Why is Lord Saletan even interested in the Juan Williams bigotry? What does that have to do with scolding women about the proper use of their uterus and doing thought pieces on the justifications for killing abortion providers. I’m confused. Is he branching out?
And why does Slate still exist?
brendancalling
it’s a little known fact that Juan Williams actually has a vagina.
hence Saletan’s interest.

Because everyone’s talking about it today and it’s a way to bash Democrats without talking about them specifically.
I have no idea why Slate exists. I haven’t read it for years. Occasionally I click on a link to it without realizing it, then skim around for about five minutes and close the tab. Nothing there I want to read. Nothing at all.

For me, Slate exists mostly as an ingrained route to the Daily Doonesbury.
And I like Cary Tennis.

Smashcut to a new post on Slate arguing that though others question its purpose, it should exist and be read, because it’s contrarian POV is actually underrated. In point of fact, they are the Nickelback or Limp Bizkit, if you will, of websites.

Apart from the Mad Men recaps, Slate is just the holding pen for future WaPo
hackscolumnists. Dionne, Will and Krauthammer won’t live forever.Otherwise, it’s one hack defending another hack, and fills Saletan’s daily scold quota.

Good God–how many posts have you all done on this story already? Slow day?
This seems odd as a firing offense in today’s climate, just because it seems he and others say similar and worse without being fired, but on the other hand, I think he should have been fired for being on Fox “News” in the first place, so I’m shedding no tears.

And why does Slate still exist?
Momentum. It was an early-mover and had some decent writers. And there’s still some good articles amongst the garbage. But it wouldn’t last more than six months if it was a new publication in today’s online environment.

@Glenndacious Greenwaldian (formerly tim):
Surely he writes for Salon?

I liked his series on buttfucking. If only because the idea of a semi-scholarly sounding column on buttfucking is funny.

Mad Men reviews and Dear Prudence. Otherwise, forget it.

Slate exists because it has the best coverage of the US Supreme Court. Without Dahlia Lithwick following that body would be desperately depressing, and require us to read much more banal writing.

@Scott:
You assume Dalia Lithwick couldn’t find another place to write for.
Erik Vanderhoff
You forgot Saletan’s full-throated defense of Watson’s “genetic inferiority of minorities” bullshit from a few years ago.

OT but interesting:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/21/new-ad-features-criticism-of-conways-aqua-buddha-spot/?ref=politics
Republican criticism of Conway’s aqua buddha ad.
Will it be effective?
Or will it just keep the original ad on everybody’s mind?
Even if people think that Conway went too far, that won’t keep them from thinking that Paul is a bit strange.
And I don’t think that the people of Kentucky will be shocked that a little religion [or lack of it] was injected into a campaign.

“Slate?” Never heard of it. Sounds like a credit card or a restaurant or something.

@Violet: Dalia Lithwick is good, and I like the consumer reviews and advice columns. Their political stuff is shit.
Arclite
I love online journalism, but honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever been to Slate. Not once.

Dalia Lithwick. She moves, Slate crumbles (I can’t read it anymore but will sometimes follow links to her stuff there).
