Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

The willow is too close to the house.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

This song popped into my head for some unknown reason today, which reminded me of some advice from Stephen Colbert. The best way to get a song out of your head is to sing “By Mennen”. Discuss trivia like this, or more weighty matters, in this open thread.

The USSC has become a joke. Not even trying to hide their partisanship anymore.

So what I call the “Michael Jackson effect” is working again. If you look at the iTunes top-selling singles/albums, when someone dies, his/her albums/songs shoot up in the iTunes sales rankings. I call it the Michael Jackson effect because after he died, his records/songs absolutely dominated iTunes for weeks afterward.

When Ronnie James Dio died, “Holy Diver” shot up in the rankings. When Teena Marie died, her music shot up in the rankings. And sure enough, this morning, “City to City” by Gerry Rafferty is at #18 on iTunes.

The surest way to get rid of an earworm is to hum “The Girl from Ipanema”. But whatever you do, for God’s sake don’t sing the lyrics, because there’s nothing that can remove that!

my goto earworm eradicator is “Waltz #2”, by Elliott Smith. i used it last week to cure a bad case of Erykah Badu’s “Turn Me Away”. being a strong earworm itself, however, requires that i use it only in extreme situations. it’s like morphine: kills the pain, but highly addictive.

    Hoocoodanode:

Many people knowledgeable about the federal budget said House Republicans could not keep their campaign promise to cut $100 billion from domestic spending in a single year. Now it appears that Republicans agree.

Wow. Didn’t see that one coming …

Just heard a piece on NPR about Florida International University’s College of Medicine’s “adopt-a-family” program. This quote struck me:

“What we’ve become is a nation of interventionalists. If you’re dying, I’ll save you. But, it’s sort of like in America, we won’t let you die, but we’ll let you suffer. So how do we get beyond that?”

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Private sector payrolls soared 297,000 in December, payroll processor ADP announced Wednesday.

That’s a positive sign for the economy, with the government’s highly-anticipated monthly unemployment report due Friday.

Is Christie still a darling of the teatards? Because I wonder how they feel about this:

    http://www.northjersey.com/news/112791044_N_J__pressing_fight_to_seize_gift_card_funds.html

First, how would this even work, considering gift cards can be bought and given to people outside of NJ?

Second, between this and Christie refusing to give back the stimulus grant for a project he canceled, does Christie even understand how government works? I know the state is close to broke and raising taxes is akin to murdering adorable white babies for Republicans, but he doesn’t seem to realize that he can’t just go around abritraliy siezing money from people. There has to be legislation defining it, valid jursdiction, and it’s called “raising taxes.”

Also, fat joke too as well.

I just saw the Hold Steady last week in Milwaukee for New Year’s Eve. They put on quite a show that was easily the best I’ve seen recently. BJers should totally check them out if they play a concert near you.
