Really interesting piece by Rick Moody about a former student of his who sells shoes at an upscale store. I know–doesn’t seem like it should be interesting, but it is. http://therumpus.net/2010/11/a-shoe-seller-speaks/

Just thought i’d mention – in case no-one’s yet done so – that our very own EDK has a series of massively self-regarding and pompous posts over at his other place. I gave up at the mention of “Tolkien’s Anarcho Monarchism” in the latest one, although the earlier post referencing Oakshotte and Sully approvingly did make me laugh. I’m too tired but it really needs a good parody done…

Very nice song there by Ritter! I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never heard of him.

Canadian Public Broadcasting FTW!

Please help me. The hubster has egregiously bad musical taste and his new kick is watching different youtubes of The Archies singing Sugar, Sugar. I kid you not — he is not being ironic. How can I survive this?

Also, I’m still trying to figure out how Aston Villa didn’t get a win this morning. Go up 2-0 in the second half and then don’t hold on? Come on, guys.

@Svensker:
I don’t know. That sounds worse than my present obsession with Shirley Temple. If my husband weren’t averse to commenting on the internet, I’d ask him to help you.

Pat Caddell can lick my taint. What an incredible asshole.
That is all.

@Brian S (formerly Incertus): Thanks for that, Brian. You were right.

Perhaps a bit of spousal swapping is in order? You’re welcome to mine!

Sorry, no thanks!

Josh Ritter is terrific live. By himself with just a guitar is great but you should see him with his full band they all look so happy to be rocking out on stage.

@Superluminar:
I don’t read his utter tripe here, why would I want to go there and subject myself to it?

So for fans of anime and vocaloids,
who were looking for final proof,
that Japan is teh awesomest technoculture on Earth.
Both clips are best at full screen in High Definition:
Miku & Luka
Also:
Rin & Len
I’ve been watching the clips,
and I’m thinking now that it’s just rear projection onto a some kind of semi-translucent screen.
The “glassy” front-screen, seems to be approximately cinemascope ratio,
which you can easily cover using a HDTV projector with an anamorphic lens.

And I could add.
As is partly explained by the person who posted the clips on YouTube.
He seems to have seen an actual concert.
This is just to correct my earlier comment on a previous thread that it may be the Peppers Ghost illusion.
It’s vaguely related, in that it uses a transparent surface to create the illusion of being located in 3D space.

Settling in for a day of college football after watching the local high school team dominate their playoff opponent last night. Will definitely be digging out the long johns for the game next Friday.
Go Gamecocks!!

I caught that Q interview with Ritter when it was broadcast. Jian’s show is an incredibly awesome collection of great guests, so it’s really worth streaming live (from various time zones) from the CBC site or catching past shows from the show site here.
But what that video collection on the Q site doesn’t include is a live version of The Curse that actually moved me to tears. I rarely cry over music, so that’s a real achievement. You can catch the official video here. But really pay attention to the lyrics, especially the way things come around in the last verse.

Very nice, indeed. While sampling some tech video podcasts, I ran across a review of an iPad app called Aweditorium, which provides an amazing and fun way to check out new artists. The main screen is a huge grid of artist photos. You tap any one and it opens on a larger screen and a song from the artist, with buttons to also opens a smaller window with a YouTube interview or live performance clip, along with other goodies.
The app is free. I don’t know if it is available for other platforms.

@Svensker:
Earplugs. Even better, expensive noise-canceling headphones that he has to pay for.
ETA: Though I would love to see your problem show up in that “Can This Marriage Be Saved?” column in Redbook (or whichever stupid women’s magazine runs it).
