Do players from Washington get low self esteem from everyone calling them husky all the time?
freelancer
Not if they keep playing this way against Nebraska. Washington is hungry after NU spanked them earlier in the season. The Huskers offense is anemic right now, they look like rookies. Hoping for some turnaround. Go Huskers!
ETA: Okay, Martinez looks to be back to his full speed. If he can show some patience and poise, this will be fun to watch.
MikeJ
Nebraska will win. It’s the Huskers vs the Huskies. Washington will get husked.

No, no, don’t try to throw me a bone now, Cole, you sorry sumbitch. You made me wade through all those crazy-ass women you pissed off on that O’Donnell thread just so we could try to squeeze in some Music City Bowl comments edgewise.

I hope Washington is on alert. Nebraska runs two trick plays: the fumble-ruski and the cornhusker kickback.

@stuckinred:
No I missed that. I did see the helmet to helmet flagged against Tennessee in the last 2 minutes of regulation. That game was ridic. 1 second left, call overruled.
Goddamnit, he got lucky on the TD that he didn’t get picked, this time he paid for it. Fuck. They’d be wise to move Martinez to I-back or WR and get a competent passer. He folds and panics when the pocket crumbles and doesn’t get rid of the ball when he needs to. But, man, can he run.

My picks this year are pretty shit, 7-10 so far, ouch.

The helmetless hit was scary. He’s going to have a goose egg tonight.
So glad to see Tennessee go down I can’t stand it. 5 personal fouls in the last 30 seconds has to be a record — even if they didn’t call the one at the end of the rushing play.
Evolved Deep Southerner
@kdaug: He was riffing off a TBogg post that said, in a nutshell “I’ve seen evil and I’ve seen stupid, and Christine O’Donnell’s just fucking stupid.”
And the women on the thread basically said “Oh, Cole, you sexist, you wouldn’t be saying this if she was a dumbass guy!”
And Cole said “Look, eemom, we ain’t talking about Israel, so why don’t you shut the fuck up.”
And eemom says “You wanna say somethin’ about ME, bitch, you say it to my face!”
You get the idea.

Question for y’all:
1. There is some kind of bowl game tomorrow in Charlotte NC
2. I am an alumna of the University of South Florida, one of the teams
3. I do a lot of work professionally with Clemson, the other team
4. I really don’t give a big rat’s ass about football
MY QUESTIONS:
1. Should I bother to watch the game?
2. Which team should I root for?

Kodak (one of the worst companies ever) has a long history of discontinuing good products (and screwing customers). In the case of Kodachrome, it’s amazing it hung on as long as it did. Of course, if it weren’t for ol’ Dwayne out there is Kanzania, the end would have come a bit sooner.
The two best films ever (personal opinion):
Color: Kodachrome 25
B&W: Tri-X (sheetfilm)
A thank you goes out to Dwayne and a big KMA (not Keep Me Advised or Kill Me Already) to Kodak — you still suck.

Briefly, I’m with the women. O’Donnell is stupid and a mean woman. The two are not mutually-exclusive. She’s just not as cunning as Palin is–otherwise they would be mirror images. OK. Not fair. yes, and another thing about Kodachrome slides –
My Mom documented our childhood – say, 1955-1970 – with a 1950 German 35mm camera – was it an Argosy? – and Kodachrome slides. She stored all the slides – about 1500 – in an old metal WWII Ammo box in the attic on the farm in NoDak in 1975, where they sat – through 100-degree heat and 40-below cold for 30 years.
Three years ago, we found them, and my engineer Brother-in-law somehow got the old slide projector going – which was also in the attic all those years –
and the slides were in perfect condition. Rich, saturated colors, not a hint of fading – it was amazing.
Has anybody else noticed that the phenomenon is widespread – digital camera pictures aren’t as good as Kodachrome, CDs don’t sound nearly as good as old vinyl records, cell phone clarity is absolute crap compared to a 30-year-old, old-fashioned, plug-in-the wall non-portable AT&T princess phone –
like JC said – sad.

Can’t say the same for the bunch of pricks in the school just south of where I live.

The thing people have to understand about the UW is that it’s the only sports franchise in Seattle with anything even approaching a tradition of winning. So yeah, the fans glomp on like grim death and overreact. I root for the Huskies, but ultimately, it is just a freaking football game.

@Comrade Luke:
They barely do. They got screwed by Dan Beebe (Big 12 commish) and sent to the Holiday Bowl (again) to play Washington (again), so there’s a ton of apathy, but that’s no excuse for being undisciplined and mediocre. Pelini’s hard goal for the season was the Big 12 North, he did that. But you can’t start the season as a Darkhorse candidate for a National Championship and end it unranked because you got beat up by the team whose loss to you put you on the map earlier this year. That’s failure by any standard.
Yutsano
@Geoduck: Considering I didn’t expect the Apple Cup to come down to the final play this year…and UW barely qualified for a bowl…I’m trying to decide what this says about Nebraska more than anything.

@Yutsano: Um, the UW pays my paycheck? (Oh, I guess I do have a degree from there).
My theory is that Seattle, being the effete liberal cultured snobs that we are, doesn’t know what to do when faced with the very natural tribalism of a sports team. When faced with some tradition of decentness, they get their noses out of joint…
Yutsano
@gwangung: Well in a sense you pay my paycheck, so I can see where you’re coming from. And it’s not like I don’t know some good folks there, the band director is an old friend of mine. (I know the one at Oregon too but I’m not going to name drop here. :) But oh man I have dealt with Husky arrogance ever since I made the choice to go to Wazzu.
Mark S.
Backup QB is a little wild, but it’d be nice to see the Cornhuskers make a game of this.
There you go. The pass wasn’t five feet over the WR’s head.
Comrade Luke
@Yutsano: Totally agree: GU and WSU are kindred spirits. I don’t like losing to them, but at least I respect them, as opposed to the Fuskies.
Gonzaga beat UW seven of eight times in the aughts. Their home games were filled with GU fans, so they changed their season ticket package so you couldn’t buy the GU game (and only that game) as a single game, but only part of a package. So that got rid of some of us.
Then, the last time we play them at HecEd, they took out our starting PG by undercutting him as he was going in for a layup. Even then they barely won. After that win, UW cancelled the series, claiming that they wanted to play “better competition”. They then filled our slot with…Portland.
Who beat them!
Not that I’m bitter.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: I checked it out. It is very amusing and cute.
Fluff piece done. I need an intervention.

John - A Motley Moose
@reality-based: Nostalgia is all well and good as long as you don’t take everything into account. Kodachrome has a well-deserved reputation for the quality of the images. Now balance that against the cost of film and developing and the added convenience and features of digital cameras. A total of 1,500 slides is about 4 rolls per year for 15 years. She could have taken 15,000 photos for less money with a digital camera.
Vinyl records sound better than cds when new. If they were well cared for then they last for decades. However, most people didn’t take care of their vinyl records. Try finding good quality vinyl today. 99% of them are scratched so badly that they aren’t worth anything, even to collectors. You also don’t have to buy diamond needles to listen to a cd.
As for the hardwired princess phones… They may have sounded fine, if you were home to take or make a call. They sure didn’t sound better when you were in the grocery store and needed to make a call to find out if you should pick up some milk while you are there.
One more thing. In those better times, we didn’t have a way to go online to complain about how much better things were in the old days, because there was no such thing as ‘online’.
I’ll take modern digital technology any day over the good old days.

@Yutsano: Ugh. Please. I hope someone else falls in love with Jake and picks him before the Seahawks pick (who need linemen, linemen, linemen! before picking a “franchise” QB)(I’d take a chance on Lineart before drafting Locker).
@trollhattan: Undergrad alma mater was at Snodfart, and lurvs me the women’s basketball team–consistently good, and apparently the only ones who can come close to knocking off UConn the last few years. Like ’em better than the men’s team (who haven’t been too bad, but the women are just plain consistent).
asiangrrlMN
@burnspbesq: Yes, you may.
@Andy K: Ah! Cool. I like your bio over at C&L!
Yutsano
@gwangung: I’d just as soon we go the entire draft without even glancing at a QB, but I’m afeared Carroll is gonna want his own version of Tom Brady. I’m just glad we have a relatively hands off owner in Paul Allen. Otherwise things could get really obnoxious.
Plus Locker will be long gone before we get a choice. So yeah, getting a couple big bubbas on the O-line wouldn’t suck.
asiangrrlMN
@gwangung: Who’s Jake? I just think Jake the Snake, which does not put me in my happy place.
@Yutsano: Look at you talking about the draft! How cute!
gwangung
@asiangrrlMN: If you’re in Seattle, Jake is Jake Locker, the UW QB.
If you’re from Phoenix, Jake is Jake Plummer, the Arizona State QB who led them to their only Rose Bowl….
gwangung
@Yutsano: If Carrol gets his Brady in the 5th round or later, I’m OK…that line needs a lot more help (actually, I think the D-line could use a bit more help, too)…..
But, yay Stanford women!
asiangrrlMN
@gwangung: Locker–I thought his first name was Andy for some reason. And, yeah, I was thinking of Plummer. Still not in my happy place.
Yutsano
@gwangung: Half the time I feel like Trufant is the only safety out there. I could be exaggerating, but he seems to be the go to cover guy for whoever they think the ball will get thrown to. I’m thinking the O-line holes might be better filled with free agent vets or disgruntled trade targets. IIRC Seattle has quite a bit of cash to toss around before hitting the salary cap. I guess we’ll see soon enough what Carroll is really thinking as far as his vision goes. I’m just watching him closely for anything stupid or underhanded.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Damn. You really know your football. I have no clue what the Vikings need. Well, a little clue–but not much of one.

@Yutsano: I’m intrigued with Joe Webb, the kid who had a big game last week. I think a third QB is not a bad idea. Beef up both lines, yes. And, keeping Frazier as coach. That is all.
I am girding my loins to finish a testy piece at ABL’s piece. On race. It should be…interesting. I won’t finish it tonight, though.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Pace yourself. You’re not under a deadline, plus you just threw up a human interest piece that should tide over the masses until it’s finished. Plus you could always throw up a perspective on your Ratface governor. I know you could throw that together fast, plus it would give you space for the magnum opus.
Darkrose
@asiangrrlMN: Thank you! Mostly, it means that I’m a giant dork. The wife and I were talking about text tattoos, and what we’d get, and I jokingly suggested an interrobang. Then I realized that I kind of liked the idea.
I’m thinking about getting an asterisk on the other side.
BethanyAnne
@asiangrrlMN: What it *should* remind you of is Jake the Rake. :-D
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: You are right. I don’t have to rush it. And, I will do a post on Ratface Pawlenty, oh, you bet your ass I will. Thanks for the support and encouragement.
Your deep pockets areThat’s why I fake-married you.Oh, and this song must have been written about me!

@asiangrrlMN: :: pulls out checkbook ::
Oh, sorry, it’s kind of reflexive nowadays.
asiangrrlMN
@BethanyAnne: Fuuuuunny! I will have to bookmark that site.
@Darkrose: I like it! I think I would go for a colon, but that would probably just look like a bite mark. So, is your wife the one with the storyteller tat? That is some major inkage.
@Yutsano: Ha! You funny. You hitting the sheets soon? I think I’m outie. I luuuuuv you,

@Darkrose: what a diversion. I meant to say “that’s awesome” and tell you about a nifty text tattoo with a Galileo quote, but then I lost like 10 minutes looking up the quote and getting myself distracted…
ADD, w00t!
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Probably in a bit. Kind of winded since I got up early today. Tomorrow not so much.
Anne Laurie
@asiangrrlMN: Not that you asked me, but replace the roses with a nice garnet or ruby-colored brooch, set in gold. And when you’re tacking the sleeves on, change the neckline so it’s not straight across — even with a fiercely boned corset, any woman bigger than a AA cup is going to look either saggy or sausagey, or both.
I’d also change the waistline to match the new neckline (a dropped v-waist is always flattering). Or maybe go with a really wide, deep portrait collar and opera gloves, instead of sleeves?
Darkrose
@asiangrrlMN: No real plans; I expect I’ll be right here come 2011.
I don’t usually do resolutions, but this year I’m resolving to actually finish one of my epic fanfic pieces.
Yutsano
@Anne Laurie: Methinks we may have ourselves a seamstress for the wedding. Nothing too strenuous as we haven’t had wedding party discussions yet. It will come up I’m sure.
Anne Laurie
@Yutsano: As long as the seamstressing is as ‘conceptual’ as the wedding. I’m not so expert at the actual sewing part, but I can redesign / supervise like a mofo.
My real-life wedding dress was a sort-of-Dutch-Renaissance model, done by a theatrical costumer (part SCA, part professional opera). And the main fabric was a “tapestry” that looked very period & chic but was actually office-furniture boltends (Tivoli, clamshell pattern, tan for me & steel blue for the Spousal Unit). The Spousal Unit got a formal tunic with tied sleeves, plus handmade thigh-high rider’s boots and a Musketeer hat. We were quite pleased with the full effect.
Yutsano
@Anne Laurie: My SIL can sew like no one’s business, so I bet putting the two of you together could change the world of wedding fashion in ways it never knew it could be changed. Or something.

@John – A Motley Moose:
“Try finding good quality vinyl today.”
I can’t speak for other parts of the country, but here in SoCal it is not difficult at all to find good used vinyl.
burnspbesq
@burnspbesq:
And you can put together a good vinyl rig for less than the cost of a comparably good CD player.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: Not too difficult up this way either. There’s a big indie shop up on Queen Anne hill that sells just about damn near everything.
Lysana
Just for the record, I’m a woman who didn’t find John’s take on Christine O’Donnell to be sexist. The talk about bagging her, yes. The anti-male sexism by a certain BJer was barely worth mentioning except for its irony.
hamletta
@Anne Laurie: Oh, my. That’s obscene.
Can anyone move in a dress like that? It belongs on a toilet paper roll.
I love the concept of cascading fabrics, from satin to organza, but the way it’s folded and layered, it looks like it weighs a ton.
And can I say that you should either have sleeves or not have sleeves? A sleeveless dress with leg o’ mutton arm warmers is neither fish nor fowl.
Do love the color, though.
asiangrrlMN, I don’t know how you arrived at your flawless taste in men who are named Rickman, what with your criminal dress sense.
Anne Laurie
@Yutsano: Problem is, doing the wedding thing (which happened because my FIL really really wanted it, and was willing to pay to make it happen) convinced me that most modern American weddings are tacky because the people getting married want tacky. Thing may’ve improved over the last 17 years — although the concept of “Bridezilla” argues otherwise — but most American women (and, I’m afraid, gay men) form their idea of the Totally Perfect Wedding somewhere between the ages of 4 and 11, while playing with Barbies and/or participating in family weddings. Light-up, plastic-figure-decorated cakes that taste like Twinkies, dresses that look like Scarlett O’Hara got drunk and turned loose in a bathroom-decor factory, and (shudder) Disney World Magic Castle weddings aren’t popular because tradition or the nanny state imposes them on people… a startling number of our fellow citizens actually want kitsch-intensive celebrations because kitsch makes them happy… bless their hearts!
Tattoosydney
It’s almost 2011 here, so in case I am distracted – Happy new year to all!
hamletta
@Lysana: I didn’t either, honey.
There’s enough crappy sexism in the world out there that there ain’t no reason to go lookin’ for trouble under every turn of phrase.
And it was a shitty argument, which was destroyed without anybody having to whip out bona fides for Cole or TBogg.
Anne Laurie
@hamletta: __
Well, I wouldn’t want to run a marathon in it, but the skirt can’t be that heavy, because it’s not visibly dragging the bodice down. Elizabethan / Renaissance dresses cut like that were cut with separate skirts and bodices, because even with full fabric shoulders, you can’t support that much weight. On the other hand, the almost-this-complicated skirt on my wedding dress was made of tapestry fabric (5 yards of 60″ material), and with the support of a ‘bum roll’ (a bolster-shaped pillow tied loosely just below my waist) it was quite comfortable to move around in.

not being religious and all, i don’t have that many rules that i follow as a personal sort of equivalent to those imposed by religious doctrine.
one of them is this.
never bet on clemson.
as to whether or not you root for them, i would have to say its something akin to eating bacon flavored potato chips, when you don’t eat pork.

@Anne Laurie #133: For a moment there, I thought your Spousal Unit had worn a Mouseketeer hat at the wedding.

I personally wouldn’t project him to be anything more than another Seneca Wallace. I’m not necessarily pimping for Locker either, just pointing out that the temptation could be there for the Seahawks, who will need a quarterback (amongst other things).
asiangrrlMN
Great. You guys whoop it up AFTER I leave, planning my fake-wedding for me!
@hamletta: What can I say? I was looking for something with sleeves and soft layers in black and/or red and not TOO garnished with frou-frou frills and shit. That’s the closest I could find.
@Anne Laurie: You’re hired! You and Yutsy’s SIL will get that dress did. Except, silver, not gold. All kidding aside, my fake-wedding would be pretty simple. Less than fifty people for sure. I am NOT a traditional wedding kind of gal (if you haven’t guessed by now).
@Tattoosydney: Gee, why would you be distracted? Happy NY to you. Be safe, hon.
