Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

The lights are all blinking red.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Come on, man.

Open Thread: Is Nothing Sacred?

The Epson, NH couple indirectly responsible for the Dumbest Libertarian Quote Ever have been reunited with their infant daughter, despite “shouting matches in front of dozens of onlookers” between the infant’s father, his father, and a private investigator… not to mention the “911 Was An Inside Job” tshirt prominently featured in the photo accompanying the news story.

But it would be remiss not to include this disclaimer from the organization whose protesting members first attracted the attention of the national media:

Garrett Lear of Wakefield, the national chaplain of the Oath Keepers, complained that Irish misrepresented himself, falsely leading people to believe he was a member of the group.
__
“He unfairly aligned himself with our organization,” said Lear, a cross on the front of his baseball cap.

The Oath Breakers pretty gleefully owned him when he claimed to be one of them. They get to keep him as far as I’m concerned.

Enter the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Field and Space Robotics Laboratory, which has developed and successfully tested a portable, solar-powered water desalination system that has the potential to save millions of lives the world over.

According to an affidavit, a judge determined in 2009 that evidence pointed to Irish as “the main suspect” in an assault of his fiancee’s oldest son, now 3. Taylor also has a 2-year-old son and is still married to the boys’ father. The children were subsequently placed in a foster home in Farmington, Irish said.

That little piece of information was left out of the other reports I had read. But, yeah, it was all because he was an Oath Keeper.

When you use a government to pass laws to dictate the norms of a family, it’s tyranny.

I just watched Friday’s Bill Maher. Markos Moulitsas was on there. He said almost squat and let the Tea Party nut dominate the entire conversation. He barely defended his book American Taliban and couldn’t even explain why it was fair to use the phrase given who would do what if they got power. Maybe it’s the TV cameras.

The idiot who drove to Tennessee to break a fellow patriot out of jail was, unsurprisingly, an oafkeeper.

Oafkeeper shamelessly stolen from this thread (h/t Litlebrit), which also has some of Mr. Irish’s greatest hits. It’s pretty surprising the doofus isn’t in prison.

    __
“He unfairly aligned himself with our organization,” said Lear, a cross on the front of his baseball cap.

Oh, sort of like how this guy unfairly aligned himself with the Teatards. Or how this other guy unfairly aligned himself with the Teatards.

I wonder if the Oath Keepers have hired Andrew Breitbart yet to produce a tape that proves that it’s OK for them to beat their children because a member of the Obama adminstration beat their children too. An anonymous source will soon provide Breitbart with a tape that shows Elizabeth Warren confessing to beating her children regularly. Fox News will air the tape and conservatives everywhere will be shocked and outraged and demand Mrs. Warren’s resignation.

Upon closer examination however the tape will be revealed to consist of nothing more than badly dubbed over outtakes from Basic Instinct combined with footage from Mommie Dearest and A Boy’s Life. Further analysis will reveal that the voice on the tape isn’t Warren’s at all but belongs to a female employee of Project Veritas. Andrew Breitbart will be shocked and dismayed and go on TV to say how disappointed he is in the source who gave him the tape and will threaten to sue anyone who says that he knows James O’Keefe and Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck will piously condemn the Obama administration for overreacting.

My brother told me of a colleague of his who developed a thermoelectric device to clean up wood-fired cooking stoves in the 3rd world. It uses waste heat to generate electricity. This powers a fan to add oxygen to the fire. The result is more heat from less wood and less poisonous indoor CO. Pretty slick. Made me feel lame for attempting to charge an iPhone from a candle and an ice cube with thermoelectrics.

Folks who are most outspoken about “government tyranny” are not generally objecting to the “tyranny” part as much as the “government” part. The “government” being anyone who’s not them.
