I’m out of this one. I don’t think the sh*tty, excuse me, I mean, gritty little Bruins are playing this week. Don’t have to worry about a humiliating pasting.

Edit: though they have won some games. They really have. Seriously.

Today is the day that every Gator fan and alum (like myself) has dreaded: Steve Spurrier, the Ol’ Ballcoach, is coming back to the Swamp, and he is coming with a real honest to God chance to take the East from the Gators.

  22. 22.

    stuckinred

    November 13, 2010 at 3:03 pm

@Joey Maloney: It goes back to his recruitment by Mississippi State. A friend of an agent (John Bond) claims his old man said it would take $200,000 for him to go to MSU. He didn’t but all kinds of other stuff has surfaced, alleged cheating on tests at Florida, a stolen computer. Somehow the FBI is involved so it’s juicy.

  23. 23.

    MattR

    November 13, 2010 at 3:04 pm

@Joey Maloney: The short answer is: possibly. The long answer is that a former Miss St player (who was associated with an agent for NFL players) is saying that Cam Newton’s father approached him and said it would take $100K+ for Cam to go to Miss St. That was after he initially denied it when it was initially reported. There are other allegations that Newton plagiarized a couple of papers while he was at Florida. In both cases, there is no real proof of wrongdoing and there is nothing to indicate that Auburn has done anything wrong (though I think it is safe to assume that if Cam’s dad was trying to shakedown Miss St he was also trying with the other schools recruiting his son. I can’t imagine he wouldn’t find at least one school that would pay him, so that leaves the conclusion that Auburn paid him – again assuming that the allegations about Miss St are true)

    @Joey Maloney:

There are some admittedly shady characters who are alleging Newton’s father solicited money from Mississippi St. coaches. I find it a little odd that your parents can completely fuck up your eligibility like that. I think they should have to prove you at least knew about it.

I don’t know if Newton’s going to play today. Shit, if I were Auburn I’d probably roll the dice and let him play.

Big 10 tiebreakers, how do they work? Does anyone control their destiny?

  34. 34.

    stuckinred

    November 13, 2010 at 3:31 pm

@Mark S.: If it is destiny it can’t be controlled, but you weren’t the first one to say it . Big Ten tie breaker for what? The BCS takes who they want. Three years ago Illinois beat Ohio State but, since OSU had a better overall record they got the BCS bid and the Illini went to the Rose Bowl. (also a BSC game)

  36. 36.

    MattR

    November 13, 2010 at 3:38 pm

@stuckinred:There are some quirks to deal with the scenario if all tied teams have not played each other, but basically, the tiebreakers for the Big Ten are head to head, then overall record, then BCS ranking.

    November 13, 2010 at 3:38 pm

    Michigan State beat Wisconsin

Ohio State does not play Michigan State

The Big 10 tiebreaker for the Rose Bowl is who ever went last, the other team goes. The conference has no say about the BCS.

    Bowl selection procedures

Although the pick order usually corresponds to the conference standings, the bowls are not required to make their choices strictly according to the won-lost records; many factors influence bowl selections, especially the turnout of the fans for past bowl games. Picks are made after BCS selections; the bowl with the #2 pick will have the first pick of the remaining teams in the conference.

The Capital One, Outback, and Gator Bowls can select any eligible team except a team that has two fewer wins or two more losses than another eligible team. The Insight, Dallas Classic, Texas and Motor City Bowls have no such restrictions, However, the bowls cannot select a 6-6 team if a 7-5 or better team is not selected by a Big Ten-affiliated bowl.[25][26]

  41. 41.

    MattR

    November 13, 2010 at 3:41 pm

@stuckinred: This is why I was looking at it. If Iowa beats OSU then the three tied teams are all 1-1 against each other. So it goes to overall record which eliminates Iowa who has two losses. Then they go back to head to head and MSU gets in. If OSU beats Iowa you have the situation you describe. Since all three teams did not play each other they go to overall record, but all three teams will be 11-1. So they go to BCS rankings which is currently Wisconsin (7), OSU (9), MSU (11)

  44. 44.

    MattR

    November 13, 2010 at 3:46 pm

@stuckinred: The BCS has to take the Big Ten champion. The Big Ten gets to decide how that champion is named and they use those tiebreakers to do so. (Which BCS bowl they end up in is a different story)

EDIT: I have no idea why FYWP won’t let me link to the page on the Big Ten website that I am using, but it is titled “Method to Determine Big Ten Conference Automatic Representative to Bowl Championship Series” If anyone is interested, google that phrase and it is the top result.

@Corner Stone: Because short of just taking a knee on every possession in the second half, I don’t think they could have not scored. IU put forth the worst defensive performance I’ve ever seen from a Division I school, and I grew up watching Northwestern in the era when they set the NCAA record for consecutive losses. On their last possession, UW was using their 3rd string QB–a walk-on transfer from Central Florida–and the Hoosier D basically just let him walk into the end zone.
