Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

This blog will pay for itself.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

This really is a full service blog.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Consistently wrong since 2002

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Books are my comfort food!

People are complicated. Love is not.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

In after Baud. Damn.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

JenJen’s Bengals will go down to a humiliating defeat, on their own field, on prime time television, before millions.

That is my story and I am sticking to it. GO STEELERS!

Ugh. Six more concussion-packed months until baseball. I’m already in withdrawal.

Slightly off topic, but related to “tonight’s entertainment” . . .

    DVR Alert!

Turner Classic Movies continues to bring it with the thunder on the silent movie front. At 12:15 a.m. tonight (EST): The Birth of a Nation (1915), D.W. Griffith’s epic masterpiece of Confederate mythology. It is shown very rarely, and this is a great opportunity to see the movie that played such a crucial part in the tortured story of race relations in this country.

Dennis G. touched on it at various points in his epic series of posts on “Confederate History Month” in April. Collected links are here.

It will be followed at 3:30 a.m. by Oscar Micheaux’s Within Our Gates (1920). “A white doctor falls in love with a mulatto woman who has returned to Boston to raise money for a Southern school.”

    From IMDB:

Oscar Micheaux, the first African-American to produce a feature-length film (The Homesteader [in 1919]) and a sound feature-length film (The Exile in 1931), is not a major figure in American film just for these milestones but because his oeuvre is a window onto the American psyche as regards race and its deleterious effects on individuals and society.

Kudos to TCM. They are rocking the silver screen this week.

Are the Lions playing tonight? Oh, wait…

They teased us and teased us for 56 minutes and then collapsed in the last 4 minutes. The Detroit Lions have a new advertising slogan – Calling all masochists.

@Steeplejack: As a child it always puzzled me (Pinky, Showboat, etc) why a white person always had to play the mixed race person. When I knew full well a lot of people cast as “black” were of mixed race.

I guess this is why, at the age of twelve, I was able to give the whole thing a pass, and work on ignoring it. Because it made no dam sense.

Probably. I don’t have a dog in this fight (Go Eagles!) (Also, get it? Dog? Eagles fan? Eh? … Too soon?) but the Bengals have been awful this year (a big “Ha Ha!” to T.O.) and the Steelers have looked good.

Well, of course I am all about the Bengals tonight, and JenJen, I predict, will taste the sweet fruits of win over the pretty boy Stillers and their homey refs. GO Bengals!!

    @WereBear:

Actually, in this one the mixed-race woman is played by an African-American, Evelyn Preer. That is part of Micheaux’s genius. He was light-years ahead of just about every other filmmaker on race.

I have not seen Within Our Gates and am looking forward to it. That reminds me, I need to make some room on the DVR. It is still recovering from the Fritz Lang load deposited last night.

I have two players on the Bengals on my fantasy team, so I hope the score is 45-44 if the Stillers do win.

Oh, DIAF. We suck this year, sure, but I’m feeling good about tonight. Or maybe that’s just the booze?

Still at our tailgate and about to head over. See you on teevee, America!

    @JenJen:

Always good not to count the shots. They’re not real drinks, they’re . . . theater. Or something.

I’m pulling for you tonight. The Stillers have looked shaky this year, and I think the Bengals could pull an upset. We shall see.

Rooting for the Bengals tonight. I let my buddy make my picks in this week’s office pool because he told me how awesome he was doing in his pool.

He picked the Bengals over the Steelers. A rousing discussion ensued with me making the same point over and over, “This isn’t last year, dumbass.”

Anyway, I stuck with his picks and he got us tied for first place going in to tonight. My office opponent is actually a Bengals fan who picked against ’em. He says he’ll root for the Bengals and if they lose, he’ll have a $50 consolation prize. I really hate him.

Alas, our hapless Bengals will be national entertainment tonight. Unlike JenJen, I don’t have a good feeling about the, er, quality of that entertainment. But I’m at 0, with no shots, so that could be part of it.
