We’re signed up for a ‘papillon play date’ — approximately two dozen people and three dozen little dogs. Including our three rescues, who will keep me & the Spousal Unit too busy for pictures, I’m afraid.
What’s everybody else got planned?

Aww, sounds like a good day ahead, Anne Laurie!
I have work in the morning and then am going to Belmont Park for the best day for live racing there- the Jockey Club Gold Cup day. Taking the baby with me for his first trip there as a separate person. After the race I’m meeting two friends who adopted three of the young horses rescued from Paragallo’s farm in 2009. They nursed the three foals back to health and are now trying to get them to the races. It’s a very long shot; the horses were neglected so young and their growth was stunted, but they’re doing quite well now and whatever happens, they will not be abandoned again. Anyway, after the race they’re finally revealing what the horses’ racing names will be. I’m ridiculously excited for them.

The weather in Atlanta has finally broken, I hope for good (well, for the season). Daytime temps now in the high 60s/low 70s. I can feel the difference in my own energy level and mood every day now. And I love this time of year.
A weekend of chores awaits, including making sure my car is in shape for a long road trip beginning mid-week. May have mentioned in passing that my 50th high school reunion is next weekend. I’m driving to Chicago (ok, Oak Park) for the festivities, then heading over to Ontario for Canadian Thanksgiving and a few days with the Canuckistan cousins before wending my way home. All to say that packing and laundry and car servicing and other vacation prep will dominate my weekend.
Have a good one, everybody. And AL, do take and post lots of Pap pix.
SiubhanDuinne
Duh. I tell AL to post lots of pictures, go back and read what I had *totally* missed before, “too busy for pictures.”
Linda Featheringill
Take your camera with you anyway. Please? You might luck out and have some time for pics.
[we patiently await your grace]

Sounds like a pretty brutal weekend – trying to escape from the location, being recaptured and sent back over and over until you finally build a raft to get off the island …
It is a Papillon play date, right?
djork
My cat got out last night, so I am freaking. Anyone have any advice?

Our house is on the Middle Tennessee Solar Home Tour today! So the spousal unit will be entertaining the dogs at the dog park for a big chunk of the morning while I am at home … otherwise it will be a Middle Tennessee Dog Barking Contest every time someone walks up the driveway. Oy.
Looks to be a great day for it, though. Sunny!

@djork:
Yikes. I’d be calling for him/her, putting up posters, calling neighbors, etc. Time is sorta of the essence on things like this.
Are there coyotes where you live?

@djork: That sucks! Last time mine got out, she was hiding nearby. I went out early in the morning and called while shaking her food bag and she came running.
djork
@Southern Beale:
No, I’m pretty much in Midtown Atlanta. No coyotes, but there are cars. She got away once before and turned up about 8 or 9 hours later, so I’m hoping the same happens. Needless to say, I haven’t slept much.

I’m a bit depressed today. One of my students was killed in a car crash yesterday. Still don’t have full details on that. And I’m going to spend a large chunk of the day sitting in the hospital with my BIL. My sister has Crohn’s disease and due to it, also has osteoporosis. Her dog knocked her down yesterday and broke her shoulder and her hip. She’s having surgery to try to repair it today. So I will be keeping the BIL company and talking him out of killing the poor dog.

@geg6:
Sending positive thoughts your way for your sister and the dog.
@djork: And for you and your cat to find his/her way home.
henqiguai
Anne Laurie, just wanted to say that the video clip was thigh slappin’ funny ! Where’d you find that thing ? Links have been forwarded.
Hmm. Two downers – geg6’s sister and the lost cat. Hopefully the surgery will be successful with quick recovery. On the cat – well, cats do that crap; fortunately my two are committed house cats (one of whom is currently stalking the mole spotted in the basement; which was apparently driven inside due to rain saturated ground).

Jane Austen’s Fight Club.
WIN.

@djork:
Good luck. One time I was out of town and the piece of shit boyfriend who was supposed to be caring for my cat “forgot.” Cat was gone for 2 weeks, and I’m in downtown Nashville so I was sure he was hit by a car. But I put up posters and a neighbor called to say she had him! Turned out he’d been living in her basement for a week. He was 2 blocks away.
Hope the cat comes home, you know, they have 9 lives and all ….

@geg6:
{{ hugs }}
Dang but that’s a full plate of suckiness.
djork
Update: The cat has been returned. She apparently wandered to a neighbor’s and scratched on the door until they let her in. Later, they saw me wandering around bleary eyed and calling out “little girl” repeatedly. Somehow, they correctly surmised I am not a pervert (overtly, at least) and that I was looking for the cat.
Happy days. My plans today now consist of the Atlanta BBQ festival.
Wag
Go ahead, hit me.
Obama’s strategy for the past two years????
eric
@djork: I am assuming the festival is not meant to punish your cat in some gothic production….congrats!!! much peace to your sleep tonight..hip hip hooray
SiubhanDuinne
@geg6: Terribly sorry about your student and your BIL’s wife. And for that matter, the dog, who presumably had no malice, just doggy high spirits. Hope you’re successful in talking your BIL down from his (quite understandable, but misplaced) rage at the poor animal.
SiubhanDuinne
@djork: Good news! Glad you and cat are reunited. You might think about bringing a tiny bit of BBQ home as a treat. Have fun at the festival.
JAHILL10
@djork: Open a can of tuna and start waving it around. Just the sound of the can opener working over a can of Chicken of the Sea usually brings my truant kitties running.

@soonergrunt: LOVE the Jane Austen Fight Club, especially the shot of the Dashwoods!
Getting a real haircut today after months of do-it-yourself home clipping. The head needs a corrective!
R-Jud
I’ve just finished my last training run of any significance before next week’s marathon, which means it’s time to carb-deplete in advance of carb-loading. Which will be done in Chicago, huzzah!
Mr. Jud is out and about until after dinner, the Bean is dozing on the couch; once she’s down I’m going upstairs to clear out closets. After that, I’ll attempt to give the nimbler of our two cats her antibiotics (upper respiratory infection).
Jane Austen fight club gave me a chuckle. Armando Iannucci (who wrote In the Loop, among other geeeeeeenius stuff), wrote something similar in an essay about “The Penguin Anthology of Fights” once.
geg6, so sorry to hear about your loss and the rough day you have ahead of you.
Redshift
Canvassing this morning, then going down to the rally in DC if I feel like I have the time and energy. Except that I still have to get a birthday present for my dad before dinnertime. Fortunately, a number of years ago he went from the standard dad not having anything he wants to only wanting “consumables,” i.e., food. I’ve got a couple of good ideas for that.
YellowJournalism
Jane Austen’s Fight Club seems more satisfying to me than Pride and Prejudice and Zombies would be. (Anyone read that? I’m always tempted to pick it up, but never have.)
R-Jud
@YellowJournalism: It was given to me as a gag birthday gift. I read one chapter and that was it.

@YellowJournalism (#27):
Does a college kid’s endorsement count ?
There are others in the ‘series’ and they all look intriguing. My problem is that I have never read those classics in the original, and I’m kind of retentive about being familiar with the source before wandering off into some nether-world of the bizarre; because understanding the source generally adds to the enjoyment of the satirical. Also too, I’m generally a hard-science science fiction fan rather than a Victorian romance (and horror) type. But I am being tempted.
ETA: I’m not the college kid; one of my daughters…

Here is a 100% foolproof way to get an incredible group picture of the dogs and owners:
Gather the owners, sitting on the ground, hanging onto their squirming dogs in a tight group.
Get on a tall object such as a table, aiming the camera slightly downward to get the whole group in the picture.
When it is time to snap the picture, the camera-wielded needs to make the most horrible shriek imaginable.
EVERY canine face will whip around to face the camera, ears will be at full perk, and heads will tilt adorably.
Snap! Perfect group photo of dogs!

@djork: Put up posters–use a bright/neon paper or poster board if at all possible. Use a clear color photo, again, if at all economically possible. Put REWARD at the top, use 1-2 heartrending sentences to describe your kitty & how much he/she means to you. Put them up everywhere you can, tell everyone around you’ve lost the cat. Take one to all the shelters in your area & beyond if possible; some people will call shelters if they find an animal, but not bring it in for fear of the animal being put down.
When we lost our Pomeranian for a few days (neighbor kid left the gate open), we did all the above & it worked, though it took 4 days. Probably the worst of my life, and that is saying something!.
Oh, and on the REWARD. Even if you can’t come up with tons of cash, offer one. You can always pay a rescuer off over a couple of months, if needed. It gains the attention of those who might otherwise say “meh”. I know to us animal people the idea is anathema, but to some, it is a great motivator.
Best of luck, my good thoughts are with you! Hopefully your truant will come wandering back with that cat expression of “oh, did you call?”

ok, that’ll teach me to comment without reading through the thread.
Congrats on the reunion, enjoy!!

Mrs. Legalize and I both have to work today. Which is better than the extreme alternative.

baking shit for my housemate’s tai chi group, writing an article and then spending most of the day taking pictures of events. About the only thing I really want to do is testing out the baking recipes. Not a satisfying saturday.

I would totally see that movie. It can’t possibly be more overrated and wankerific than the real one.

@djork:
Phew!
Julia Sweeney has a funny story in her book, God Said Ha! about going out in the evening to call her cat, Frank. One night, a guy walked up her driveway and said, “It’s driving me crazy that you keep yelling my name every damn night. What do you want!?”
PurpleGirl
Jane Austen’s Fight Club: I’d love a longer version, more of the story and if it helps any of the girls get their man. I’ve tried reading Austen several times and never get into the stories. But I like this video’s idea.
Geg6: Will think good thoughts for your sister and hopes she recovers fully; I hope you and the student’s family finds peace.
After 3-4 days of heavy rainfall in NYC, I’d heading out shopping – Borders for magazines and Trader Joes for food.
AL: After my friends began to find homes for retired racing greyhounds, I went with them once to a seluki meet to advertise about retired greyhounds. They let the greyhounds take part in a few of the dog runs/activities. It was a fun day and not as intense I thought it would be.

I have things I should do today, but I got a flu shot yesterday and feel a bit crappy. For some reason, it made my arm really sore this time, but getting the flu sucked so much last year that I didn’t want to take the chance this year.

I’m so glad that kitty is back! My cat spent three days i the neighhbor’s basement while I went demented. It’s all part of the cat person experience I guess.

Three dozen papillons?!!! OMG!
That’s more cute than my brain can handle. You must take pictures. Somehow.

Jane Austin’s Fight Club was made by a Mormon “youth” group in Santa Monica.
Emily Janice Card, the main creator, plays Fanny (tall, dark haired, often in a blue dress), and is the daughter of Orson Scott Card.
Bruuuuce
I am getting set to participate in Improv Everywhere’s MP3 Experiment Seven. Got the MP3, setting up the props and gotta get it onto my MP3 player, then make sure I get on the subway early enough (since the MTA’s digging on essentially every line). Should be fun.
Tonal Crow
Do any of the frontpagers have some time to write about the newest anti-privacy outrage? That’s x-ray backscatter vans, courtesy our federal government, used to search anything in their path for “bombs or contraband”.
And it’s not just a privacy issue. Even medical scanners sometimes cause x-ray overdoses via improper design, operation, or maintenance. Anyone wanna wager on how much less effort went into/will go into designing, operating, and maintaining these mobile scanners?
How ’bout we roll back the police-state “security” apparatus and use the savings for, you know, tax cuts?
maus
That video is incredibly hawt. Doubly so for the fact that they’re nice Mormon girls.
monkeyboy
@maus:
Not knowing any of them I cannot comment on their niceness as opposed to normal Mormons – they live in Santa Monica and some have or want to have Hollywood connections.
Emily Janice Card has already starred in the short film The Delivery (YouTube trailer) the cast of which includes some well known actors AND science fiction authors: Harlan Ellison, John Rubinstein, Orson Scott Card, Sir Michael York, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., Stephanie Zimbalist, Scott Brick, and someone who is a Dick Cheney impersonator.
