The classic enemy of my enemy situation rears its repellent head.
Go Steelers.
I shall now officially vomit in the corner.

14 of the 16 1st and 2nd place teams play each other today. I think.
morzer
So now you know not to wolf down an hundred rum balls for breakfast.
J.
That’s what happens when you eat too many bourbon balls. ;-P
Go Jets! Boo Steelers! (Though currently I’m rooting for the Giants. Go G-Men!)
And if you guys haven’t seen it yet, JibJab’s new Year in Review video, featuring Obama, Biden, and the gang, is out.
Martin
Wow, you know you have it bad when you expect the team to play to your schedule.
4jkb4ia
I am gobsmacked. There is a meaningful game involving the Rams and the Chiefs.
Mike Tanier/Football Outsiders/NYT:
Ow.
Mike Tanier neglects in this short wrapup that some of the less losing, even according to him, has been giftwrapped by the officials. But at 3 o’clock it is going to be a long day.
S. cerevisiae
I have this mental picture of altars, incense and candles with some kind of sacrifice – maybe sacrificing a salmon to Tunch.
Admiral_Komack
Now see, if you had shared those rum balls with me, you wouldn’t have this problem.
But, noooooo… :-(
GO RAIDERS!
Moses2317
Go Steelers! Thought I am worried about this game because Polamalu won’t be playing.

If you lived out here it would be an 11:00 am game and your rituals would have been performed in a timely manner.
Also, although it’s raining, it’s warmer.
Also also, both our Senators voted for DADT.
Snicker.
JPL
You know who else probably forgot the time of the game…Broder that’s who. Does that prove that Cole and Broder are related?
mr. whipple
Yer gonna be really, really drunk by 4.

w00t! Go Falcons by god!!

@S. cerevisiae:
I suspect Cole rips out a Blue Dog heart as the victim stands upright in the steel(er) cage and the crowd chants hymns to Kali….

@JPL:
Hmm.. of course, Sarah Palin probably never knew the time of the game…. how far can we take these equivalencies?
lamh32
Are the Saint’s playing today?? I don’t really watch the games much. The last game I watched was the Thanksgiving game between the Saints and Dallas. I try not to watch the games cause I’m a little superstitious. Every game I watch, the Saints tend to lose. When I dont’ watch, they win. Case in point, I watched much of the game on Thanksgiving, up to the point where Dallas came roaring back. it really did look like the Saints were gonna lose. So I left with about 5 min left in the game I think, and I kid ya’ll not, but as I was standing outside my aunts house on her porch, I hear this roar from inside the house, I believer that it was when the Saints came back and later I found out they won. So I don’t watch their games anymore.

Was there naked mopping?
Go Iggles!

Damn you are dumb morzer. Alaska does not have a football team. Thus your Logic is flawed. What Alaska has is ice road truckers and crab fishermen, and you can bet that Sarah knows when these TV shows start. Therefore, Sarah Palin is smarter than John Cole.
lamh32
BTW John,
If your boy Manchin thought using “family obligations” as an excuse for not being there for the votes yesterday, was gonna get him some cover from Repub scornn, then he was sadly mistaken. From TPM:
Joe Manchin Skipped DREAM And DADT Votes For A Christmas Party

@Brick Oven Bill:

Did you think of that all by yourself, or did Sarah load your popgun for you?
Michael D.
Falcons!
All the fucking way to the Super Bowl, bitches!!
stuckinred
@Michael D.: Hell yes!!!!!
Old Dan and Little Ann
Tip #1 for tailgating. Find out when the game starts.
Go Stillers!
@Moses2317 Polamalu may miss the rest of the season until the playoffs which sucks ass. They went into the tank last year after he got hurt. But if he’s near 100 percent for the playoffs it’ll be all good.
You Don't Say
Go Chiefs, Texans and Saints! (I have a parlay with spouse. :)
Brick Oven Bill
Stop touching me morzer.
While Sarah might be able to pull off a speech with only notes written on her hand, and inspires attractive Teabagger females to show up to our events, she is but a distraction to us Teabaggers. I load my own pop-gun. But Sarah does know her TV schedules.
Now, the reason the Jets will lose is the spiral.
PaulW
you can watch the Bucs-Lions game instead.
morzer
@Brick Oven Bill:
Well, if you are a paid-up scrotum-sucker I can see why you have to load your own popgun. Tell me, does Sarah have someone else read her the schedule, or does she just sit before the magic box, slack-jawed in wonder as the little pictures move and speak?
Kevin
@lamh32:
I hear you…That’s been my rule of thumb for 25 years. If I care who wins, in any sport, I avoid watching because they then lose at about a 75 % rate.
I still blame myself for ruining the Patriots undefeated season. My personal jinx record has destroyed too many heavy favorites :-)
burnspbesq
The Steelers want today’s game.
The Jets need it.
Should be interesting.
Meanwhile, G-Men continue to lead the Green Pond Scum. I’ve liked DeSean Jackson since I first saw him in high school, but not today, homie.
And for all you Texans, Pennsylvanians, Ohioans, and Floridians out there who think your high school football is all that, consider the following. The high school that has sent the most players to the NFL? That would be Long Beach Poly, of Long Beach, California.
JPL
The game that I am allowed to see by the TV lords in Atlanta
is the Ind/Jax game and Manning is playing to win.
Why is there only one game showing now but at 4 when the Falcons play there are two?
sherifffruitfly
Pretty sure shitty game scheduling this week is further proof of Obama’s corporatism and betrayal.
Just Some Fuckhead
I believe you may have jinxed the Steelers. You better come up with a cleansing ritual and then do the initial ritual all over again at 4.
FlipYrWhig
@sherifffruitfly: He could’ve changed it by now if he wanted to, so the fact that he hasn’t means that he likes it this way.
Just Some Fuckhead
@JPL:
Yeah, we got the same game here despite the fact Baltimore is nearly as close as Washington and the Saints @ Ravens would be a much better game to watch. Must be a network conspiracy. Hint to the network: no one wants to see Jacksonville.
You Don't Say
Go Chiefs!
lol
*beep* *beep* *beep*
That’s the sound of the Seahawks backing into the playoffs.
jrosen
Out of the closet! I am a Pats fan. But before you jump down my throat, may I point out that (1) I respect the Steelers and always have (2) the Jets, not so much…I’m not fond of bloviators (3) I really hate the Ravens, because (a) I am originally from Cleveland (in the Jim Brown days), and the Ravens screwed a loyal and long-suffering fan base when they moved to Baltimore and (b) Ray Lewis (c) I want to see them in the playoffs this year for…well, you know.
I feel that, having lived in NE for 35 years (1972-2007, now in NJ)) and having suffered beyond endurance through the Billy Sullivan years (remember 1-15 in 1991?) I have earned the right to my allegiance. I also do vote and think liberal (the one time I pulled the lever for a Repub was for Weld, who is not a Repub by today’s standards. Mainly this was because I had had personal; dealings with his opponent John Silber, and knew that at heart the latter was a fascist,
So if you want to skewer me, please do it gently. In the meantime….Go Steelers!
Andy K
Meh.
I can assure you that there’s someone sitting in the parking lot of the Stadium View performing their pregame ritual right now.
For next week’s Packers-Giants game.
Packers fans +700
morzer
@Andy K:
+700?
That’s quite an alcohol capacity you have there. Are you going to view the game from a personal vat of whisky?
Brick Oven Bill
Sarah has Todd to help with TV schedules morzer. In contrast, Barack has to rely on Dave, because Michelle is either raiding the refrigerator, or flying off to Hawaii. I think Dave secretly thinks Barack is kind of a dummy, so this is not the best set-up for Barack. Perhaps Barack is off to throw out the first pitch.
There exists, by the way, no Teabagger dues, nor a shortage of female assistants ready and willing to assist with TV schedules, or loading pop-guns. But it is always a good practice to maintain self-sufficiency. Our various adornments are but a pleasant distraction, to be enjoyed and celebrated for sure, but never to be relied on.
This way, we don’t miss our favorite TV shows.

@Brick Oven Bill:

@Just Some Fuckhead: Say a prayer to Chthulu, sacrifice a chicken to Tunchie, recite four Hail Polamalus, and it’s all good.
Hm. Hoping for a double dose of sweet Manning tears today. And, I cannot believe I have to fucking root for the Patriots for a second week in a row. Sigh.
P.S. The Vikes game is at the Minnesota Tax Payers Stadium* tomorrow night. This outta be good for some giggles.
*Gophers Stadium.
@morzer: So glad to see you back in fighting form, sir.
Andy K
@morzer:
Well, not me. I’m almost 6 years sober. But I’ve been to the Stadium View lot at 7AM for a noon start, and joined the party in full swing.

Andy K
@morzer:
I might be exaggerating, but not by much.
I was at the Snow Globe game against the Seahawks a few years back, and the dude sitting behind me could only say one word, “Awesome,” over and over. Even when we were down 14-0 in the first two minutes of the game.
As much as my

Reminds me of the party I attended at the age of 16, when some random idiot decided to sit next to me on the couch and repeat “Elvis is king, man” without a break. I left after about ten minutes when he began whacking my knee to emphasize the word “king”. Waste of a good couch, in my opinion.
burnspbesq
G-Men lead 24-3 at the half. Ten points in the last minute. Like it.
Andy K
@stuckinred:
Yeah, go figure. You actually realize that there’s a game going on.
Unless sitting in the bleachers at Wrigley, that is. That’s where you go to pick up tips in order to hone your Foster Brooks impression.
Ross Hershberger
@Brick Oven Bill:
It just got a lot more fun.

You know, if the Bengals can blow this game against the Browns (not a tall order), and Carolina holds on to win, I’m pretty sure that means Bengals get first draft pick.
Hmmmm…

Well, that was a disastrous second quarter.
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
I really do love that film.
Demy got the whole singing the dialogue thing from his childhood. His father owned a garage in Nantes, the radio was always on, and dad and the employees were always singing things like, “Hand me that wrench, would you?”
4jkb4ia
@sherifffruitfly:
Definitely if I am not allowed to see the Jets-Steelers it will be all Obama’s fault. It was already high probability because the Rams are on CBS this week.
4jkb4ia

Hey! If the Rams win at Seattle the last week of the season they are probably in.

The Lions are looking good again this week. I hope I’m not jinxing them here, but they might actually get a road win today.

@4jkb4ia: Which game you watching?
@Andy K: That’s a great backstory. I will have to watch the rest of it to see which side of the line I fall on. Like I said, I love musicals, but it’s a bit odd to hear all the dialogue sung.

@4jkb4ia: So, you’re rooting for the Rams?
@Yutsano: Hon, the way you gripe about your team, one would think they were terrible. They have a chance of making the playoffs. How terrible can they be? Oh, wait. OK. My ass will be here when you get back.

Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Well, ya know, it isn’t really a musical in any traditional sense. There’s no verse/chorus structure to the lyrics, nor any rhythm nor purposeful rhyme. There’s no choreography, unless you count when the leads go dancing after they visit the theater. They just happen to be singing words that would normally be spoken.
@stuckinred:
I’ve been following the Cubbies since 1977 (when we first got cable up here), and didn’t get to the park until the ’90s. Culling anecdotal evidence from various sources- including my own memory- that sort of behavior was limited to weekends and series against the Cards until Harry arrived. Then it became an everygame occurrence.

I’d probably be a Dead fan if not for all of the tedious stoners who tried to make me one. One side of Elvis Costello usually got them out of the room.
I didn’t listen to vinyl much for a long time because I’m lazy.
Then I designed an RF remote control for my turntable so I can run the thing from anywhere within a city block. Technology in the service of indolence.

@burnspbesq: And the New Riders. Funny, Live Dead was the poe for me but, like you, it led to what we now probably call “ya’llternative”. The were also tinges in the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Amazing Rhythm Aces and Little Feat. By the mid 70’s most of the people I knew had given up on rock and gone totally country. The breaking point for me was being forced to sit down during an Airplane gig at the U of I. The revolution was over.

OT: So usually Jason Linkins from HuffPo does a snarky liveblog of the Sunday shows every week. This week, he changed it up a little and instead of liveblogging MTP, the “liveblogged” a little movie called “White Christmas”.

Then, game over.
We go to the Eagles-Giants game, see two plays (the touchdown that tied the game and following kick-off), then “due to NFL rules, we cannot show you any more of the game”.

@efgoldman: Yes, he was.
Go, Stillers!
Hey, Cole, did you redo your pregame rituals?
@New Yorker: Oh. That had to hurt to watch. I think your gf bringing you cookies will make you feel better.
@JordanRules: Man. It was awesome. Dude dropped the punt, picked it up, picked his way through the defenders, ran across the goal line (to make sure time had expired), then ran in. Just amazing. Sorry you had to miss it!

I am completely lost here.
Why, if you are the Giants, do you not run the ball to the outside, and if you don’t get the first down you defend for one play and go into overtime? Why on earth to take the chance on punting the ball to DeSean Jackson in that situation?
This is the biggest brain-fart in the history of the National Football League. Coughlin must go.

@asiangrrlMN:
Yeah, wow. Hate Vick, but gee wizzers, what an ending.

@Andy K: That’s what makes these last 2 wins so sweet. They’ve managed to win with a 3rd string QB and a kicker that didn’t have a job for the first half of the season. The D-line has been a monster lately and the secondary has done a far better job than most expected. Next thing you know, people will be complaining that they won too many games and screwed up their chance for a high draft pick.
CJ had an awesome game and Morris was a pleasant surprise. He really picked up the slack in the running game.
asiangrrlMN
@Svensker: Exactly. I have the same scenario for the Iggles (win, but Vick gets knocked out of the game) that I do for the Vikes (win, but Favre gets knocked out of the game). No matter, it was incredible.

Funny thing, I think the timing and angles worked because of the fumble.
Andy K
@stuckinred:
Meh. The Stillers’ defensive line caused a lot of INTs.
Stats don’t tell the full story. Jimmy Johnson of the ’60s 49ers led the league in picks his rookie year, iirc, but then barely got any more through the rest of his career- because QBs wouldn’t throw the ball anywhere near him if they could help it. He was probably the best CB of his era or any preceding era, but it took forever for him to get into the HoF because his teams weren’t that good and his stats didn’t pop.

In other sports news, the UConn women blew away Ohio State, bringing their winning streak to 88 games. This matches the longest winning streak in the history of men’s college basketball, achieved by UCLA in the 1970s.
As much as I loathe Luigi, this is an amazing accomplishment. Well done, Huskies.

@Andy K: John has a whiny steelers thread going.
Andy K
@stuckinred:
Whiny? Damn, hate to even wonder what he’d be like if he ejaculated prematurely.

OK, Tebow is having a great start today. Maybe he had his preacher come bless his balls.
Footballs, that is.

The Seachickens are actually playing half decently today. What gives? Witchery? Voo-doo? An alternate reality?
Andy K
@stuckinred:
Got it. I have commenced to needling Coach Cole in that thread.

Excellent drive.

To everyone who ever complained about the “prevent defense”: the Giants just gave the textbook demonstration of what happens when you don’t use it.
Up seven, three minutes left, Eagles have no timeouts, ball on the Eagles’ 10. Drop everyone back into coverage, keep the play in front of you, make them advance in 5-yard chunks, trade space for time. Instead the Giants kept blitzing, Vick broke off two big runs, and the Eagles went 90 yards in a minute.

I don’t want to see a Pats-Eagles SB for what may be a unique reason: I’ve outed myself as a Patriots fan (for my 70th birthday my attorney son bought 2 clubhouse seats for a game in Foxborough and we took a weekend to see it (we live in Jersey).
But I am a “retired” musician who conducts a community (high-end amateur) orchestra in Philadelphia, and I am very fond of my players. I’d be rather conflicted if its Philly – NE. (For what it is worth, when we won last time it was due more to Reid’s mismanagement of the clock that any miracles by Brady.) And one of my best players (the lead double-bass) is from Pittsburgh.
We all have to remember that it’s still just a game…even if sports is the last civilized way for us to have local loyalties.
Pittsburgh at the half is not looking dominant today. Get busy, John!

Bullseye!

Excellent Steelers drive. If they play like that against us, we will have a tough game.
