Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

You cannot shame the shameless.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

The revolution will be supervised.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Sorry for the lack of posts. Lot going on today- food co-op today, steak fry for the volunteer fire department, and I had to spend several hours getting the leaves under control and doing basic maintenance on the house to get ready for late fall/winter.

Spent some time listening to a band I had not played in forever:

Enjoy.

    I LOVE LOS LOBOS!!

Los Lobos is one of the few bands that I could see perform live every single week, if only reality worked that way. Most bands, even if you really like them, seeing them twice or three times really is all you need. Los Lobos rock so damn hard, though, that really, every show is just awesome.

Damn, it’s been awhile, and they usually come to Chicago a lot — I’mma have to check out their tour schedule!

The leaves are just starting to turn here in central/east NC, so no issues with them just yet, but I really have to put up gutter guards next year if it’s in the budget. The ladder and leaf blower method just totally sucks.

    Los Lobos rokz!

    Speaking of leafy things

The 2010 Campaign Against Marijuana Program eradicated a record of 572,680 plants from Mendocino County. This was the most ever harvested from any county and was the first time Mendocino County broke CAMP’s 500,000 plant barrier. The CAMP figures represent only part of the total plants eradicated so far this year in Mendocino County.
    …
Mendocino County ranked first in the state in 2010 amongst the 42 counties raided. More than 4.32 million plants were seized in 2010, down slightly from the 4.46 million plants seized in 2009. The California Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement estimates the wholesale value of the marijuana seized at $17.2 billion.

I’ve seen Los Lobos a dozen times, but the first time was still the best.

May 1985 at Irving Plaza in New York. The first time they played in NY after “And a Time to Dance” came out. Also my 30th birthday and the day of my last final at NYU. I danced so much I had to put ice on my knees before I could go to sleep.

Their shows at the Greek Theater in LA are legendary. Everybody who’s ever gotten a scholarship to UCLA or USC, gotten off the Eastside, and made a little money shows up dressed to impress. Nine thousand people singing the chorus of “Volver, Volver” make a BIG noise.

Whether or not those sh0es will work depends on the size of your ankle. If you’ve got slender ankles then they’re good. If you’ve got big ankles then either the strap won’t fit or it’ll highlight the size of your ankles and that’s not a good thing. I’m thinking you must have attractive, slender ankles because if you didn’t you’d not be looking at those sh0es.

    @asiangrrlMN:
When did “shoes” become okay again to say? What did I miss? Oh, the excitement.

Those shoes might work because the ankle strap is thick. That could help offset the thick ankle issue. Do not go with a thin ankle strap because you’ll look the way a thin collar would have looked on her the day John Cole found Rosie. Collared sausage. Not such a good look.

It all depends on the strap. If the strap is at its last hole and is still cutting into your ankle, that’s not good. If there’s some give and it doesn’t look like you’ve added an ankle strap extender, then you might be okay.

If you haven’t worn ankle strap shoes before, get to a DSW or similar store and try on a few pairs. See what you think. I personally avoid ankle straps along with a few other styles.

    @asiangrrlMN:

And, I have a wide foot along with fat ankles and fat calves. Ugh.

Okay, what you’re looking for then is something that elongates your entire leg. That means not breaking up the visual from the leg to the toes, as much as possible. So standard pumps are good because you don’t have straps cutting up the sight-line, which makes your legs look longer and leaner.

To compensate for the general boring-ness of a pump, try something with some zazz at the toes. Feathers, sparkles, buckles, flowers, etc.

Another option to look for is a pair with a strap that crosses across the foot, i.e. goes from the inside ankle to the outside toe (or vice versa). The sweep of the strap creates a thinning illusion for your foot. Combined with a heel it definitely adds to the long/lean look.

If you want straps, look for the Mary Jane style with heels. The strap in the front is less likely to make your ankles look fat. Plus the strap will be functional and help the shoes stay on your feet. Bonus: Mary Janes were fashionable in the 50’s. Here’s an example.

4.32 million marijuana plants! Why do you know how many plants that is? If we seized one marijuana plant per second since Jesus was born we still wouldn’t have that much marijuana!

@something fabulous: I like the shoes, but did they do T-straps in the 50s? And, I want this dress! It has skulls on it, and yet, it’s so cheerful!

@Yutsano: Bwahahahahaha. It would fit my personality perfectly. This site is awesome.

I saw Los Lobos back in the day — I think touring after La Bamba, but the paled in comparison to The True Believers. The True Believers were Alejandro Escovedo’s band with his brother Javier. It also included Jon Dee Graham. Their first album was well received but they broke up after getting screwed by their record company. Some videos

@Yutsano: Aw, thanks, honey! That’s awfully sweet of you. Except, I checked the measurements, and they are for classic full-figured gals. My measurements are weird, so the dresses won’t fit right. Sigh. (Your wallet is safe).

@Tattoosydney: But we looooove you! And, did you really grow up on a farm?

@Crusty Dem: In that case you might have a new lunch spot. Or if you get stuck in the lab they deliver. I shall reserve other commentary for a later date.

@something fabulous: Yep. I do not have a classic hourglass figure or a pear shape or an apple shape. I’m just curvy all over, but only to slightly varying degrees. Too bad because the dresses are really cute.

@Yutsano: Indonesian food in general is fine, but I should warn you that their satay is but a feeble imitation of the Malaysian original.

I have tried satay in the USA — in 1995 at a pub/restaurant in Framingham, Massachusetts, on the way back to Boston from a media visit to a 3Com plant. Ye gods, it was awful. The spiceless “spicy” peanut sauce tasted like watered-down chunky peanut butter.

    @Dennis SGMM:

    It’s like this:

    1. Victim of totalitarian regime flees here.
    2. GOP says, “We’re your friends, unlike those DFHs who didn’t support your fight against the totalitarian regime.”
    3. Victim is not a DFH in any event and probably hates them as much as the GOP does. Victim is happy with any freedom at all and accepts the GOP argument that DFHs are useless and will cause us all to lose all our freedom to the totalitarians. Better a little freedom for the long term than lots of freedom which will all be lost soon due to low DFH moral fiber.
    4. Victim throws in with the GOP. Rinse, repeat.

You also saw this with some Soviet dissidents and emigrés (but not all).
