Missed all the festivities today. Did Boehner cry? Did they read the Constitution? Is our Republican now saved thanks to the ascension of our teahadist overlords? Are they going to allow Obama to continue as President? Did Issa roll out any indictments yet?

We’re all saved! Now that the “adults” are back in charge. Dontchyaknow?

I thought you meant Snookie.

Boner cried. The constitution was read. Now they’re fighting over paygo vs. cutgo. Republicans cut out the symbolic votes of Guam/Virgin Islands/etc in the committee of the Whole (new term for me), completely a symbolic move, but kinda mean.
I have noticed though, if I listen to both CSpan AND the Tron:Legacy soundtrack at the same time makes the CSpan a lot more exciting and epic.
Also, I enjoy the old person rants when they allow the call-ins. All old cranky people!
Mike Kay (Chief of Staff)
meh, they’re on watchable. if they were cast in a film, they would be box office poison.
and that’s thier problem: they’re so colorless and boring, that only a circus freak like Palin gets attention
Brian S (formerly Incertus)
A serious question for everyone here. When the bills start rolling out fast and furious, most of which will never become laws, where can I access the parts of them where they explain how the bill is Constitutional? I’m thinking I might have found my avant garde language project for the coming year.
Davis X. Machina
Way to dishonor the memory of Rusty Staub….

Eleven BlueWhores voted for Schuler, though it doesn’t matter all that much.
Yutsano
Yup. Nancy SMASH made him too.
Still going on from what I understand. Apparently they’re letting it sink in.
Depends. Are you in the top 1% of all income earners in the US? If so yes. Otherwise you’re ungestuppt.
:: snicker ::
Not until all the cameras are focused on him. Attention whores gotta have attention you know.

Democrats should demand that all investigations be paid for by staff cuts and wage reductions from Congress.
Perhaps they can start an investigation cost clock.

@Brian S (formerly Incertus): Try this link:

It’s the Library of Congress’s bill search page.

I was kinda hoping Nancy would beat Boehner with that big fucking gavel in one hand and a Communist Manifesto in the other. Or a Big Book. Either works.

of course, I doubt they will offer any constitutional actual analysis. at most, they’ll say, “this is constitutional, because it’s constitutional”.
Brian S (formerly Incertus)
@Mike Kay (Chief of Staff): Given what I plan to do with it, that’s my best case scenario. About when can I expect to be able to access stuff from the current Congress, do you think?

@Mike Kay (Chief of Staff): It’s either that or the “It’s Constitutional BECAUSE SHUT UP!”
I think they should create a new post. Some guy has to dress up as the bill from Schoolhouse Rock and yell either “It’s CONSTITUTIONAL!” OR “NOT CONSTITUTIONAL!!!” with an Optional “ARTICLE X BASED!!!”
I think this would bring a level of discourse and decorum that is missing from the House.

Congressional Dems have a high opinion of themselves and they don’t believe in “lowering” themselves by engaging in public relations.

Meh. I watched long enough to see my congresscritter, Jason Altmire D-UPMC Health Plan, vote against my hero for House Minority Leader. Wish I had that big gavel to hit him in the head with, repeatedly.
On a more alarming note, did you know that CPAC is being taken over by Islamic extremists, led by Grover Norquist, who plan to institute Sharia law? And, no, this isn’t snark.

Since I can’t edit my earlier comment, I was incorrect, the Constitution has not been read. That’s scheduled for tomorrow morning.
I hope the readers wear tri-corner hats.

Someone needs to start a blog from the point of view of Boehner’s tear ducts. Must be damned hard work being them.

@Mike Kay (Chief of Staff): I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with it, but I can guarantee you that the wolves would have been out if Pelosi had looked even choked up on the day she took over.

Do Democrats / liberals actually have a strategy to take back the House in 2012?
Sure doesn’t look like it right now.
That’s the more important question, IMO.

Best news I’ve seen at the start of the 112th Congress is Bachmann may run for ‘12 president. Be still my heart. She brings far more to the comedy table than Palin. Palin can sell stupid with the best of them, and has made a lot of money doing it, but she’s just plain dull and dumb compared to that honest crazy loon factor that is Bachmann.

How sweet would it be to see The Orange cry and hand the Gavel back to Nancy?

@Martin:
Seriously. I mean, how can anyone take people like this seriously? They need institutionalization, not with their hands on the rudder of the ship of state. Gaffney is clearly insane, but he’ll be on Tweety’s show or some such and be taken seriously. I never thought I’d live to see the US succumb to collective insanity, but here we are. Don’t quite know what to do about that.

Has anyone here ever made note of the fact that Le Grande Orange was the nickname of Rusty Staub when he played for the Montreal Expos. I fondly remember his debut for the Astros (or was it the Colt .45’s?) where as an 18 year old first baseman he totally missed two throws from the pitcher to keep a runner close.

@Tsulagi: Bachmann/Alan West ticket in ’12.
Come on Jeebus, we need this.

Looks like Gibbs is leaving the WH for the private sector sometime in February.

I wonder which one of the Republicans will get to read the bits about how slaves are counted as 3/5 of a person? Who gets stuck with that (assuming there’s no one fighting for the privilege)?

Anyone who doesn’t think this country isn’t screwed up just has to look at a guy like Issa who was arrested twice on car theft, had gun charges and a business burn down right after being heftily insured with no convictions and now is a legislator with the power to investigate and bring charges on any stupid thing he can make stick.

For two years I have bit my tongue, using the correct pronunciation of Boehner, even thought I know that if a (D) had that name, the other side would not show that respect. Well, screw that. Starting today, it’s Orange Boner for me, even in public. The man is not worthy of one bit of respect. It’s so scary that he is third in line. God help us all.

Now that the wingnuts in Congress are responsible for something, it is going to be a hoot watching them get real, when those that brung them to the dance feel jilted. Already seeing it on the 50 bil cave on cutting discretionary spending next year. The tea tard pitchforks take no prisoners.
Mike Kay (Chief of Staff)
@Sweet Fanny Adams: actually he’ll be heading up an independent 538 group for the 2012 election.

I had a comment get eaten on another thread.
I have a comment awaiting moderation on this thread.
Boner’s boner is all teh qualification he needs to be Prez…a most important qualification Nancy just doesn’t have…nuff said…
Suck It Up!
I can see the documentary now (title to be announced):
the doc would show all the excitement, the festivities, the interviews, the giddy msm, boehner laughing with the gavel in hand and then the narrator says, “…………newly elected speaker john boehner, now happy and smiling, will come to see today as the first day of his two year long nightmare. He and the Republicans never saw it coming.” Then the doc would turn to black and white images while depressing music plays in the background.

@PeakVT:
In defense of Shuler, no one more liberal will be elected from NC-11.
It’s like Delaware Republicans lamenting Mike Castle (R-DE), because he’s not Sarah Palin. Sure it made Republicans feel better by defeating him in a primary with there Palin-wannabe, but it cost them a sure shot Senate seat.
Until we turn the electorate in NC-11 into wanting liberal policies, please quit whining about the Shuler’s of the world.
The Blue Dogs said they’d get their asses handed to them, because of trying to push through big sweeping reforms and lo and behold, they got their asses handed to them.
I can’t blame them for being pissed off with the rest of the Democratic leadership, from that point of view.
Brian S (formerly Incertus)
@gene108: If they’d done a better job of selling the plan to their constituents directly, then they might not have taken the beating they did. Voting for reforms didn’t have to be a death sentence.

@Davis X. Machina:
Not to mention the French language. It’s “le Grand Orange”, without the (feminine) -e.
What a hitter. I will always remember a game late in Staub’s career when he was with the Mets, and due to a lack of available position players in extra innings, he was called upon to play the outfield (at this point in his career he was almost exclusively a pinch hitter). As I recall, he had only one chance and he made the play, but it was an adventure. It was sort of the baseball equivalent of Dan Connolly’s kickoff return for the Patriots a few weeks back.
Calouste
@Brian S (formerly Incertus):
They’ll be queuing up for that. The more interesting question is who will read Article Six. That has both the “treaties are the supreme law of the land” and “no religious test” parts.

Bruuuuce
@ricky: Yep. See Davis X. Machina at #6.

For me, I was hoping that the post title meant we were going to have arguments over who SHOULD have made the MLB HoF (for me, I think Barry Larkin, Alan Trammell, and Tim Raines wuz robbed). But a good snark on the Oompa-Loompa is always welcome.

@gene108: As has been pointed out before: it’s not that Schuler is conservative, it’s that he undermines the Democratic Party by campaigning so visibly against it. He can be as conservative as he wants to be, but it would be helpful if he STFU about how bad he thinks the Democratic Party is.
Uloborus
@Brian S (formerly Incertus):
They’re specifically not reading that part. Apparently they ducked it by claiming that the 13th invalidated it. Not only are they the party of racism, they’re the party of racists who are starting to realize the white hoods are not a secret sign anymore.
@Calouste:
Apparently they invited Democrats to take part. I suspect there will be a certain gusto taken in loudly and slowly reading out parts like the 14th amendment. Actually, MOST of the Constitution is on our side, so…
Yutsano
@joel hanes: Thanks. Yiddish transliterations tend to never end well. :)

Boehner cried. I must admit that Ezra gave a good description of his speech. Then they debated the new rules package. Democrats focused their remarks on CUTGO for the most part and not allowing the delegates to vote on the floor, and Rahall talked about the provision for the highway fund. Republicans focused their remarks on transparency for the most part. Dreier is a fairly good speaker. They will read the Constitution tomorrow.
4jkb4ia
@Brian S (formerly Incertus):
In the Goodlatte video that ABL had us watch he assured us all that the parts that have been changed by amendment will not be read. So I assume that anything that was only in there as a euphemism for slavery will not be read.
I want to know who gets stuck with reading the income tax amendment and whether its relative, “No capitation or direct tax shall be laid, unless in proportion to the census or enumeration hereinbefore directed to be taken” will be read. (Art. 1, Sec. 9)
And the rules package is up at rules.house.gov for John to read.

@noncarborundum: 1973 World Series. He’d injured his throwing shoulder in the NLCS and the A’s knew it. Anything hit to right field was automatically two bases.
ChrisB
Do not refer to Boehner as Le Grand Orange ever again.
I grew up two blocks away from Rusty Staub’s restaurant on 73rd and 3rd and my family had way too much affection for him for you to refer to Boehner by that nickname.
ChrisB
@redoubt: Staub hit .423 in that World Series. And who else was going to play out there, Dave Schneck? The Stork, George Theodore?
What fun remembering those names.
