Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

I really should read my own blog.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Consistently wrong since 2002

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

You can’t love your country only when you win.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Everybody saw this coming.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Republicans in disarray!

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Tom Who? What? DeLay? Never Heard of Him…

This is priceless:

I’m wondering how long it will take for the wingnut blogs to notice DeLay is going to the big house.

And if you are wondering why none of them have commented yet, it is because they have not figured out a way to blame this on Obama or the Democrats nor have they come up with someone to point their fingers to in the Democratic party and say “He’s worse!” As soon as one of the upper tier wingnuts gives the marching order and figures out how to blame this on Democrats, they’ll start their little echo chamber.

I like to see who it is that first trots out the days marching orders. I expect to hear lots about Rangle too. You know that will be a great big twinkie they will want to dangle out there.

Going from Dancing the the stars to Dancing behind bars. I wonder if he will be the Hammer in prison? I wonder if he will even talk about hammering while in prison?

Actually, Fox News went with this on their website:

DeLay’s Misfortunes Opened Path for Boehner
    __
Tom DeLay is the reason John Boehner is in line to become Speaker of the House in January.
    __
For those of you lost in a news vacuum, or a tryptophan and pumpkin pie-induced food coma this Thanksgiving, a Texas jury convicted former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) late Wednesday of funneling corporate campaign funds to local political candidates in Texas. The felony conviction could send DeLay to prison anywhere from five years to life, although the former Leader could receive probation.
    __
DeLay is scheduled for sentencing just before Christmas. But he’s planning to appeal.
    __
But for Tom DeLay, there would be no John Boehner. At least in the context that places Boehner on the precipice of the House Speakership in just a few weeks.
    __
I often argue that political leadership positions are determined by “particle politics.” This is when battles and outcomes are determined at the sub-atomic level as political protons and neutrons crash into one another.
    __
The rise of John Boehner and the fall of Tom DeLay serve as the very essence of political quantum theory when it comes to determining the fates of Congressional figures.

It’s just a misfortune that wrecked DeLay. If he repented, he would be born again which makes him twice better than anyone else. He should just say that he is born again and it will be all better, coz repenting means he committed a sin which will confuse the “real amuricans”.

The Salon Hack 30, Bristol going down in defeat with the same humility and grace as her mother, the FRC goes onto the SPLC hate group list, and now Delay is a convicted felon who may do some time and who will no longer be able to vote. I haven’t laughed and rejoiced so much in…well, I simply can’t think of when that last happened.

I was wondering about the name of the prosecutor. This trial was probably make-or-break for his career. Bear in mind that he was win a conviction [which he did] and still lose his career. It might be interesting to see what happens with him.

LOL, precisely, they are a temporarily a little flummoxed, I suspect, with the potential Everest size mountain of hypocrisy it would be to go against the prevailing teatard meme of corrupt and evil government. But they will eventually figure out a way, at least in their lizard heads, on how to thread that needle. I suspect they are studying all the players countertops to gather what support they can for another round of liberal skullduggery behind Mr. Delay’s bad luck.

And Happy Turkey day to all juicers. This little gift from the magi on the Hamma goin; to the Slamma, made my holiday.

    @junebug:

Rosemary Lehmberg was Ronnie Earle’s top assistant and won election to replace him when he retired largely onb expectations she would vigorously pursue the Delay case.
She tied her opponent to lobbyists, largely because the main opponent was the daughter of a former State Senator who drew on her dad’s Austin lobby connections for her campaign money. ( Her Dad was also Chancellor of Texas Tech and responsible for hiring Bobby Knight, but this was never used as an issue. Austin is still a football town.)

Honestly, I don’t think it goes that far. It’s just the way they don’t think. I have a friend who sends me every “OMG the sky is falling a virus is coming to eat your computer!” chain email she gets, and every time I send her a link debunking the email to which she replies, “oh, thanks, I was worried!” Then the next panic email comes and she does it again — it never occurs to her, gee, maybe my friend has an idea, and I could google this before I panic. Nope, panic and hit forward is her motto.

Same with these guys. They just reflexively see and believe what they see and believe, no point thinking about it or checking. What they’ve been told is true in their unreflective little heads. Perhaps Karl Rove and his ilk think about the strategy. These sad proles just swallow the bait and praise their gracious overlords as they get popped into the frying pan. Sizzle sizzle!

You forgot 4) Citizens United invalidates the Texas statute that prohibited corporate campaign contributions, and you can’t punish DeLay for serving as a conduit for legal campaign contributions. I’d bet $20 that that argument shows up on appeal, and those lunatics on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals just might buy it.

But is he going to prison? Yesterday in the NYTimes:

He faces between 5 and 99 years in prison, though the judge may choose probation.

And if he can choose probation, can’t he sentence Delay to 5 years and suspend 3, or 4, or all of it?

I won’t be satisfied until Delay is in uniform, behind bars, and fighting over which bunk he gets — top or bottom. Conviction without actual prison time just won’t do.

If the prosecution and judge are really out for justice, Delay will not get probation unless he sings like a canary. I am sure Delay does not want to go to prison at all, let alone for a long time. The people handling this must know that they have the political corruption equivalent of Sammy “The Bull” Gravano.

Consider how much clearer our understanding of American politics and our recent history would be if we knew only half of what Delay knows.
