Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Come on, man.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The willow is too close to the house.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The only PBS-type show I really like is “American Routes” with Nick Spitzer. Sometimes there’s a little too much zydeco and Cat Power pour moi personnellement, but I love it anyway.

They’ve got Sonny Rollins on tonight, you can live stream it here. The best guest they’ve ever had, surpassing my previous favorite Jerry Wexler. The show has a cowboy theme and they inexplicably failed to discuss “Way Out West”, which has the greatest liner note quote of all time “get that cat way out on the range”. But he kills “Some Enchanted Evening”.

Plus, in case you missed it: ‘Progressives March on Washington for ‘One Nation Working Together’ — Thousands Rally in Support of Socialist Agenda — UPDATE!! Crowd Size Estimates!’.

I’m sure a few of these commies play saxophone.

I love American Routes. Nick Spitzer lived here and they broadcast out of KRVS for 6 months or so after Katrina.

That’s the only show you really like? Really? The British mystery series are fantastic. They did a special on Los Lonely Boys that was good too. In fact, it’s on again soon, this week maybe.

Listening to this show really makes me want to visit New Orleans again. I am going to try to go there in January.

I actually got to meet Sonny Rollins – though it was sort of on false pretenses. One day a friend asked for help – a halfway house for mentally deficient young women had been donated an intercom system but they needed someone to install it. So I volunteered. After finishing I was told that the whole house had been invited as guests to the Sonny Rollins concert that night and since they couldn’t pay me I could at least come along with them.

Great concert. And after, unexpectedly, our whole group was ushered backstage for a meet and greet and for me a handshake.

@DougJ is the business and economics editor for Balloon Juice.: We are going October 22 with about 6 other couples to celebrate all turning 40 this year, and we are all leaving our kids behind. We were dicussing last night what we are going to do, eat, drink, etc. I think Ellis Marsalis is playing that weekend.

You don’t like Mountain Stage? (BTW, is it PBS-type or NPR-type?)

If you’re talking PBS-type, I also can’t believe you don’t like Austin City Limits.

Both MS and ACL hit some low notes occasionally, but they get some high-quality performers.

I haven’t been able to catch my breath today, and I have no energy at all. I’ll go see the doctor on Monday unless I get worse, but in the mean time I’m comfortable and resting.
This is all a lead in to me talking in this thread about my favorite show, NOVA, of which I am watching episodes on line today. I have almost no interest in the OU/Texas game anyway. Just taking a break from watching the episode “Intelligent Design on Trial” about the Kitzmiller v. Dover trial about teaching intelligent design.

Nick had Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane on once and asked Jack where he got the bass line for “White Rabbit.” Casady, immediately: “Maurice Ravel.”

Sure enough, it’s nearly a direct copy of “Bolero.”

OK, music. I have decided to sell my record collection. I have a friend who is a collector and he’ll give my stuff a fair read and price. Some of it is as much as 45 years old and a good percentage is trashed but we’re thinking there may be some goodies in there. Poking around today I found some stems and seeds in a few of the double albums!

universal is also streaming the men’s race tonight. debating whether i want to stay up that late and spend the $10.

NOVA is great. E.O Wilson on today – amazing guy.

And his great story: “if only, when I saw the FIRST fire ants invading the US, I had gone to the authorities and told them.”

E.O Wilson … And his great statement, “God has an inordinate fondness for beetles.”

Wilson was quoting JBS Haldane (1892-1964):

He is famous for the (apocryphal) response he gave when some theologians asked him what could be inferred about the mind of the Creator from the works of His Creation: “An inordinate fondness for beetles.”
