Mr. Upright
Ahh, Andy. A great fellow Tarheel.
asiangrrlMN
Woot woot! Thanks dengre. Much appreciated.
Go, Bears! Go, Pack! The best part about my team sucking is that I can root for the teams I really like.
Angry Black Lady
I was just coming over to add one of these “open threadz” at the insistence of the frozen gentlewoman from Minnesota.
stuckinred
GO BEARS!
The dire warnings of road conditions through the mountains and around Charlotte were a hoax!
asiangrrlMN
@Angry Black Lady: Woman does not live on politics and cute animals alone! There MUST be sports! And, if there are sports, there must be bitching about said sports.
@stuckinred: I’m right there with you, big guy. Glad travel is OK, too.
stuckinred
You remember DG, Sanford Stadium, whiny artsy people bitching about the awful football crowds. “Athens, a drinking town with a football problem”!
Brick Oven Bill
asiangrrlMN is not gentle.
And screw the Bears.
stuckinred
@Brick Oven Bill: fuck you dickhead, Bears take the lead! Fuck you again.
Andy K
Lions-Dolphins is…interesting.
ETA: Like last winter, the heavy snow has been missing us in West Michigan. This last storm skirted to the south again.
And with that, it’s off to the shower. Gotta go to the sports bar to watch the Pack with the family.
Joey Maloney
I’m sure the Bears will find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
I just realized that I became a Bears fan because I’m a lifelong Democrat. It’s…comfortable.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: Good way or bad?
ETA: So, interesting in a non-interesting way. Gotcha!
@Brick Oven Bill: Am, too! And, I will poke you repeatedly with my rusty pitchfork until you agree!
@Joey Maloney: Ha. I would laugh harder, except I know the feeling as a Vikings fan.
Um, Bears? Defense? Try it.
ETA: Out of curiosity, anyone else watching the Bears game have his/her audio blink in and out?
stuckinred
@Joey Maloney: “Become” a Bear fan! Is you is or is you ain’t?
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Somewhere in the middle. Nothing great happening, nothing stupendously bad. Inconsistent- but they’re putting up points.
Kathy
Bah, Eagles game postponed due to snow. Not for the players but because no one in this entire city can effing drive once snow is forecast. As a transplant from Michigan, I hang my head in shame.
Joey Maloney
@stuckinred: Since the McMahon/Walter Peyton/Singletary/Fridge era.
goblue72
Pats doing some obscene things to Buffalo today. Home field advantage throughout the playoffs here we come!!!
Andy K
@stuckinred:
That calls for this.
stuckinred
@Joey Maloney: Hell yes, I go back to Sayers, Butkus and Bob Avellini but I’m old.
stuckinred
@Andy K: Nice
Jade Jordan
If the NFL insists on having games go into February, they must insist on domed stadiums for football.
asiangrrlMN
@Kathy: Wait, what? Postponed until when? Still tonight or no? I NEED to know (Vikes fan here).
ETA: Well, crap. So what game are they showing on the teevee tonight?
ETA, part deux: Nice pass, Cutler!
ETA, part trois: It seems there will be no game shown tonight. Drats!
stuckinred
@Jade Jordan: They need to tear down the one in the ATL!
Andy K
@Kathy:
I don’t know how long you’ve been gone, but it seems as if winter driving skills have deteriorated her in Michigan over the past decade or so. Not that the roads have become like California in a rainstorm, but still not good.
stuckinred
Touchdown Chicago Bears!
Joey Maloney
@stuckinred: I had no interest in spectator sports when I was a little kid. Dick Butkus was the speaker at some function when I was a Cub Scout, and I had absolutely no idea who he was.
Ross Hershberger
@Andy K:
I was in Lansing yesterday and drove east out of it. Flurries here in Th’ D.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of snow headed your way once a weather system out of the Canadian arctic finds the right path across warm Lake Michigan.
stuckinred
@Joey Maloney: Mr Mean! He was the color guy for Illinois football in the 70’s. We were in the same motel in Iowa city and I saw him in the parking lot. I said “hello Mr Butkus”. He grunted.
stuckinred
@Ross Hershberger: It was intense driving through the North Carolina mountains this morning. Fucking idiots from New York and Joisey were driving 75.
Cat Lady
@goblue72:
Just remember these days. When the Tom Brady era is over, we will haz a long sad.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: It’s the same here. We’ve had relatively little concentrated snow the last decade or so (until this year), and, yeah. Driving skills are not what they used to be.
@Cat Lady: At least you HAVE these days. Grumble grumble grumble.
Joey Maloney
@asiangrrlMN: ETA: Out of curiosity, anyone else watching the Bears game have his/her audio blink in and out?
No problems here, but I’m watching the Chicago feed via ivi.tv.
stuckinred
@Joey Maloney: Mine is fine on the cable
asiangrrlMN
@Joey Maloney:
@stuckinred:
Thanks. Good to know it’s just me–again.
Actually, I don’t mind not hearing Jim and Phil, but I do miss the Sounds of the Game (TM) when the audio goes out.
@Kathy: Sounds plausible to me, actually, given how much the NFL luuuuuurves Favre.
goblue72
@Cat Lady – at least until Brady, Jr. is old enough to play football. Course Junior will need to fit in a modeling career at some point.
Dennis G.
@stuckinred:
I remember back in the day when we printed and sold these cheesy “Walker My Dawg” bumper stickers–just a bunch of townie hipsters cashin’ in on the ‘football problem’. Good times…
Kathy
@asiangrrlMN: Not sure about tonight. Of course us calm logical Eagles fans believe that the NFL did this on purpose to give Faurve time to recover.
@Andy K: I have been out here for 20 years, and it has been awhile since I have been there during the winter. Sad to hear about the driving skills. I did enjoy the moral superiority I use to feel :)
To everyone, I am typing on my iPhone. I apologize for reply mess ups.
Yutsano
@goblue72: Apparently you’ve never heard the tale of children with two good-looking parents. They tend to end up rather average in looks. Not exactly sure why.
Why oh why oh why do I think my family has any sort of respect for my timelines? Sigh. I’m gonna have to go the long way home now.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Hi, hon. Just checking in before you drive back?
@Yutsano: Sounds like a plan. Your boys playing today? Mine, apparently, are not.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: The drive back can actually be pushed back some since the mountains just got dicey. The long way will be much smoother but I can also leave later. Which is fine by me. The kitteh might not like so much. In fact I may just leave her here and rescue her next weekend.
burnspbesq
@Mr. Upright:
As we come to the end of a calendar year in which we won two national championships and y’all won zero, let me just say … The dominance will continue in 2011.
burnspbesq
@asiangrrlMN:
Go Bears? We may have to have a throw-down here today.
Andy K
@Ross Hershberger:
Yeah, I know. I’m always looking at fronts forming up in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Alberta Clippers suck.
@asiangrrlMN:
Two years ago we had the most snowfall since records have been kept- but it was a collective effort. No overnight three footers since very early ’99 (and I loved that one- had bought a used Subaru GL wagon five days before it hit. Front wheel to 4WD on the fly, baby!)
stuckinred
@Dennis G.: There was one in Coopers out on Lexington Road that said “Lost, One Big Black Dog, Call Vince Dooley: There Goes Her$$$schel”!
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Yup. The Bucs. I haz a good excuse to not pay attention nicely built in too. :)
stuckinred
@burnspbesq: Fuckin D better step up.
Jewish Steel
I was right to go walk the dogs and not worry over the Bears.
I just test drove my new Kahtoola Microspikes. HOW DOES DEFEAT TASTE, CENTRAL ILLINOIS ICE-SCAPE?
Highly recommended for walkers of strong dogs in icy locales.
Joey Maloney
Bears just missed an easy FG. Up by only 4, that’s the kind of thing that loses games.
Kathy
Have to say this Jets/Bears game is looking pretty interesting but what is the deal with the Jets Defense, I thought they were supposed to be good.
asiangrrlMN
@burnspbesq: Yes. Go, BEARS! My Vikes aren’t going anywhere, and I loooooove my division. So, bring it! Later, I will be rooting for the Pack against the Giants as well.
@Andy K: This is the most snow we’ve had at one time since the Halloween blizzard of ’91. I love it as long as I don’t have to drive.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Then maybe they’ll win! They can still make the playoffs, right?
@Kathy: So is the Bears defense. And yet, look at the score.
stuckinred
@Kathy: Bears O line has been ownin them.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN:
I sense a great disturbance in the Force…
Oh. Wait. Sweet sweet Manning tears. Carry on then.
Jewish Steel
@Kathy:
And what’s the deal with the Bears Tampa 2? Too bendy. Too breaky.
stuckinred
@asiangrrlMN: Tampa? Nah.
Wait, there are 2 wild cards now right? My bad.
Yutsano
For some bizarro reason I no haz edit. FYVMWP.
@asiangrrlMN: I think by sheer numbers they get in. I think. I’ll have to check that with my brother for sure.
stuckinred
@Jewish Steel: Tim Jennings is weak.
JPL
@Kathy: Chicago defense is missing also and because of that I find the game kinda dull.
Yutsano
And I just want to say, for the record, I would do Brian Urlacher. That is all.
asiangrrlMN
@stuckinred: No, Seahawks.
@Yutsano: I know! Second week in a row I’ve rooted for the Pack. Might as well buy a Clay Matthews jersey and be done with it.
@Yutsano: So your type. Do you ever deviate from it?
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Meh.
You guys don’t ever get lake effect blizzards. That’s what the ’99 storm was. Originally predicted about a foot. The front crossed Lake Superior and Lake Michigan at just the proper angle…We get fucked up weather here, due to the lakes and river systems. Our tv meteorologists are really top-notch, but ’99 really tricked ’em.
Okay, see y’all in a bit. Off to Joe V’s.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN:
On occasion. Believe it or not personality makes up for a lot.
Jewish Steel
@stuckinred: Ah, I see.
stuckinred
@Jewish Steel: That’s a bit simplistic but it’ll do.
Kathy
@asiangrrlMN: Usually I root for the old “black and blue” division teams as well, but I have to go with what’s good for my adopted Iggles. Totally rooting for the Pack tonight and will root for your Vikings next week (unless they play the Lions).
stuckinred
As the Bears run up the gut for nothing and then stop the clock on second down, great. And it gets worser.
stuckinred
Great punt!!!!
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: My snowstorms are bigger than yours!
@Yutsano: I do believe you. I just find it funny that you are pretty consistent in your eye candy since I’m all over the map.
@Kathy: You are like me in that I have a very complex hierarchy of teams for which I root. There are all sorts of permutations, including uniform color.
stuckinred
Cutler 0-4 in the 4th.
Jewish Steel
@stuckinred:
This is turning into another, “No, I insist. You win the game,” games
Kathy
@JPL: Point taken but I am a girlie man fan who like high scores.
@Yutsano: He’s not bad but so many of these players are too close in age to my kids to think of in that way.
stuckinred
@Jewish Steel: This ain’t bad but I’m still experiencing the pucker factor.
Brian S (formerly Incertus)
I’m beginning to suspect that Chad Henne and Tony Sparano might be looking for employment in a few weeks.
Jewish Steel
@stuckinred:
Now rooting for the clock. Go clock!
stuckinred
@Kathy: It doesn’t matter what you think it matters what you DO!
Kathy
@asiangrrlMN: Absolutely. I find rooting for just one team so limiting. Since I am happily married, I meet my need for variety in football teams.
Plus, is it true the Lions are still ahead?
Jewish Steel
Special teams + luck.
stuckinred
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
JPL
Chicago Bears defense finally showed up.
Kathy
@stuckinred: Sounds good in theory but I am afflicted with that Catholic guilt thing.
Joey Maloney
Well, how about that? Inter-fucking-ception.
Jewish Steel
Chris Harris! Game ball for you.
stuckinred
@Kathy: Don’t matter where you get your appetite as long as you get your dinner at home!
Kathy
W00t W00t! A 3 game winning streak for the Lions! When was the last time that happened?
stuckinred
@Kathy: More importantly, when will it happen again? :)
Kathy
@stuckinred: True, but I have an easier time lusting after men who are in their 30’s or older. Lots of cute coaches out there.
asiangrrlMN
@Kathy: I think the Lions just won! And, they are playing the Vikes next week. I may root for the Lions just to make things interesting.
I am a single lay-dee, so I can root for whomever I want. (See, it works for both the married and the single people!). And, I hear you on the age thing. Percy Harvins on the Vikes is a cutie, but outside my comfort zone, age-wise. If they can’t rent a car on their own (twenty-five), then they are too young for me.
ETA: Go, Packers!
stuckinred
@Kathy: Brian is 32, you are safe.
Joey Maloney
The sideline ninny at the Green Bay game just told me that the Packers are ready to handle their business. I would advise them to wait until after the game, or at least warm their hands at the salamander first.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Some rental companies will let you rent at 21 for an extra fee. Just sayin’. And yes I am quite aware Peyton has a hobbled knee this week.
asiangrrlMN
@Joey Maloney: TMI! TMI!
@Yutsano: Oh, really? Nice to know.
::files away for future reference::
So does that mean your boy isn’t playing this week?
stuckinred
The Giants punter just kicked it out of bounds!
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
They did! They did win! They were down 10 w/about 6 minutes to go…Got a nice kick (or punt) return that set up a TD….Henne threw a pick that set up a field goal…Then Henne threw a pick 6.
Andy K
Jordy Nelson!
Kathy
@asiangrrlMN: Oooh he is a cutie but more adorable cute than hot cute. Thanks for the good Lions thoughts, i would root for the Vikes if they were playing anyone else, I truly feel for you fans, you have been though too much this year.
@stuckinred: That is good to know. I actually used to like Brett Farve before the text debacle.
burnspbesq
Ugh. Dumbass special teams play in the third quarter cost the Jets the game.
They can still clinch today if Skins beat Jags, and if that doesn’t happen they have Buffalo at home next week.
asiangrrlMN
@Kathy: I loathe Favre. This is one of my complicated things. I want the Vikes to win and Favre to get knocked out of the game. In addition, I do not want the taxpayers of MN to pay for a stadium for the Vikes, which is why I do not root for them to win a Super Bowl or even go to the SB. Sigh. It hurts being in my head.
@Andy K: Your link no work. You fix!
ETA: Bwahahahahahahha! Manning picked. Sweet, sweet Manning tears.
Kathy
@Andy K: Damn East coast! I would have loved to see the end of that game.
stuckinred
@burnspbesq: Skins won in OT.
burnspbesq
@stuckinred:
A week too late :-(
MoeLarryAndJesus
Tom Brady.
No other player in the league deserves to be named in the same post as him this year.
Just the best in the game right now and no, it isn’t close.
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Jordy Nelson!
(I hyperlinked in edit up top- sure I screwed it up somehow)
@Kathy:
You should start scoping out sports bars now so you can watch ’em next year. They’ve made some big strides lately. The playoffs aren’t outside the realm of possibilities.
stuckinred
@MoeLarryAndJesus: blah blah blah
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: That one worked. Bears v. Pack next week. For whom shall I root? Hmmmmm…… Packers up 14-0.
@stuckinred: Agreed. I’m not saying he isn’t in contention, but there are other candidates as well.
ThresherK
I am told by announcers that the “Fox box” is using holiday lights to show the time outs remaining. Well, I consider that a half-measure in sore need of correction.
Anyone else want to see a little animated elf climb a long ladder to unscrew a Christmas light on the “Fox box” when
a team takes a time out?
Oh, and in my metro area the snow is too late to XC ski but early enough to cancel a party. Blecch.
asiangrrlMN
@ThresherK: Why do Joe Buck and Troy Aikman hate the Baby Jeebuz? Sorry about the bad timing on the snow.
Kathy
Wow, awesome catch by Donald Driver. (Switched to my regular computer and can actually use the key board, what a relief.)
MoeLarryAndJesus
@asiangrrlMN:
Sure, there are others in “contention.” But that’s only a formality. Brady is the league’s MVP this year and nothing that happens in the final game will change that.
Especially since he doesn’t even have to play in it.
As for stuckinred, he’s a Bears fan, and Brady castrated the Bears without even breathing hard, so I can sympathize with his pain. I’d be bitter, too, if my team had a sloppy punk like Jay Cutler playing QB.
Kathy
@ThresherK: I feel your pain my friend. We are getting a warm front that is going to make the snow useless from a ski standpoint and heavier to shovel. Plus, I am still in mourning over the Iggles being postponed, I would have loved to see a blizzard bowl.
Andy K
Fuck.
MoeLarryAndJesus
Mario Manningham is a classic sports name.
Kathy
Ack, that turned around way too fast for the Giants. Needs moar Manning interceptions.
Joe Lisboa
GO LIONS!!111!!!!11
Woo- hoo!
Also (O/T, I guess?): anyone else see the WaPo bit which leads with the sweeping expose that POTUS and family are having a quote-unquote rare trip to church today? Who the fuck writes this GOP drivel?And how the fuck does this get passed into the mainstream? Oh wait ….
Happy impending new year, all.
ThresherK
@Kathy: Do you know what would make that experience complete? A fan XC skiing to the game. How crowded are the roads?
Actually, the spouse and I were 12 stories up in a downtown Philly hotel during the blizzard which brought the famous Tuck Rule game some 9 years ago. Like every blizzard, when you’re snug and safely away, it looks much more pleasant.
JPL
@ThresherK: My friend, an avid Patriot fan had turned off the TV before the call was overturned. He assumed they lost until the next day. lol
Kathy
@ThresherK: Roads are pretty deserted. As you say it is much more pleasant to observe a blizzard when you are safe and warm inside. I had forgotten about the “tuck rule.” That game was something to behold.
Andy K
Jebus, I’m bopping between three things online, the game on tv, and my dad.
Has Bradley Manning scored with my sister yet?
Kathy
@Joe Lisboa: I loathe the WP as much as asiagrrll loathes Bret Farve. I would love to see the jerk who took over smeared in honey and set next to a fire ant hill.
Andy K
@Kathy:
But do you loathe WP as much as she loathes WP? Judging by her reactions to both, I think WP sits atop the hierarchy of things hated by asiangrrlMN.
Andy K
Grrrr….Put this game away, Packers.
burnspbesq
@MoeLarryAndJesus:
As much as it pains me to stand up for a former Tarheel, I think you can make a decent case for Julius Peppers. Guy changes opponents’ game plays all by himself.
Steeplejack
Does Tom Coughlin have the worst challenge-fu ever?! He blew his last one on that fumble a while ago, and so just now he didn’t have one for the interception where the DB (probably) didn’t get his second foot in bounds.
Gravenstone
To every “pundit” who declared over the last week that the Giants “needed” this game more, and that Packers would just roll over and die (basically all of the ones I heard) – go fuck yourselves!
Gravenstone
And pick number 6. maybe Coughlin will just commit sepuku tonight in the Green Bay Motel 6, or wherever they’re going to ground.
MoeLarryAndJesus
@burnspbesq:
Yeah, Peppers is a great player. But he won’t get a sniff at the MVP this year.
MoeLarryAndJesus
I’m glad Norm’s Chokers won’t be infecting the playoffs this year. Let Philip Rivers use the off season to perfect his league-best petulant whining. I know he has it in him.
And congrats to Chiefs fans – you guys deserve a good team and a class QB like Cassel.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: I read your comment before I read Kathy’s comment, and I was thinking, why are we talking about WordPress with a ‘the’ in front of it? As for WaPo, it can die in a fire. However, it’s a toss-up which I hate more, WaPo, or WordPress.
I fell asleep. Good to see the Pack got it done.
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
It took a little while, but in the end the Pack really gave it to ’em good.
And, yeah, I thought Kathy was talking about WordPress, which I know you hate. As I pointed out in my preceding comment, I had too much going on.
ThresherK
@Kathy: On second thought, should I be concerned about the number of Iggles fans who might suffer a coronary after half an hour on snowshoes or XC skis?
The best part of our trip was that we were reserved on the train for our 170 miles back. No driving, no airport wait, not even a cab required to get to the station.
4jkb4ia
THE RAMS HAVE THE LAST GAME OF THE REGULAR SEASON, ON NATIONAL TELEVISION!
Please do not choke. Please, please do not choke.
