A Bit of Good News on This Awful Day
Remember the dog I rescued from death row last month? Well, he found his forever home1 today. (And I found my sanity.)
A woman and her 12 year old son came by to pick him up. The boy fell in love with the dog and Ollie looked happy as a clam.
As for me? Peace and quiet, FTW.
1 Technically, it’s just a trial period (the woman’s husband is still on the fence) but she and I agreed that her son would likely disown his father if, after two weeks, his father decides to send Ollie back to me.
Yutsano
You gave up the sweet puppeh? AWWWW! (Though I knew it was only temporary and I anticipate a liberal visitation schedule. :)

Aw, I’m so glad to know that Mittens has found his forever home. He’s a good puppy, he is. Thanks for the smile, ABL.
Mnemosyne
I don’t know why, but seeing a doggie go into a play bow makes me squee every. single. time. I see it.
That’s what I needed to see so I could sleep tonight (which I should be doing right now). Thank you!
Yutsano
@Mnemosyne: Jack the border collie is doing this constantly. He will crouch down and wag and wag and wag and wait for you to react. And if you don’t, you get barked at. He’s a total sweetheart, but he got the extra dose of the “PLAY NAOW!!” gene.

Thanks for the “Ollie” clip, and your great heart, ABL. Speaking strictly for myself, I sure needed something uplifting. Thx again.

Thank you, thank you so much. Needed a bit more brightness today. And what an adorable dog Ollie is!

Thanks for posting that.
If we lived ANYWHERE near you, Ollie would be sleeping on our bed tonight.

@Yutsano: I thought it looked like muskrat love.

Ugh. We’re the 70s really that unbearably treacly?
No, don’t answer that. I watched “The Captain and Tenniel” every week, when it was on.

Like many of you hear, I’ve spent a lot of today just processing this horror. Reading and searching and finding the shooter’s Youtube within mere seconds of having heard his name, thinking about using my skillset to do something. Then sharing in the grief, joy, analysis of what this means even though the effects it will have on families is shattering, and ultimately the conclusion is that it is completely purposeless.
TPM linked to an article just now, illustrating the heroism shown by one of Giffords’ interns.
I don’t know what it is, but something in that article caused the dam to burst. I’m now a wet, sobbing mess. Maybe it was the selflessness of the heroism of this ordinary, yet simultaneously extraordinary man. Maybe it’s disparate nature of what two men in their early twenties did today, one gave in to his inner chaos, and the other kept fear at bay to save lives. I don’t know. But there should be statues erected for “regular” people like Daniel Hernandez, and as for this shooter, his name, his life, his online footprint should be erased from existence.

@freelancer: I have been crying of and on. And then to find out this morning that Christina-Taylor Green was Dallas Green’s granddaughter.
God what an awful fucking mess. Every time I think of that little girl, the dam bursts again.

ABL thanks for the post.
@freelancer: After a few hours of fitful sleep, I’m like you and had to reach for the tissues.

I’ve been reading today but not commenting because I really don’t know what to say.
To all of my American friends, my sympathy and my love.

An individual targets a congresswoman who is a politician and some complain that the left is trying to politicize this senseless act. I’m not even sure what that means.
The senseless murder of six individuals is heartbreaking and my thoughts are with all the family members. The death of the nine year old girl sickens me and I can’t imagine the grief her family is feeling.

@freelancer:
Lovely story about Daniel Hernandez.
Holding Gabby up so she wouldn’t drown on her own blood was a very good idea, carried out during a chaotic moment.
If Mr. Hernandez has that good a head on his shoulders, maybe we could find a place for him in public service. The country could use clear thinkers like that.
Good job, Danny!

Thanks, Sweetie. It’s good to know we have friends while we grapple with monstrous event, flailing around awkwardly like we usually do.

Every dog should have someone who falls in love with him like that.
As for this terrible Arizona incident; I hope it does get dissected properly, for both the mourners and survivors. And everyone else.

An Angry Black Lady with a heart of gold.
It takes a special person to foster dogs, and you’re just as special as those who adopt, perhaps even more so, taking a complete unknown into your home and disrupting the daily routine for woman and animals alike. And then investing your heart into these needy souls and watching them go to a forever home and out of your safe embrace.
I am an adopter, not a foster mom, I’d end up keeping them all.
Thank you for a nice story after the tragedy and anger yesterday.

Yesterday it was almost impossible to get through to takebackthe20.com, but it seemed to be because of traffic. It was up and down, but I did manage to get through.
This morning dns doesn’t resolve it. In other words, it’s been scrubbed in the most thorough way. The whole server is gone.
Luci
Yes! Thank you ABL for the lovely and heartwarming story after all that went on yesterday. I am heartsick and sad too, and I hope that some of the awful rhetoric we’ve had recently begins to abate. The shooting yesterday was horrible, and while the price is too high, I hope something positive comes from it. My sympathies are with everyone who suffered so much and lost so much.
Southern Beale
Apparently Fox News is reporting Loughner was connected to American Renaissance, a right-wing, anti-Semitic, racist wackadoodle group connected to the Tea Party through the John Birch Society.
I suggest folks take a look at their website and capture some screen shots before the inevitable scrubbing begins.

Palin’s rush to tweet about how sorry she was was classic damage control. She’s obviously worried this will come back and bite her in the ass.

ABL: that’s a great story and video. You’ve a generous heart.
How are your parents doing? (It may be early to ask this from NYC but I imagine they and you had a bad night.)
Skepticat
Thanks, a little good news is certainly needed. I’m very happy for Ollie–especially as the woman’s husband will have to deal with all of us if he tries to send Ollie back!
alwhite
Thanks for the happy story – we need a few today.
My favorite bit of silliness comes from the RNC in its search for a new chairman. They asked the candidates “Whats your favorite book?”
Now, you just know there must have been a mess of “The Bible”, Desiderin’ points” and the gospel of St. Ronnie. but there were 2 GREAT answers:
“My kitchen table”, from Ann Wagner who misheard the question & thought it was ‘favorite bar’! The fact she was not the first to answer indicates she was paying as much attention to this fools parade as it deserved.
But the best was Mikey Steele.
“War and Peace” (now you know that is bullshit W&P is NOBODIES favorite book, not even Tolstoy’s) but it gets better! he then added “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This man is built to lead the RNC!
Dog is My Co-Pilot
Bless you, ABL, for rescuing this pup.

Ditto from this Canadian.
Please note: If I weren’t already signed in I would have changed my screen name because of these sad events.
My deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
