase.
Jody
Does anyone know what the sudden abundance of Firebaggers is about around the lefty blogosphere? So many folks squatting in other peoples blogs shrieking about how “THERS NO DIFFERNCE BETWEEN BOTH SIDES!”
It’s really bad over at Digby but I’m seeing it other places too. Just wondering if anyone knows what may have emboldened them.
Ailuridae
@Amanda in the South Bay:
Python >>>>> perl although both are cool, cool, cool. If you ever need help with either and can’t get to MikeJ let me know.
Also remember these letters; CPAN. Biggest time saver ever.
stuckinred
@Jody: Obama slappin liberals might have helped?
MikeJ
@Jody: I’ve noticed that rumproast has suddenly jumped to threads with 60 comments when in the past ten was a big thread.
Jody
Stuck: yeah, but this is different. I’m talking full-on Nadering.
Tho if people want to get their fee fees hurt and let the GOP run things again I suppose that’s their prerogative.

What you did was very spiteful, but it was also very brave and very honest and I respect you for doing that. But the content of what you said has made me hate you. So there’s a layer of respect, admittedly, for your truthfulness, but it’s peppered with hate. Hateful respect.
Steve
@Oscar Leroy: The fact that you hold the same position as John Cole hardly insulates you from the possibility of being wrong.
ajr22
Do you know what Rolling Stone said about African Child? They ranked it third behind AIDS and Apartheid on a list of the worst things ever to happen to Africa.
Jim, Foolish LIteralist
@Oscar Leroy: I hate Blanche Lincoln, and I was all for bouncing her in the primary, but…. your complaint is “Someone disagreed with me on the internet.” Really?
*I don’t think Halter was likely to win the general, and had he won, probably wouldn’t have been much better than Lincoln. Just MHO.
Gravenstone
Maybe someone else mentioned it earlier, but did the ActBlue link jump $10k in only one or two pledges? I seem to recall it being a hair over $20k at 200 pledges and now it’s $30k at 202. In any event, outstanding effort by all involved.
beltane
@Jody: Some of those commenters may be GOP trolls and not angry progressives.

Thread needs moar kittehs.

@Gravenstone #19:
As I suggested in a couple of earlier threads:
It’s like George Soros dropped by, or something!
Jim, Foolish LIteralist
@Jody: Which blogs?
At Salon the other day, there was some comment about how everything is Obama’s fault because if he were a “leader” all the Dems in Congress would have fallen into line. “If LBJ or Bill Clinton were president, we wouldn’t even be talking about this!”
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Not only did LBJ pass Civil Rights and the Great Society without breaking a sweat or making any compromises, now Bill Clinton was invincible. That’s what makes me so damn mad about all the whiners (yea, I said it). The Republicans have been fighting this war on the middle class, the working class, the poor and common sense for forty years (I don’t think Reagan’s handlers ever though their troops would go as far as Bush/Cheney, much less Palin and the ‘Baggers). Democrats–or at least, a certain subset of internet ‘progressives’–, having tried for eighteen months and found that it’s hard, it’s hard work, want to quit.
SiubhanDuinne
@jeffreyw:
(Alternative title for that pic: “Mmmm, Homer!”)
I adore his little aftermarket tail. Very Tunchian.
debit
@jeffreyw: HOMER!! God, I love that little guy.
Also, too, I can’t stand The Last Word. It bored me to tears last night and tonight I turned it off 30 seconds into the intro.
beltane
@Jim, Foolish LIteralist: Did any of those people claiming invincibility for Bill Clinton mention the sweeping progressive agenda he rammed down Newt Gingrich’s throat using the bully pulpit and the reconciliation process? That would have been good for some laughs.
SiubhanDuinne
@debit #25:
I know. Between Homer and that New Kitteh over to WereBear’s place, I can hardly contain myself.
I mean, a human person only has a limited capacity for cuteness.

@beltane:
@Jim, Foolish LIteralist:
Clinton remains the only Republican president I have ever voted for*. I’ll never understand why they impeached him.
*Welfare ‘reform’ for starters…

@Jody: FDLers have a new show in cable it seems. I was watching Lawrence O’Donnell and quoted several times FDL blogers.
Face
Missionary?
El Cid
@Anya: O’Donnell specifically had on both the sort of person Obama or others might be describing as ‘whiners’ and who object to that label as well as a counterpoint position which completely disagreed with the points made by Adam Green.
It might be tacky “this side vs. that side”, but it didn’t seem to be because O’Donnell was siding with FDL.
Suck It Up!
@Jody: apparently they are up in arms about so-called hippie punching and beatings from the WH. I think they like it. That segment of the left likes to play the victim.
abscam
@Amanda in the South Bay: Um, I thought you knit a dog…sighhhh.
John Arbuthnot Fisher
No one’s afraid of a Jeffrey.
El Cid
Arnold will now incur the wrath of the Koch oil boy funded TeaTard Revlodouche’n given this absolute smackdown of the oil interests funding a recall of CA’s carbon dioxide emission reduction law.
The Governator is a dirty freakin’ hippie.
General Stuck
REDS CLINCH DIVISION TITLE
Woooot!

@El Cid: I think O’Donnell’s sympathy lies with the firebaggers. He likes to advance the whole, “Obama is losing the base” crap. As though the Dem base only consists of affluent bloggers.
Jody
I don’t recall which other blogs I saw it at, but it’s gotten around. I’m sure several of them are GOP moles, but the number of other folks joining in the chorus is just bizarre. I mean, they HAVE to know they’re playing into GOP hands.
I understand people being upset with Obama and everything, but this is crazy.

@Ailuridae:
You might get a kick out of this vintage video from the CTA West/South line run from the 1970s. It’s the first of three parts, and is part of the Back In The Day series. There are links to the other three parts.

@Jody: Obama basically said what a lot of us have been saying: He’s not perfect, but you’re full of shit if you think staying at home on Nov 2nd is going to solve anything. Though he used terms like “taking your ball and going home” and “not serious in the first place.”
El Cid
@Anya: That would not be my position. Apparently you’ve not seen the occasions on which he berated liberals (or ‘firebaggers’ for that matter) for pushing for such impossible things as the public option.
O’Donnell is not the most consistent in his approaches and he can be a bit cranky in unpredictable directions.
John Cole
When the world slips you a Jeffrey, stroke the furry walls.
asiangrrlMN
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): I like ‘full of shit’ better, though I understand why Obama may not want to use it.
@jeffreyw: Homer is so adorable–and yes, he’s a very Mini-Tunchie.
Speaking of Tunch, Cole….
@John Cole: Um. Is it just me or does that sound pornographic to anyone else?
Suck It Up!
@Belafon (formerly anonevent):
I actually think this is the line that really got to them. They just won’t admit it. Obama called them out and questioned their commitment to moving this country forward. He was right to do that.
Steve
@El Cid: WOW. Is it okay to Godwin if you’re an Austrian too?
Ailuridae
This warrants a chuckle or a head scratch
Germany will make its last reparations payment for World War I on Oct. 3, settling its outstanding debt from the 1919 Versailles Treaty and quietly closing the final chapter of the conflict that shaped the 20th century. Oct. 3, the 20th anniversary of German unification, will also mark the completion of the final chapter of World War I with the end of reparations payments 92 years after the country’s defeat

@Ailuridae:
That Keynes, he knew a thing or two, huh? He was almost as shrill as Krugman.
Ailuridae
@Steve:
There’s a reason I have a Keynes tattoo on my shoulder blade.
Well not really. But the Economic Consequences of the Peace (here in a largely unreadable format) was my first introduction to his writing at 13 or 14. Its accessible (as are nearly all of his writings differentiating himself from most intellectuals of his time and later) and, of course, insanely prescient.

“We got the clap”
Love that movie, saw it twice in theaters.
Russell Brand is spectacular. Smart and funny.

Belafon:
Fuck. I wish they WOULD take their ball and go home. We’re depressed enough without these idiots pipe dreaming about GOP ascendancy magically invigorating progressives.
These jokers are crying that they WANT the dems out of power, so they’ll learn their lesson and tilt left. Or in some cases so the third party of their choice will be somehow empowered. Because that’s how it always works, right?
They don’t get it. All empowering the GOP is gonna do is empower the GOP.

Except for the Krugman appearance.
