Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

No one could have predicted…

Democrats have delivered the Square Deal, the New Deal, the Fair Deal, and now… the Big Joe Biden Deal.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Fani Willis claps back at Trump chihuahua, Jim Jordan.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

I was promised a recession.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

… but there’s a new niche waiting for Balloon Juice’s most popular pin-up…

__

Feline media sensation Prince Chunk dies in NJ
__
BLACKWOOD, N.J. – An enormously fat cat named Prince Chunk who became famous when he was found wandering in New Jersey after his owner lost her home to foreclosure has died.
__
Prince Chunk’s adoptive owner, Vince Damiani of Blackwood, said the white tabby died in his sleep Sunday. He was about 10 years old. Damiani said a veterinarian had diagnosed the cat with heart disease.
__
Prince Chunk skyrocketed to fame in August 2008 after the Camden County Animal Shelter, which took him in, reported that he weighed 44 pounds, just shy of a world record.
__
Damiani believes that estimate may have been somewhat exaggerated. He said Prince Chunk weighed 22 pounds when he brought the cat home from the shelter…

“People exaggerate, he’s just big-boned.” Yeah, we’ve heard that one before.

… The pet’s plight inspired the Damianis to establish the Prince Chunk Foundation, a nonprofit that helps financially distressed pet owners keep their animals. The foundation operates in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and California.
__
Its mission is to prevent animal homelessness by providing temporary assistance to dog and cat owners, including free emergency vet care and pet food, Damiani said.

I’m still nursing this stupid damned sinus infection THAT WILL NEVER GO AWAY, so I’m probably just going to be playing Warcrack. I really like the hunter changes, and am actually playing my hunter, the first toon I ever made and my main during vanilla, and who then sat for two expansions. For some reason, I really like the new changes to the hunter play style, and have been enjoying levelling him.

What are you up to?

Hypocrites!

by Kay|  November 27, 201012:31 pm| 164 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Election 2010, Election 2012, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell

I’m not surprised by this:

Most Americans think incoming Congressmen who campaigned against the health care bill should put their money where their mouth is and decline government provided health care now that they’re in office. Only 33% think they should accept the health care they get for being a member of Congress while 53% think they should decline it and 15% have no opinion.

But Republicans and independents- who put these folks in office in the first place- strongly think they should refuse their government provided health care. GOP voters hold that sentiment by a 58/28 margin and indys do 56/27.

Hypocrisy arguments really resonate with conservative voters. I’m not crazy about relying on HYPOCRISY, I think that approach can easily enter the realm of the deeply stupid and irrelevant (Al Gore took an airplane to a conference, so take that, liberal!) but conservatives are madly in love with this approach.

I have only to look at their perennial favorite-Obama sends his children to private schools!- to see that, and this issue is beautiful, because liberals can simply demand that conservatives purchase health insurance on the current private market. That’s the conservative policy position, so the public versus private schools comparison doesn’t hold up.

Obama believes there should be both public and private schools. He’s not advocating outlawing private schools, and he doesn’t denigrate public schools. Conservatives, on the other hand, ran on overturning the Affordable Care Act, and demonize any public program or federal scheme as a path to tyranny.

Conservatives are more vulnerable to hypocrisy charges, because their positions are so deeply dogmatic and rule-bound. The “free market” solution is ALWAYS better, no matter the facts or circumstances. Liberals are okay with Social Security alongside a private retirement account, while conservatives are dogma-bound to trash Social Security-it’s a PONZI SCHEME, after all, and who in their right mind defends a Ponzi scheme?

They fed their rabid supporters a steady diet of raw meat, and I suspect they’ll have trouble introducing nuance or facts into any discussion of, well, anything, at this point.

Too, in the 6 or so years I’ve sporadically attended political events for Sherrod Brown, this was always a huge applause line, even with a liberal audience:

Brown has refused to participate in the government’s array of health insurance plans for 17 years, saying they are more generous than the coverage choices that many other Americans get. Why should Congress get such sweet coverage? he asks

Brown must recognize that it’s effective, because he used it again, with the public option, in 2009:

Whenever Democrats talk about their proposed federally backed insurance plan, or public option, in the ongoing health-care debate, critics pipe up. If you think this public option is so great, they say, why don’t you demand that all members of Congress go on it, too? Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown says that’s a fine idea. And this morning, he forced his way onto a Republican amendment saying as much, becoming a co-sponsor of a Republican protest measure that would require Congress to go on the public option if it passes.

Democrats should pursue this, if only because it’s a favored tactic of conservative leaders. It’d be fun to throw it back at them.

It’s foam finger time! We’re #1:

Even for the humble among us who try to avoid jingoistic outbursts, some national achievements are so grand that they merit a moment of pride and celebration:

US presence in Afghanistan as long as Soviet slog

The Soviet Union couldn’t win in Afghanistan, and now the United States is about to have something in common with that futile campaign: nine years, 50 days.

On Friday, the U.S.-led coalition will have been fighting in this South Asian country for as long as the Soviets did in their humbling attempt to build up a socialist state.

It seems clear that a similar — or even grander — prize awaits us as the one with which the Soviets were rewarded. I hope nobody thinks that just because we can’t identify who the Taliban leaders are after almost a decade over there that this somehow calls into doubt our ability to magically re-make that nation. Even if it did, it’s vital that we stop the threat of Terrorism, and nothing helps to do that like spending a full decade — and counting — invading, occupying, and bombing Muslim countries.

Suck on that, Soviets! USA! USA! USA!

The Open Secret

by John Cole|  November 27, 201011:47 am| 55 Comments

This post is in: Free Markets Solve Everything, Glibertarianism, Assholes

In a NY Times piece on a bankster who got a brain tumor and then used his last few months alive to write a book telling people how to defend themselves and their money from people like him, this quote stood out:

Mr. Murray grew up in Baltimore, about the farthest thing from a crusader that you could imagine. “I was the kid you didn’t want your daughter to date,” he said. “I stole baseball cards and cheated on Spanish tests and made fun of the fat kid in the corner with glasses.”

He got a lot of second chances thanks to an affluent background and basketball prowess. He eventually landed at Goldman Sachs, long before many people looked askance at anyone who worked there.

“Our word was our bond, and good ethics was good business,” he said of his Wall Street career. “That got replaced by liar loans and ‘I hope I’m gone by the time this thing blows up.’ ”

It is still crazy to me that this is such an open secret, yet no one does anything about it. They make deals they know are going to blow up, but don’t care because they get paid now, and someone else will have to deal with it later on. That is the financial crisis in a nutshell. Yet try to deal with Wall Street and financial compensation, and the wingnuts and teahadists have a fit about the free market and socialism, all unaware that they are being fisted by the invisible hand.

In a somewhat related vein, am I the only one who gets infuriated every time I try to buy an appliance or electronic device, and they offer to sell me a two year warranty? This just makes me livid every damned time it happens. My response is always the same- “No warranty, but how about we do this? I’ll put this product back on the shelf, and you point me to one that you think will actually last a couple years without breaking, since you and your store obviously have no confidence in this POS.”

Easiest Bust In History

Thank goodness this menace to the nation is taken care of:

A U.S. Border Patrol spokesman says country singer Willie Nelson was charged with marijuana possession after 6 ounces was found aboard his tour bus in Texas.

Patrol spokesman Bill Brooks says the bus pulled into the Sierra Blanca, Texas, checkpoint about 9 a.m. Friday. Brooks says an officer smelled pot when a door was opened and a search turned up marijuana.

Brooks says the Hudspeth County sheriff was contacted and Nelson was among three people arrested.

Next thing you know, they’ll target Tommy Chong. Oh, nevermind.
