Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Let’s finish the job.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

If NBC pre-empts Chuck again for another Bush interview, Keith Olbermann will be the least of NBC’s problems.

I always like to hear George opine about history, and that no one will know how it’s judged cause we’ll all be dead. That just blows my mind every time.

Sarah Palin has officially changed the modern lexicon, one tweet at a time. While one might expect the New Oxford American Dictionary to refudiate the former Alaska governor’s favorite verb, today they embraced it, announcing “refudiate” as the official 2010 word of the year.

RIP America – Kilt by Twitter.

Well, Custer got exactly what he deserved for his arrogance, ignorance, and blunt stupidity. His fellow soldiers he dragged into an untenable, easily ambushed position, perhaps not so much. Custer was planning to execute a massacre of the Indians who ambushed him – surprise, surprise, surprise that he blundered his way into them massacring him before he could do the same to them, women and children included.

Bakers, I need help. I’ve been making a bread with filling (melted butter, chopped onions, spices, poppy seeds). The recipe calls for the filling to be sealed in lengthwise pieces of dough that are then braided, but I’ve been rolling it up like a jelly roll. The problem with either method is a mildly soggy center. I bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes until the outside is a deep golden brown and don’t dare push it much longer. What do you think? Smaller loafs? Longer, slower baking time?

Via the GOS and Think Progress: Arizonans go after another terror mosque with its terror dome, yet it’s actually a Christian church being built by volunteers.

PHOENIX — People behind a new church in Phoenix are trying to stay ahead of any potential controversy or hate that accompanied the announcement of a proposed mosque near Ground Zero in New York City.
    __
A new dome-like structure near 19th Avenue along Interstate 10 in Phoenix is the Light of the World church, a nondenominational Christian church hoping to modernize traditional worship services, a church spokesman said
    __
Since the distinctive dome shape went up, church leaders said they have received phone calls from concerned neighbors who’ve mistaken the building for an Islamic mosque.
    __
On Wednesday, church officials hung a sign reminding people they’re Christian congregation. “We’re trying to let people know that we’re Christian and our churches are modern,” said Uzieo Martinez.

“Please Don’t Freak Out Like We’re Muslims, People!”

The tops of many storage tanks are dome-shaped, therefore they are all terror mosques.

My sympathies, Zuzu’s Petals. I had two aged cats go within 6 months of one another; it’s tough.

On the teeth-brushing thing: some cats do need teeth-cleaning. The vet did it once a year for one of my roommate’s cats (15 years old) who had an excessive build-up of plaque or something. I’m not sure if you can do it yourself very easily. It’s worth specifically asking the vet to look at that if you have an older cat.

I have downloaded only a few so far for my Droid Incredible.

CardioTrainer is a pretty amazing app for tracking your route, time and distance for walking, running, biking, etc. You can save your workouts to a Web site.

The app gStrings is a really cool one for tuning your guitar. You can have it play a tone that you tune to, but the awesome part is that it has a mode where it shows you a meter with a needle, listens to your note and shows you graphically whether you’re sharp or flat. Very cool.

MLB News is dormant right now, but it gave me up-to-the-minute scores and standings during the baseball season.

RepliGo Reader helped me out when I needed to carry around a huge PDF file and read it on the go.

Okay, this is something you youngsters can help me out with (since I’m one of those white boomers you all think are the bane of the Democratic Party, all of whom you want to die off). Did none of your English teachers teach you that most adjectives’ comparative and superlative forms are made by adding -er and
-est respectively? The comparative form of clever is “cleverer”, not “more clever”. Rather ironic that you’re talking about a neologism, and you don’t know this.

Or is this one of these ancient rules of grammar that we’ve decided to let slide to make it easier for the Twitter age?

@Zuzu’s Petals: My sympathies. Of mine, Monster has perfect teeth after sixteen years with no brushing; Ringling won’t let me brush her teeth, and had some extractions recently; Dirk will let me approach him, but I spend the whole time fighting his tongue as he tries to eat the seafood flavored toothpaste. He goes in for a cleaning and extraction on Thursday.

Eddie had major oral surgery, including six extractions, back in May. So, he may have cancer, but his teeth are taken care of. For those who have followed this saga, he’s still doing very well. Thanks to the steroids I’m giving him, he’s eating everything in sight and I had to start limiting how much he can have. The two front toes he has left are so swollen that his claws are coming out at a 45 degree angle, and he can’t retract them. That bothers him a lot. He keeps tugging on them with his teeth, and digging them into the bedsheets and pulling. I haven’t had the heart to tell him that it’s never going to work. Other than that, he’s doing just fine. I’m considering the possibility that, in keeping with his whole medical history, he might not be very good at the dying part of “dying of cancer.”

I’m considering the possibility that, in keeping with his whole medical history, he might not be very good at the dying part of “dying of cancer.”

After Boris was poisoned by the fucking Chinese rice gluten in Natural Balance’s food, we seriously thought we were going to have to put him to sleep within a day or two of diagnosis. But we just had to do a couple of simple procedures (like giving him subcutaneous fluid at home every day) and he bounced back enough that one of the vets said, “How is your cat with the magical regenerating kidneys?”

We got an extra three months with him that we didn’t expect and though it was frustrating at times to have a seriously ill cat, it was worth it.

(I do feel guilty, though, because we think what happened is that he caught a virus from my brother’s cat who we were babysitting and his body couldn’t fight it off. Between that and the stress of having a strange cat in the house, he just faded away.)

Nice try, but nope. English admits of more felicity of rhythm than that.

    She is clever.
    She is patient.
    She is graceful.

We do not say that she is patienter, or that she is gracefuller. Rather, we say that she is more patient, more graceful.

@Zuzu’s Petals: Prednisolone (which is the spelling on the bottles, though the L is partially swallowed when saying it) is what Eddie’s on. It slows down the spread of a lot of cancers, though, since they have never seen a case of feline cutaneous lymphoma where I go, they’re just guessing that it will help him. There are a couple of things to be aware of:

    1) It dramatically increases their appetite. For cancer patients, this is probably a good thing. You have to be careful, though, because they can gain weight fast, and;

    2) One of its potential side effects is that it can lead to diabetes. For most cancer patients, you’ll be pretty happy if you have to put them to sleep from diabetes, since it means that they lived long enough to get it. So, you should monitor her weight;

    3) It lowers their immune system. Eddie had a bladder infection two weeks ago that really panicked me, thinking it was kidney stones. Be prepared to administer antibiotics.
