Ordered some coffee from an organic place in Hawaii named Kona Comfort. It is a bit pricey, but they roast the beans on Sunday and ship on Monday, and it got here a couple of hours ago. I just brewed up a pot a little bit ago, and I think I might set a land speed record with my vacuum cleaner.

Man, pure Kona coffee is some of the best coffee on the planet. Thanks for the tip.

In other news Rick Sanchez thinks John Stewart is a bigot, and CNN is run by to many Jews. He also said “I am a complex human being, not some moron.” uhhhhhh.

My place next, plsthxbye?

Gosh, sounds like it arrives still warm.
Now I want coffee.

Here is five week old today Tristan in his Fortress of Cutetitude.

I hardly drink coffee and even I know Kona Coffee is some ridiculous shit. Enjoy, dude.

Kona Coffee is proof that there is a god and he wants us to be happy.

@WereBear: Mere letters on a screen can’t do justice to the sound I made when I saw that.

John you gotta try some of he small batch roasts from The Verve coffee roasters out of Santa Cruz, Ca. I am biased as they are my local coffee shop but they are considered one of the better roasters in the US. Expensive but oh so worth it.
WereBear
@Comrade Mary: Thanks, he is some weapons grade cute, all right.
At first, we attributed it to his age; I mean, it’s a sad kitten who can’t pull off cute when they are still too young to leave their mother.
But now we’ve decided it’s not our imagination; he’s got some serious charm going on. Like, now that he can eat his glop from a dish, he comes to us to have his glop goatee wiped off.
Smart little guy, too.
Trinity
@WereBear: cute overload! heart exploding!!

@WereBear:
So did Tristan come via mail-order as well? You’d think they’d use a bigger box for a kitten…..
@ John Cole:
Why the “vacuum cleaner”? You do know the ground coffee is supposed to go IN the filter, rite?
WereBear
@Jay C: I interpreted it to mean John is so overcome with adrenal fuel he is ready to pour his heart into cleaning something.
At this point, my imagination mercifully draws a curtain over the scene…
Jason
John, you should try roasting your own. Go to Roastmasters.com and buy some green beans. You can try using a hot-air popcorn popper to see if it’s worth it.
I have the Behmor $300 roaster and I roast beans fresh every few days. It’s astounding how much of a difference it makes, especially with a good espresso machine.
And green coffee is cheaper, too, so you’ll eventually make your money back. Key word there is “eventually,” though, since it’s only about $3 per pound cheaper.

The Kona Coffee website is all kinds of awful.

@Comrade Mary: Then mine. Cole, you could start up a whole new business if this blogging thing doesn’t work out for you.

@asiangrrlMN: Yes, I know how Cole likes to clean!
But ya know, he clean my house anytime! Casual Friday and all that.

I didn’t know John Stewart was a bigot until now.

The bass player in my band was the roaster at PTs in Topeka KS. Best coffee I’ve ever had. They’re online too. Can’t recommend them highly enough.
High quality coffee is like pharmaceutical drugs. You get a good, clean rush and no crash.

I had a friend who lived for a short time on a coffee plantation near Kona. He was free to grab whatever the coffee pickers left behind. I went to visit him and we could go out and pick the cherries and remove the beans from the cherries, soak them, dry them, then he would roast them in a hot air popcorn popper. The best coffee I’ve ever had by a wide margin.
Bella Q
ZOMG – Tristan is adorable. Is anyone else just horrified that the AAG in Michigan was permitted to stalk a student for so long without consequence? And now that he’s banned from the U of Michigan campus, surely that’s cause for termination?
Indeed I did take con law, and have defended some employment discrimination actions against governmental entities, but I’d have had NO hesitation to discipline him for that sort of nonsense.
WereBear
@Gus: That must have smelled awesome, too.

@WereBear: Any suggestions on setting up a litter box with just paper in it? Do I just line it with newspaper, or should it be shredded, or what? Hayfever Boy is going to need one when he comes home next week, because I’m supposed to make sure that he doesn’t get stuff stuck to his paw while it heals.
The vet says Eddie’s doing well. I hope to go in and see him later today. Meanwhile, he has refreshed all of his acquaintances in the boarding section of the University of Minnesota’s Small Animal Hospital, and even made some new friends. They love him over there. Last month, when I took him in for a dermatology appointment, the tech said, “Oh, this is Eddie. I’ve heard about him.”
I’m looking forward to having him home. (So is Ringling.) It sounds as if he’s well on the way to learning how to walk all over again all over again. I do figure that this has to be the last significant surgery for quite a while. At some point, I simply can’t afford to keep paying for expensive treatments, even aside from the question of how much it’s fair to put him through. Though, as long as he keeps eating everything in sight and has his normal amount of energy, it’s hard to see that it’s being fair to him to pull the plug.

I thinks pure Kona’s a little too smooth. I like to cut it 50/50 with
FrenchFreedom roast. Pretty good and cheaper to boot.andrewsomething
Dear lord! Their website needs some work. I was going to make an order based on your recommendation, but I can’t even figure out what the prices are or how to give them money…..
Luckily, that kitty pic up thread has stopped the pain in my eyes.

After doing some research, I’m putting a Bunn coffee maker on my Christmas list.
They have models where they won’t let the water touch the coffee, until all the water is at the perfect temperature.

When your wallet has recovered and you’re ready to order more, try the trellis-grown beans from Kona Joe. I visit the Big Island once a year, and I always bring back a 5-pound sack.

I just replaced a Mr Coffee drip coffee machine with a brand-spanking new Cuisinart and it made a world of difference. I love coffee.

Love Kona.
I consider one of the greatest perks to military benefits being able to buy 100% Kona in the commissary at Pearl Harbor for the low, low price of $10 lb.

@That’s Master of Accountancy to You, Pal: Yes, shredded paper should work fine. If your other cats want to donate just a bit of used litter to make the purpose if this new box clear, I’m sure you have plenty for the cause.
What on earth has happened to poor Eddie now?

Tristan, just adorable. So young and so teeny, but it still looks like he’s starting to work that feline attitude.

@WereBear (itouch):
He’s been diagnosed with allergies, particularly hay fever, but also dust mites. While we were trying to figure out what it was, including a two month food trial, he got a sore on his paw. We think it was from him chewing at a place that itched from the allergies. By the time we took it sufficiently seriously, it was infected and the infection had gotten into the bone. He had most of two toes on his remaining front paw amputated yesterday. They took them off at the second knuckle, so a bit more than you’d see in a declawing.
It looked really, really ugly by early this week. Open sores that wouldn’t heal. He not only couldn’t retract his claws, but they were crooked on his foot.
Eddie isn’t going to die so much as he’ll eventually run out of body parts. It never occurred to me that one could end up needing an amputation due to hay fever.
That's Master of Accountancy to You, Pal
@WereBear (itouch): Oh, and I’m not worried about Eddie figuring out what to do with the litter box. He has in the past demonstrated an ability to just not use one if it doesn’t meet with his approval. He’s remarkably tidy as these things go: he makes a neat pile of turds near the offending box, and pees right next to it. Fortunately, there’s no carpet anywhere in the house and most of it is tile, so it’s easy to clean up after him.

Those are my buddies at Kona Comfort organic Kona coffee. They have a hell of a coffee farming story: bought the farm from another friend of mine, and I drink their coffee every day. Damn good stuff. It’s hard to drink anything else anymore.
Thanks for the link, they could use it. Times are tough for small outfits like theirs, and they need all the help they can get.

I always thought Kona was a little mild, but then again, I’m drinking the blended stuff, not the 100% stuff.
Don’t scare the kids with the vacuum cleaner.
EdTheRed
I’m fortunate to live close to this place in DC. The owner roasts daily on-premises, and has Marion Barry-level connections with coffee growers worldwide, including more than one small-scale organic grower in Kona. So good. So very, very good.
Arclite
John,
Try Kauai coffee too. It’s about half the price of Kona and almost as good.
Fallenmonk
If you want to make that Kona coffee really shine get yourself a small French press. You know the little beaker thing with the plunger. Allows you to control the water temperature and also the amount of time the water sits on the coffee. I use a coarse ground and a brew time of 3 minutes. There will be a bit of fine grounds in the bottom of the cup but the taste of the coffee is well worth it. None of the drip coffee makers on the market get the water hot enough to extract all the essential oils out of the coffee and if you are paying for Kona you want everything it has to offer.

Do you think he might have some kind of immune disorder?
Matt - The Commish
When I was in Kona I had, easily, the best coffee I’ve ever tasted. Now, I haven’t traveled the world in search of the perfect cup, but I’m a little bit of a NorCal coffee snob and without getting into fancy-pants tasting talk this stuff was….on a different plane. I bought from the same roaster several small vaccuum packs for myself and friends (several small vac-packs being better for freshness than one big one).
A week or so after we got home I opened the first of my packs and brewed a pot. Still terrific, better than anything I could get near home, but a significant amount of the delicate aromatics were already gone. I closed that pack best I could, but when I brewed more from the same pack the very next day it had gone noticeably downhill.
Maybe 2 months after the trip, I opened the last pack. Even having been sealed all that time, in nitrogen-purged vaccuum, by that point it was only “good coffee.”
Two lessons learned:
– Freshness matters. A lot. Even when well packed, and for all coffee. But especially for fabulous coffee. Next time I will bring home less, knowing that a few weeks down the road it will only disappoint.
– The fresh local coffee alone makes a trip to Kona worthwhile. The fantastic snorkeling and proximity to an active and accessible volcano are just bonuses.
Chat Noir
@Fallenmonk: Agreed on French press coffee. A friend of mine introduced me to French press coffee back in 1998, saying that once you have it, you won’t go back to automatic drip coffee. She was right.
@WereBear: Epic levels of cuteness in the little package that is Tristan. I remember when my Hobbes was that age (and that cute). The cool thing about kittens is that they continue the act of cute as the grow up.

kona coffee is some good stuff, lately i have been on a kick with wanting something a bit more acidic, though i might go for some kona the next go around. i am working my way through some costa rican tarrazu at the moment…
if i owned a roaster(one of those, if i win the lottery type dreams) i would put mysore nuggets on sale the week of the elections…not just the name, the slightly salty taste goes well with an election that will be spun as unprecedented gop resurgence from the dead, regardless of what happens.

LOL Unfortunately I only get to the Pearl Harbor commissary about once every 5 years. Last time I was there was 4 years ago when my husband was on his way back from his deployment to the Gulf and they had a port call at Pearl for 3 days and I flew out from California to meet him. We will probably be there next summer to meet him (he’s going to a ship in Japan and the kids and I are staying in WI) for a family vacation. We thought we’d meet in the middle (or somewhere in the vicinity of the middle).
I loved Pearl, the visiting ship pier was right next to the Arizona Memorial. The NEX and commissary are the nicest ones I’ve ever been too (especially compared to the dinky little ones here at Great Lakes).

@That’s Master of Accountancy to You, Pal: Have you tried puppy pads? They work great for my kitty that just doesn’t like the litter boxes. You can fold them in half, and turn them over when one side is used.
A friend also told me about soft litter for rabbits – I think it’s called Critter Litter. I found some at evil walmart. It’s soft absorbant paper/cloth in shreds. It does absorb a lot of stuff and it doesn’t stink much (unless they drop a stinkbomb that no litter can help hide).
Good luck with your kitty!

Remember November
My folks had a place in Kona and we’d occasionally go down to Kealakakua/Cook inlet and visit Auntie Bessie at the Kona Coffee mill when I went to visit. First place I saw poinsettias growing wild by the roadside. Nowadays they grow coffee all over the Islands- Molokai and Kauai coffee are just as good yet don’t have the hoity toitynes of Kona.

I think they do that drip coffee thing that we south indians do. The best indian coffee is in the south.. and what makes it the awesome is not only the fresh coffee and a little bit of chicory, but the way they mix it. They agitate the coffee by pouring it from one glass to another, back and forth from full arm span to small. Just awesome. Of course, you have to have milk with it. Only philistines would ever drink that stuff straight.
I couldn’t find any youtube videos of it unfortunately.

Just ordered a pound of Kona; internet+debit card+fridaynightdrinks=Oh Noes! I am sure I will not regret this one though. A total of only $26 for some really good coffee, on the ‘new buyer’ deal sounds like win to me. Ka’u grown coffee is getting better-known these days as well. (Ka’u is the township that takes up the south part of the Big Island.
