As a football whore who can’t commit to either the team from the city I grew up in (Lions) or the city I have been living in for the past 20 years (Eagles) today has been awesome! Plus I am fully stocked with rum balls and wine and looking at two weeks of vacay. Life is good. I love you all man! Kathy plus lots of wine.

How the hell did the Steelers lose to the damn Jets today, Cole?
Jets just got whomped by the Pats and embarrased by the Dolphins, yet they can beat the Steelers?

@Yutsano: McCain stated outright that he was voting against it ’cause he was mad about DADT. And surely as Waylon Smither follows Mr Burns, so to did Lindsey Graham his mean old man
“If you really want to have a chance of passing START, you’d better start over and do it in the next Congress because this lame-duck has been poisoned,” Graham said, referring to the legislative session that followed the November congressional elections.

@Kathy: If John Mara doesn’t fire Tom Coughlin tomorrow, I’m going to be very disappointed. And I’m prepared to be disappointed because the Mara family doesn’t operate that way. But this really needs to be Coughlin’s last year at the helm of the Giants. How many second half of the season collapses can we take?
Also, I think the next time DeSean Jackson taunts another team before stepping or falling into the end zone for a touchdown, someone ought to seriously injure him. What a classless asshole. (I’ll put this in context–I hate the Cowboys even more than I hate the Eagles. But when he did his back flop into the end zone in Dallas, I couldn’t believe the Eagles found a bigger asshole than TO.)

Obviously I have no idea of the accuracy of these claims, but this Robert Kuttner piece on Obama and Social Security is on Politico (as an opinion piece) and it is highly likely to be discussed.
The claim by Kuttner is that he has reliable info that Obama will introduce reforms (he’s assuming cuts) to Social Security in the State of the Union speech.
Most of the piece is devoted to political analysis of why this would be happening (if it were to do so) and how it would affect the country and Democrats politically. (Hint: on both, very negatively.)
No matter who would or would not be in office, I always had assumed that there would soon be some sort of reduction in Social Security coming, whatever the reality of this argument by Kuttner.
Kenneth

FWIW: Now that the gays can fight openly in his never ending wars Obama is going to destroy Social Security and announce it during the State of the Union.

Just spent a good 15-20 minutes reading the Wikipedia entry on Sen. McInsane’s old man.
Talk about the apple not falling very far from the tree. McCain’s old man graduated near the very bottom of his Naval Academy class. Was apparently a fuck-up during the early part of his naval career but blossomed as a sub commander in WWII. Turned into a big time cheese-eater with the DC politicians in DC in the late 50s-early 60s about the time Sen. McWalnuts was about to graduate from the Naval Academy. Evidently got his fourth star on a political favor from Johnson to Everett Dirksen for breaking the filibuster on the ’64 Civil Rights Act.
The more I read about McCain the more I realize that he is just the same as Dubya–a silver spoon boy with a bad attitude and a nasty temper who wouldn’t have risen to managing a 7-11 w/o his family connections.
Rhoda
@El Cid: Yeah, I don’t buy it. First, Kuttner has no sources in Obama-world. Second, I think it’s pretty clear that the White House telegraphed their deficit reduction play and it’s tax reform. Chuck Todd was the first to let it slip and the whole thing built to POTUS mentioning it himself twice. It works because (1) it’s moves the meme from cutting spending towards taxation to keep the recovery and (2) it’s a fight Republicans LOVE to have.
So, I don’t buy it. The Obama budgets have always been incredibly progressive and I don’t envision him changing that now; I do think a big tax fight is a good way to take the fight to Republicans because even through since they control the house they can control the debate they have no ideas and they’ll gladly latch onto this fight.
Kenneth

Meanwhile, to try to make myself clearer. I don’t buy that story. Mostly, because I’m pretty sure POTUS is looking to get re-elected. And the fact that the opinion story you linked to has no facts to back it up and is based on an assertion I don’t think that dude is qualified to make since he’s not connected to the administration and has his own axe to grind about Obama. But we’ll just wait for the State of the Union and it’ll all be as clear as Michelle screaming about Whitey trying to steal the election.

El Cid
@Yutsano: For my part I didn’t ask anyone to believe that the well-placed sources were correct, much less suggesting they be gospel truth*.
@Rhoda: You could entirely be correct. I wouldn’t be surprised either way, and not because any particular analysis of Obama, but because I expect serious SS cuts — maybe Medicare, despite some cost reductions via HCR — to happen sooner or later.
Such speculation by Kuttner is of course anything but “official”.
*Leaving aside, of course, the antiquated notion of using the gospels chosen to appear in the New Testament as some standard of truth.

@Elizabelle:
Here’s the recipe: 1 stick butter (room temp), 1 lb box powdered sugar, 1/2 cup Maker’s Mark bourbon, 1 C chopped pecans, 12 oz good dark chocolate, paraffin (about 1/2 of a cake), about 50-60 pecan halves.
Soak 1C chopped pecans in 1/4 bourbon at least 4 hours (covered). Cream butter and sugar, add nuts and the other 1/4 bourbon. Cover and refrigerate until really cold (overnight is best). With gloves on, make 1″ diameter balls on cookie sheets and freeze. Melt chocolate with paraffin. Using a straightened safety pin, stab pin in the top of a ball, dip, and then push off the pin using a fork, onto wax paper. Place pecan half on top. @Kenneth: It’s a bad place to be in as a progressive. Partly we have to accept here and now that there simply is no one to run a primary challenge with. No one articulate and charismatic and yet not so far left as to freak the world out. More than that, you’d need someone powerful enough to just about make Obama want to step aside and compel unity in the party — yeah, no avatar on the radar, eh?
And while in theory, a case for primarying the president could be made as a way in which the party as a whole might be pushed to… well at least left center, or to send a message — the damage that would ensue would truly destroy the party. We got a taste of that in the bitter after effect of the Hillary group. It lingers, it festers and we can get nothing done with a divided party. Hell, we can’t get much done with the party as it is.
I had to choke out a “god bless joe-freaking-lieberman” this week. And an attaboy to Obama, who despite his personal dislike of marriage equality, got DADT done. That was right action, and another brick in the wall falling. You can see from the reaction of this list that you are pushing against the mainstream of the left. Progressive are the minority on the left and we need to consolidate that power in a way that is not destructive or vindictive. That means letting Obama go entirely, because he is not the problem, he is the result of failed liberal/corporate politics from decades back — we need to change the system and that will happen from the ground up. But it also means voting (and sucking it up and organizing) for Obama in 2012. And maybe we tweak with the down ticket where we can. Because there is no other choice.
The argument on this list, and god help me if only FDL would stop with the irrational fury – there also, will continue to rest in hammering on liberal principles. We can figure out the progressive platform, find that Great Society meme and resurrect it from the early death it appears to be headed to — but only if we don’t get lost in the division and despair that anger most assuredly leads to. The center will move to the left in another generation; hell, the right has moved center on this list in what 7 years? Have faith. Get that wicked, insane, I will take care of you all even if you hate my guts, progressive face back on.
Shade Tail
Keep punching those hippies, firebaggers. I know it isn’t easy being a keyboard commando, constantly being upstaged by the actual progressives who are succeeding at getting liberal laws written. So go ahead and get it out of your system. Punch, punch, *punch* those hippies.
pattonbt
@Kenneth: Dude, are you OK? Do you need a cookie and a time out?
I don’t know what country you thought you were living in, but the chasm between what you think the US is (or could be) and what you want it to be makes the Grand Canyon look like a crack in the sidewalk. You seem to believe in minutes and wishing instead of years and work. Sure that sucks when there is great injustice out there, but you have to start from a realistic starting point.
I don’t have any false illusions about where the country is heading or where it has been in it’s past, but I do think in the long run it is improving. It will never be perfect (as it is a human endeavour that is impossible) and it will never meet all of my needs nor most of my wants, that’s just the way it is. And yes, there are many egregious things that I would love to see fixed right now because they are right and moral, but I know you can’t change things overnight and sometimes you can never change them.
The US has never been a progressive country and is far, far away from being one. In addition it is currently institutionally hamstrung from making radical leaps forward in that direction. You can wish for it all you want and work hard to get there, but any semblance of even a center left country is a couple of decades away – minimum.
Seriously, I can not imagine what you expected to happen between Jan 2009 and now. Maybe you should take a second and reflect and realize maybe your expectations were so far gone that you now find yourself in a position that all you have left is to lash out at others for your misconceptions. Because either you knew from jump street that nobody (Democrat or likewise) was going to deliver what you obviously are advocating in the time frame you were expecting or you misjudged the landscape very badly, and I have to assume it is the latter because your butt hurt is strong and if you didn’t have unrealistic expectations you wouldn’t be so whiny now.
I’ll admit, I too had higher expectations because I thought the US had dipped low enough for real change to start. I was mistaken. And I hate to admit that, but it’s true. The US is on a long slide and the positive changes will barely be in my lifetime. It sucks to know that. And even then, there is no guarantee it will ever get to where I (we) want it to be.
I know it hurts to see so much injustice and be impotent from making it go away, but wishing it away really doesn’t work as a an action plan and strategy. I guarantee no other D president would be in any better place right now than Obama (and I say that knowing the good and bad of his administration) on all of the major issues the US faces.
And DADT is a VERY important step because it starts to crumble the “moral majority” bullshit (but previously very strong) argument from being played like a sledgehammer. We are starting to see that witch hunt of the “the other” start to die. It’s too slow for my preference but it is changing. And as more social barriers are broken for gays and minorities the more equitable the country becomes and moves us in the right direction. Hopefully, DOMA is the next brick to fall. The more open the society becomes, the harder it is for the assholes in this world to hide. So for me, ending DADT is huge.
But I guess for you it must be nice to live in fantasy land where you can change the world with a snap of the fingers (and judge others based on the same assumption of powers). That hasn’t worked for me yet, but it must have for you because that seems to be how you think things work.
I will quote my favorite line from Bad Santa “Well kid, wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up first”.
Grow up.
