Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

The revolution will be supervised.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

We still have time to mess this up!

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The words do not have to be perfect.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Accountability, motherfuckers.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

I am being forced to attend an Israel Bonds dinner with Daniel Pipes. Otherwise I would be cheering for UConn. A big-time bowl for them would be really cool after all they have been through.

(I think it was kept from me that Daniel Pipes would be at this thing because this shul has had dinners for the sake of having them in the past)

I got home about 5:15 from a tough day at the store–the first real ZOMG!-Christmas-frenzy day I have seen, much bigger than Black Friday–and am luxuriating in the prospect of an empty evening and a leisurely, open morning tomorrow. Ah . . . the start to my weekend. Just opened a bottle of champagne to be nursed through the evening and am half-assedly trying to decide between Oklahoma-Nebraska or Sherlock Holmes on HBO at 8:00. Missed that in the theaters.

On a whim I picked up the Big Lebowski Kit on the way out of the store today. Bowling shirt patch (“The Dude”), refrigerator magnet (“The Dude Abides”), coffee mug (“I’m staying, finishing my coffee”–Walter), plastic toe with green nail polish (“You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me”), mouse pad with the design of the Dude’s rug on it (“It really tied the room together”), informative booklet. A bargain at $16.95, even better with employee discount.

The simple pleasures. Life is good.

Last night I saw Inside Job, the documentary about the financial meltdown, but that’s a tale for another thread.

My dogs have turned my once-decently lawned backyard into a dustbowl. German shepherd pups really do have some sharp claws, and throw a 100lb Golden Retriever into the mix, each running at full bore in circles after each other, and the grass really didn’t stand a chance.

Shit keeps going way wrong at work on Saturdays when I’m the only one in the building. last week only a broken water line on a mission critical coffee machine. Fixed that.
This week a chlorine pump doing its best to drain the 600,000 gallon pool all by itself. Luckily that’s not my category of machinery. I’m just an Operator, not maintenance. I get to look on while all hell breaks loose.

Gave my wife her Christmas present early. I bought the parts to upgrade her computer last week, and was keeping them in the attic. Was going to put the CPU in her Christmas stocking, and when she pulled it out and looked at me like WTF? I’d get the rest of the parts and do the upgrade and ‘bing, bang, boom,’ have a happy wife.
She’s not a big computer geek by any stretch, but she’s been dropping hints about wanting a newer computer for a couple of months. Saying things like “Goddamn, but this computer is slow,” and “Fucking ancient piece of shit makes me want to fucking stab someone.”
Normally, I can count on one hand the number of swear words she uses in a year, and those are always during our rare fights, so I got the point and visited newegg.
Well, today she was up in the attic, doing a better job of hiding whatever she got for me, when she found the newegg box and got curious.

I am still working on it, as you can see by the failure to form a decent looking loaf. My research (typing into Google search: “my bread falls flat when proofing”) leads me to believe that I need to knead the dough longer so that the gluten develops a bit more.

Anyway, I have a recipe, or rather, I have an ingredient list. The proper method escapes me though I strive to perfect my skills.

Here’s an idea from David Foster Wallace to raise government revenue: sell the naming rights to years instead of assigning non revenue producing sequential numbers.
    Examples:

CHRONOLOGY OF ORGANIZATION OF NORTH AMERICAN NATIONS’ REVENUE ENHANCING SUBSIDIZED TIME™, BY YEAR
    Year of the Whopper
Year of the Tucks Medicated Pad
Year of the Trial-Size Dove Bar
    Year of the Perdue Wonderchicken
Year of the Whisper-Quiet Maytag Dishmaster
Year of the Yushityu 2007 Mimetic-Resolution-Cartridge-View-Motherboard-Easy-To-Install-Upgrade For Infernatron/InterLace TP Systems For Home, Office Or Mobile (sic)
Year of Dairy Products from the American Heartland
Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment
    Year of Glad

Today was my kind of day. It snowed gently all day, very pretty and only sticking to the grass, not the pavement. We got about two inches and that’s it. I sat up in my studio, music playing, working on my latest hooked rug commission. No hassles.

I got a lot done, but I have a lot left and it’s a Christmas gift. Hopefully I can get another day like this tomorrow.

@stuckinred: My beloved Sooners are trying to lose this game. But to your point, I was at OU when Marcus was there. And the best story I’ve ever read about the entire fiasco was a book called ” The Courtship of Marcus Dupree”, by Willie Morris. (Unless it was the Courting). It had me, uber, generations- long OU alumna, wishing Marcus had gone to Texas instead. But after watching the ESPN special, I realized Dupree was just as fucked at OU as he would have been at Texas or MsState. And none of it was really his fault, he was a young man, thrust into a limlight he was totally unprepared for and all the adults in his life were using him in different ways for different things. But not one adult in his life stood up for what was best for Marcus. The best guy Marcus ran in to during that time was Lucius Selman, or maybe Leroy,( I get my Selman brothers confused.) But seriously, if you want to read a most excellent account of someone who was following the story at the time, read the Willie Morris book, he was there interviewing Marcus and his family, all the OU coaches, the Miss State coaches and the Texas guys. And he starts it with the murders of Schwerner and Chaney and Lowe in Philadelphia, Ms. And brings in Reagan’s State’s Rights kick off to his Presidential run. Totally a fascinating 500+ page book. And I can heartily suggest anything by Willie Morris, he is an amazing author, whether fiction or true story. He’s my favorite southern author.

And my Sooners are losing 17-0. YIKES.

    The pecans:

    12 oz whole halves
    3 Tbs. butter
    2 tsps. red pepper
    1 tsp. salt.
    1 Tbs. sugar.

Thanks–Gaby is pretty adorable. I wish I knew which breeds mixed it up and came up with her. According to her DNA test, she’s part Husky. Yes, she loves snow and cold and has a wacky little woo-woo yodel, but she also has to be part terrier, and I wish I could find out which one.

She could be a double for that dog in the Travelers Insurance commercial (the one with the Trouble song and the anguish over a bone). I tried to find what type of dog he was, and it turned out he was a shelter mutt. So much for that. I may never know for sure.

@stuckinred: Did your test use cheek cells or a blood sample? The one I used required a blood sample. It was more expensive but is supposedly more reliable. However, they do all post disclaimers up the wazoo.

FWIW, the vet who spayed Gaby guessed she was part Husky. Apparently Huskies are known for whining and howling more and louder than other breeds when coming out of anesthesia–as Gaby was coming around, she howled so loudly they could hear her all over the clinic. Pretty good for a dog who was sick and about 15 pounds underweight. The vet had to hold her mouth closed.

The testing company mailed the vet a copy of the DNA results. She said that when she read them, she just sat there and giggled.

@Maody: Turbinado would be my choice too just because of the final results. I like the smokiness of the brown sugar, but really I think as long as you get the sweet in there somehow that’s the important thing. Though now that I mentioned honey my brain is running…

The test didn’t include a picture, I think it went to the UK, so if it’s bullshit they did a nice job of guessing. He has really funny vocal characteristics. When you pet him he growls but it is not aggressive. He does howl now and then but not that much. He plays ball like a lab and people usually think that’s what he is. The other thing about him is how he loves the cold weather, he just runs around and wags like mad.

We go for simple preparations you can do over a campfire. Like grilled an hour after catching, with salt and pepper. It draws a crowd from downwind.

With the smaller pieces I poach and chill them, then do a cold salmon salad spread with minced scallions, capers, mayo, celery seed, black pepper, etc.

Are you a vegetarian or a vegan? If just a veg, are you ovo-lacto? I’m asking because I’m trying to challenge myself culinarily and develop more vegetarian dishes.

Fair question, and thanks for the interest. I quit eating meat 15 or so years ago. The biggest challenge (no offense intended to present company) is explaining. I eat eggs, dairy and everything else but meat. People act like taking one element out of your daily diet is like going on white bread and filtered water.

    You wouldn’t believe the questions:
“So fish. Do you eat fish?”
Would that be fish meat or vegetable fish you’re referring to?

“Shrimp? My sister’s a Vegetarian and she eats shrimp”
Shrimp is meat. Your sister is not a vegetarian.

I’m not an absolutist. If I’m halfway between Detroit and London and only turkey sandwiches are left for the in-flight meal I’ll eat that rather than punish myself over principles.

My 93 year old grandmother doesn’t know I don’t eat meat. Diet is important to me but hospitality is paramount. I eat the hamburgers, turkey, whatever at her house and don’t fret. I have no right to impose on her to accommodate me.

UMD Bulldogs win the last game ever in the old DECC, 2-1 over Denver. I can’t wait to see the new rink but it will probably be a couple of years before I can get there.

God I remember some great concerts there back in the day, even though it was too small for many of the big groups. In the old days the whole floor had no seats and everything else was festival. They ruined it when the put seats down there in the late eighties.

@Ross Hershberger: “He don’t eat no MEAT??”

    (pause)

“Oh that’s okay, I make lamb.”

I think there is a lot of confusion as to what constitutes a vegetarian. For some it means no red meat, for others only seafood, and some (like you) who eschew animal flesh altogether but still eat other animal based products. Because the definitions are all over the map, the questions turn endless. At least I know what I could and could not cook for you should you choose to come to Seattle, and there’s a very good vegetarian Thai place not far from my house. Plus I make eggplant just about everything. It’s amazing how if you get just a little creative you can satisfy even carnivores.

I’m gonna politely dodge that one because it’s too close to the vegetarian diet ‘what about?’ game, which I lost interest in playing a decade ago.

I have had live earthworms in my fridge continuously for 27 years, however* They’re for my twistneck turtle Barney. I’m a veggie but every day I kill two worms feeding them to old Barn. I’m fine with that because he needs to eat live worms. But I don’t, and that’s the difference.

    Congratulations UConn.

In attempting to describe Daniel Pipes, there are the roadblocks of not only politics but I/P, and that nothing I write will stop him from being subjected to ridicule. However I can write something unquestionably nice. Pipes’s criterion for I/P relations is “victory”– P accepts I as J state. After this has happened the matter of dividing up WB/J&S will be simple. By this criterion, O and everything that happened afterwards was a sham. By this same criterion, when evaluating presidents you have to make a distinction between the “music” and the “words”. The “words” are accepting O as legitimate and cajoling the I side to have more and more talks. That could have been a lot more demagogic than it was in the sense that the crowd desired red-meat Obama-bashing. Pipes also said that Obama’s being born a Muslim has no bearing on whether he is one now.

(Yes, I know Clinton got them to recognize I. That is different from accept. And I am not Pipes anyhow.)

But based on seeing the way Martinez can play when healthy, I just think he is gonna be a monster quarterback with a little more seasoning. The stats he put up before his injury were amazing for a freshman.

They used c4 fuse, I believe… talk about fast burning… you’d reach out to hit the fuse w/ the torch and WHHHHHHHHHOOMMMMP… it’s go off before you could blink… and when an 8″ mortar goes off a ft & a half away, you get such a nice thump in your chest…

Agreed. You get ONE show to sum up the year after Christmas but either just before or after the New Year. That’s it. And it needs to be culturally relevant. Otherwise STFU please and thank you.

@The Dangerman: I saw that one, it reminded me of the match head volcano I made when I was a kid – real small scale though. I love Mythbusters.

@Yutsano: Exactly. And, get off my lawn, you kids.

P.S. You do understand that I would do away with Christmas itself, right?

@JPL: The light! yeah I do have a light in the ceiling.

Wrote down all the color suggestions. Gonna sleep on them. I saw a color tool on one website and actually took pics of the bathroom.

    @soonergrunt:

Well, you know what they say. Assholes will be assholes.

That’s true. But who are you speaking of in this instance?

@Corner Stone: Why don’t we just talk about nothing but Padma Lakshmi from here on out. Common ground and all that.

Before I go to bed, I almost felt like clicking on every single name her to go “hey, that was great” “hey, i agree” “hey you don’t say what?”
and put them all in one post with nothing else so no one would know what the hell each one of those 3984398 people said unless they clicked and so John could once see how impossible it is to know what people are talking about but I know I am peeing in teh wind.

I mean not even a commenting thread like The People’s Voice which is a brand new blog?

That being said, soonergrunts post about his wife and xmas was adorable and made me almost sick because I have not started to shop yet and our tree is not up or bought and I”m freaking out. So that is all the blogster time I can handle this weekend.
