Self-described “conservative of the century” Richard Viguerie is sending me emails again:
(Manassas, Virginia) Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, has launched a petition drive to House Republican leaders John Boehner and Eric Cantor urging them not to intervene to keep Congresswoman Michele Bachmann from being elected as Chairwoman of the House Republican Caucus.
__
News reports indicate that Boehner and Cantor are trying to keep Bachmann from being elected to the 4th highest ranking position in the House GOP leadership. The petition asks them to keep “hands off” the race. In a letter to conservative activists, Viguerie wrote:
__
“Michele Bachmann and Jeb Hensarling are both small-government, constitutional conservatives. They deserve an equal shot at chairing the House Republican Conference. Unfortunately, Boehner and Cantor are working to derail the Bachmann candidacy by vocally supporting Hensarling…
__
“Bachmann was one of the few House Republicans who wasn’t afraid to take the Tea Party message to the airwaves and nationalize the election in favor of constitutional, small government principles in 2010. Her message connected with voters across America and significantly contributed to the massive 60-plus seat pickup on Election Night.”
__
There is only one response possible, from my position amongst the sneering mass of vitriolical jackals…
__
Oscar Leroy
Hear me out: This is all a plan to make Michelle Bachman more powerful. If right-wing ideologues come out against her, Democrats will go easier on her.
11-dimensional chess, people!
MikeJ
I don’t have a republican congressperson, but I’m gonna find the closest and bug the shit out of them, demanding that they vote for Bachman.
Ash Can
This may be the only time I ever agree with Richard Viguerie. Having Bachmann in a high-profile, responsible position in the House would be awesome.

Reposting this from the previous open thread. I got some great responses, but three more posts appeared pretty quickly after that post, so the thread is not going to stay active. Would appreciate anyone’s input and thoughts. Thanks.
Repost:
Since this is an open thread…does anyone have any experience with Vitamin B12 deficiency? Know anyone who has had it? Were they seen by a doctor and treated? Did it help?
I’ve been reading up on it and I think it could explain some symptoms that someone I know has. This person is a long-term strict vegetarian (almost vegan), so is definitely in a risk category for it.
I’d be interested in hearing if anyone has an experience with it. Thanks.
BGinCHI
I hate to say this, but I’m with Viguerie: Let’s get Bachmann a leadership position in the GOP!
Steve King and that sub-human Louie Gomert too!
Elections have consequences and we might as well get this shit over with.

B12 deficiency:
A physician who is sympathetic to vegans would be most helpful.
Bear in mind that B vitamins come wrapped up in a complex and the body uses them better if they are taken in that way.
Walnuts, by the way, seem to be a pretty good natural source.

@MikeJ: I have a Republican congresscritter, unfortunately, he’s one of the most corrupt bastards in DC (no really, check out Gary Miller’s record some time), so unless there’s a dirty land deal in it for him to profit off of it, I doubt he’s going to do anything other than what the leadership tells him to do.
Linda Featheringill
Of course Boehner and Cantor are going to try to control who serves on what committee. Duh!
To think otherwise is quite naive.

So the self-described conservative of the century is behind the times? Isn’t that ironic.

@Violet: They really need to go to the doctor and get tested for a deficiency. The doctor will probably start them on supplements and if that doesn’t solve it, an injection. Even Medicare will pay for an injection but only if there is a serious deficiency. Just being tired or achy won’t cut it. Other payers may be more liberal.

Bachmann’s out. Don’t look, it’s Politico.

This one seems pretty simple — one of the archdukes of the old guard is trying to get the rubes to believe that he’s a A-Number-One TPer. He’s obviously not naive enough to believe that there would be anything fair or normal about not engaging in political wrangling and just voting on the leadership. It’s about as sincere as if Viguerie proposed that there be no campaigning before Election Day.

I’ve got two very creepy movies I’m pondering watching tonight. On disk is a new one called Splice, that according to NF customer reviews in very weird and disturbing. And on instant there is Alice, a foreign rendition of Alice in Wonderland, that is supposed to be even creepier and maybe the weirdest movie ever made. And I am not a fan of horror flicks in the least, but something about the reviews has piqued my interest. maybe I will watch them, maybe I won’t.

Yeah, so did I. For everyone similarly afflicted, here’s the requested Brain (and Aural) Bleach. It meanders as in an organ intro for a few minutes before evolving into a fuil-blown hardcore drum and guitar jam, but I figure that kind of length and aural variety is necessary for good brain bleach.

@ Stuck: The Czech Alice was actually playing in a bar I went into yesterday. It may or may not be worth watching but watching it without sound was pretty disorienting/disturbing. The 05 Portugese Alice (not based on Alice in Wonderland) by martins (martens?) is one of my favorite movies though.
My best friend from childhood and co-captain from HS basketball lost his five year old son on Sunday. He had been in complete remission for years and had no other symptoms besides a bloody nose and an “icky” feeling when they took him to the hospital on Friday. Parents really shouldn’t outlive their kids. I’m a fucking mess, my buddy is basically on suicide watch and his other son, a three year old, can’t process any of it and thinks his brother is hiding.

Yes. I have the problem. It's genetic. My gut simply lacks the enzymes necessary to extract B-12 from my diet. No amount of healthy eating or consuming vitamin B12 pills could change that fact. And, yes, doing so is highly effective in staving off the neurological and other problems associated with constant and consistent B12 deficiency.

@Ailuridae: My deepest sympathy to you and your friend. I am not a parent but I can empathize. I have been trading emails all day with my friends as we try to figure out how to celebrate my friend’s birthday next weekend. He would have been 36 had he not killed himself several months ago. As hard as it was to lose a friend of almost 20 years completely out of the blue like that, it was nothing compared to what his parents went (and are still going) through.
And since I am sharing, I have the same kidney disease that killed my father and my main goal in life is to make sure that I outlive my mother.

Stop drinking now. If you can. If you are going face to face with major depression, the only thing drunkenness is going to do is exacerbate your bad thoughts and loosen your inhibitions that are (subconsciously) fighting against total despair. Drinking in the face of bad news is understandable if not something to be encouraged. Drinking while depressed is a recipe for something very very bad to happen. Be smart. People care.

That is obviously a masterful 11-dimensional-chess plan to end the tax cuts. Just watch: by signaling that he will give in, Obama will make his opponents overplay their hands, allowing him to see where they stand, thus giving him the chance to nail them right where it hurts.

Do you have a second email that you use to write under the nom of “change”? Because, honestly, if you’re a dem or a liberal or remotely on the left, your online presence is doing more harm than good. You blend in with right-wing astroturf trolls without so much as a second breath. If you’re for real, you’re a classless dickhead, and though I want needless American warfare in this century to come to an end as much as you say you do, you are NOT on my side. You are the intellectual progeny of the Weather Underground, you claim to abhor American foreign policy above all other considerations.
You hate the war, and as such you embrace the tragic consequences of the collateral damages of the waging of that war. And in that embrace, you have come to neglect the sacrifice of all Americans (who have lives of their own, btw) of those who have been ordered to wage such war. You are only too happy to point out the unfortunate evil that is a result of our military engagement overseas, while ignoring that every military engagement results in morally negligent circumstances. At the SAME TIME, You neglect to acknowledge the good that is being done in America’s name throughout the world, and at home with respect to the current administration’s domestic policies and our efforts at improving the world, with the Peace Corps and foreign aid just being two examples that many other nations cannot claim as their own.
For fuck’s sake, I am completely fed up with, and just as fatigued as anyone with single-issue voters. Take your pick, but whether it be on the left with anti-war activists, and people who abandoned Obama over Rahm or single-payer, or most especially on the right where people vote according to their pastor’s interpretation of the Bible or because they’re “pro-life”, I’m simply done with you, because you’re a retarded simpleton that refuses to acknowledge that we live in a four dimensioned reality with a lot of complicating details and regretful nuances.
Wilfred. I’m feeling angry with you, but I’m not going to change your mind tonight, I know that. Go and do some reading, and start with actual experts. Seriously, the best place to start for anyone, right or left, is Carl Sagan’s The Demon-Haunted World. Go learn about reality, skepticism, and a little bit of doubt. Wisdom can’t help but follow. I say that as someone who’s been altered and enlightened by such prose. Seriously. Fury towards you won’t do anything but reinforce your preconceptions, especially when you came here under the pretense of starting a fight. Take a breath, go get some air. I’ve given you the name of an author that helped me learn something. You might not find wisdom there, but we should all aim to learn more, right?

As I see it, it has gone from no compromise on tax-cuts to the wealthy to a temporary extension (for how long? no one knows). Oh! That makes it alright. We’re holding people in secret prisons without trial, bombing allies like Pakisan, and shooting up weddings by accident, but it’s okay because that happens in every war. No biggie.
At least it’s for a good cause: keeping from power the indigenous popular movement that, a decade ago, let our enemies hang out in their country. Let’s face it: the best way to protect ourselves from terrorism is to find every single country on planet Earth that can possibly be host to a terror group, then attacking and occupying it at the cost of hundreds of billions of dollars, and staying until every citizen in that country wants to help us.
I just can’t understand why Muslims are more angry about the blowing up of innocent people by predator drones than they are happy about the wells being dug by the Peace Corps. What’s wrong with them? Sure, we are propping up the world’s most corrupt government in Hamid Karzai’s Afghanistan, but we are helping people paint schools, too. Look at the big picture.
War is just one issue! Just one among many! Don’t take it so seriously!
When I think “Balloon Juice”, I think “skepticism”. The people here steadfastly refuse to swallow ridiculous ideas whole without any critical examination. There is no mutually-reinforced blind faith here, no sir.

It’s less work than making it a blog post on my site, and it gets a larger audience. On top of that, it has the benefit of being something that comes from within. I’m tired of just saying “fuck you”. Transition doesn’t happen overnight, it’s like erosion, it’s a slow withering, and the best aim is to employ your adversary with the tools necessary to have them come to their own realization.
The ones that don’t, well, you’ve always discounted them, and you’ll continue to do the same to those that don’t get it. Once you accept the fact that that kind of change is the only one you will see that will be effective, you stop throwing FU’s and start trying to inhabit their premises, and begin chipping away slowly, whether it be with chisels, water, or mere wind.
