Commentor Karen posted this morning:
I have a cat that I’ll have to give back to the shelter if I can’t get someone to adopt her. This is Sasha.

__
I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. Sometimes I can barely take care of myself, let alone two cats.
__
My spouse (from who I was separated) helped me with housework and taking care of the cats and I got Sasha for him. Due to circumstances beyond control, he is out of state for good and I’m left here drowning with the two cats (never mind all the housework) and I have no car.
__
Sasha and the older kitty Contessa fight constantly and I think because of this, Sasha sometimes leaves little presents outside the litter box. She’s probably terrorized because Contessa is a terror…

Seriously, there are so many animal lovers on BJ, I’m in MD, does anyone want to adopt her? I’ll include the food and all her favorite toys. I’ll even include a kitty condo.
__
Please?
Anybody got any advice, experience with MD rescue groups, contacts at home-assistance organizations, whatever?
If you prefer to keep things “private” (off the board), email me at [email protected] … or click the link in the upper-right-hand column… and I’ll pass your message along to Karen directly.

Googling “no kill shelters” close to where she lives might be a good first step.

Sasha’s beautiful.
Good luck. I think you’ll find her a good home, and maybe with a Balloon Juicer.

Karen, I wish you only the best. This is a tough time for you, but you sound strong and you’re going about these tough decisions in a sensible way instead of full-blown panic.
Sasha is a beautiful cat. I’m sure someone (the *perfect* one) will show up. Alas, I’m not that person, but I know s/he is out there.

You should also hit Petfinder and either hook up with a rescue group from there or post your own ad. Sasha is very cute, but I’m 3,000 miles away. :-(

I’m glad this was posted again. I had read it earlier on this mornings open thread/animal rescue blog. That cat is adorable and I’m sure that a loving home can be found for Sasha. Karen, good luck to both you and Sasha.

Can you call senior centers or reach other outlets to older people? They would be thrilled to get a cat who is already trained and altered and comes with a condo.
Seniors don’t want a kitten. They need somebody with known quantities, with work already done.
Anyone who asks, it’s because the cat doesn’t get along with the other cat. Everyone understands that. And you used to cope and you can’t anymore; anyone should understand that.
Also, call shelters and see what leads they might have. Often, shelters keep “the book” of people who don’t want a shelter animal; they feel more comfortable adopting from a private home.
Speaking of which, you can, through a shelter, put her on Petfinder yourself, with all the info; ask them about a private listing.

Also, check with as many vets as you can; they will put up a pic and the info.
If you can get someone to put together a resume for the cat, this will help a lot.
Here’s how to write a resume for a cat who needs a home.
If need be, reach me through my blog, and I’ll do it for you.
But you would help if you got someone to take a better pic. She’s gorgeous; she needs to show that. AND a pic of the bonus condo, so she had a scratching post and everything; that’s a nice sweetener.

I happen to do cat rescue and I live in MD. Already sent you an e-mail. It’s very hard to place any cat right now, but I’ll do everything I can!
Karen
Thank you so much you all! Especially, thank you Annie Laurie! I knew this was the right place! You’ve given me suggestions that honestly, I never would have thought of. I’m going to start investigating tomorrow.
Thank you all again! I’ll take better pics, including of the kitty condo!
Karen
@FoxinSocks:
Thank you so much!

If you find a home for your beautiful cat, don’t give her away for free. Always charge something, so that you know the new owner is willing to be responsible. Make sure they’ll take her yearly to a vet for boosters, and that they can afford food and vet care. Ask your local animal rescue groups for information on what questions to ask a prospective new owner. It’s good to be careful.
With best wishes,
Marina

Perhaps since this went so well, I should ask for advice about the six ferals I have in my yard now and how to trap them and how I can possibly find homes for the little ones I try to tame.
I’ve got nine cats waiting in the driveway for me every evening I come home and cat poop everywhere.
I caught one by hand yesterday evening and it got out of the crate I put it in. It got through the wall and back outside.
They seem to like me when I have food, but not otherwise. I feel over-run.
Any help would be appreciated.
You Don't Say
I wish I could take Sasha. She looks just like my Duncan who passed away in February, but I’m on the other side of the country. Sounds like you’re on the right track. Best of luck, Karen.

@junebug: You might want to try Alley Cat Allies. They’re all about ferals.

@Karen: DC area MD, or somewhere else? I’m full up with two cats in a small apartment, but I know a couple good rescue groups.

@CatStaff:
Yeah, I built a cat house using their plan. Only problem is the old tom cat feral took it over — no others allowed.
At least since I typed that last comment, I have caught one of the little ferals. Just two more to go! And a yet again pregnant mom cat and two males (I think).
Thanks!

What State are we talking here? I have room for another good cat but I’m not flying to New York from California to get one.
