Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

A Bit of Good News on This Awful Day

Remember the dog I rescued from death row last month? Well, he found his forever home1 today. (And I found my sanity.)

A woman and her 12 year old son came by to pick him up. The boy fell in love with the dog and Ollie looked happy as a clam.

As for me? Peace and quiet, FTW.

The Matrix: Re-dogged

1 Technically, it’s just a trial period (the woman’s husband is still on the fence) but she and I agreed that her son would likely disown his father if, after two weeks, his father decides to send Ollie back to me.

You gave up the sweet puppeh? AWWWW! (Though I knew it was only temporary and I anticipate a liberal visitation schedule. :)

I don’t know why, but seeing a doggie go into a play bow makes me squee every. single. time. I see it.

That’s what I needed to see so I could sleep tonight (which I should be doing right now). Thank you!

@Mnemosyne: Jack the border collie is doing this constantly. He will crouch down and wag and wag and wag and wait for you to react. And if you don’t, you get barked at. He’s a total sweetheart, but he got the extra dose of the “PLAY NAOW!!” gene.

Like many of you hear, I’ve spent a lot of today just processing this horror. Reading and searching and finding the shooter’s Youtube within mere seconds of having heard his name, thinking about using my skillset to do something. Then sharing in the grief, joy, analysis of what this means even though the effects it will have on families is shattering, and ultimately the conclusion is that it is completely purposeless.

TPM linked to an article just now, illustrating the heroism shown by one of Giffords’ interns.

Daniel Hernandez had been U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ intern for five days when she was shot Saturday outside Tucson.
    __
The junior at the University of Arizona was helping check people in at the “Congress on Your Corner” event when he heard gunfire. He was about 30 feet from the congresswoman. When the shots began, he ran toward them.
    __
“I don’t even know if the gunfire had stopped,” he said Saturday night as he kept a vigil at the University Medical Center cafeteria, gathered near a TV watching tributes and getting updates.
    __
When the shots began that morning, he saw many people lying on the ground, including a young girl. Some were bleeding. Hernandez said he moved from person to person checking pulses.
    __
“First the neck, then the wrist,” he said. One man was already dead. Then he saw Giffords. She had fallen and was lying contorted on the sidewalk. She was bleeding.
    __
Using his hand, Hernandez applied pressure to the entry wound on her forehead. He pulled her into his lap, holding her upright against him so she wouldn’t choke on her own blood. Giffords was conscious, but quiet.
    __
Ron Barber, Giffords’ district director, was next to her. Hernandez told a bystander how to apply pressure to one of Barber’s wounds.
    __
Barber told Hernandez, “Make sure you stay with Gabby. Make sure you help Gabby.”
    __
Hernandez used his hand to apply pressure until someone from inside Safeway brought him clean smocks from the meat department. He used them to apply pressure on the entrance wound, unaware there was an exit wound. He never let go of her.
    __
He stayed with Giffords until paramedics arrived. They strapped her to a board and loaded her into an ambulance. Hernandez climbed in with her. On the ride to the hospital, he held her hand. She squeezed his back…

I don’t know what it is, but something in that article caused the dam to burst. I’m now a wet, sobbing mess. Maybe it was the selflessness of the heroism of this ordinary, yet simultaneously extraordinary man. Maybe it’s disparate nature of what two men in their early twenties did today, one gave in to his inner chaos, and the other kept fear at bay to save lives. I don’t know. But there should be statues erected for “regular” people like Daniel Hernandez, and as for this shooter, his name, his life, his online footprint should be erased from existence.

An individual targets a congresswoman who is a politician and some complain that the left is trying to politicize this senseless act. I’m not even sure what that means.
The senseless murder of six individuals is heartbreaking and my thoughts are with all the family members. The death of the nine year old girl sickens me and I can’t imagine the grief her family is feeling.

    @freelancer:
    Lovely story about Daniel Hernandez.

Holding Gabby up so she wouldn’t drown on her own blood was a very good idea, carried out during a chaotic moment.

If Mr. Hernandez has that good a head on his shoulders, maybe we could find a place for him in public service. The country could use clear thinkers like that.

    Good job, Danny!

An Angry Black Lady with a heart of gold.
It takes a special person to foster dogs, and you’re just as special as those who adopt, perhaps even more so, taking a complete unknown into your home and disrupting the daily routine for woman and animals alike. And then investing your heart into these needy souls and watching them go to a forever home and out of your safe embrace.
I am an adopter, not a foster mom, I’d end up keeping them all.
Thank you for a nice story after the tragedy and anger yesterday.

Yesterday it was almost impossible to get through to takebackthe20.com, but it seemed to be because of traffic. It was up and down, but I did manage to get through.

Yes! Thank you ABL for the lovely and heartwarming story after all that went on yesterday. I am heartsick and sad too, and I hope that some of the awful rhetoric we’ve had recently begins to abate. The shooting yesterday was horrible, and while the price is too high, I hope something positive comes from it. My sympathies are with everyone who suffered so much and lost so much.

Apparently Fox News is reporting Loughner was connected to American Renaissance, a right-wing, anti-Semitic, racist wackadoodle group connected to the Tea Party through the John Birch Society.

I suggest folks take a look at their website and capture some screen shots before the inevitable scrubbing begins.

Thanks for the happy story – we need a few today.

My favorite bit of silliness comes from the RNC in its search for a new chairman. They asked the candidates “Whats your favorite book?”

Now, you just know there must have been a mess of “The Bible”, Desiderin’ points” and the gospel of St. Ronnie. but there were 2 GREAT answers:
“My kitchen table”, from Ann Wagner who misheard the question & thought it was ‘favorite bar’! The fact she was not the first to answer indicates she was paying as much attention to this fools parade as it deserved.

But the best was Mikey Steele.
“War and Peace” (now you know that is bullshit W&P is NOBODIES favorite book, not even Tolstoy’s) but it gets better! he then added “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This man is built to lead the RNC!
