I do not LITERALLY want to see a catastrophic, career-ending injury on Nick Fairley of Auburn. I did wish such a thing out loud to my wife last night – a number of times, in fact, in a number of fairly grotesquely detailed scenarios – but I did not really mean it. It was just rhetorical hyperbole. I just want to make this clear to everyone.

Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city, braced for its worst flooding in 35 years on Tuesday as floodwaters racing toward the eastern coastal city of two million people claimed at least 10 lives. Officials urged residents to flee to higher ground.
__
Five children were among the dead as the deluge tore through Toowoomba and other parts of the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane, late Monday, upending cars and ripping buildings from their foundations.
__
Some 78 people were still missing late Tuesday, and the police warned that they had “very grave fears” for 18 of those missing. At least 20 people have been killed in the floodwaters that have swept vast areas of Australia’s northeastern Queensland State since November. Brisbane is the state’s capital.
__
After enduring a decade of one of the worst droughts in Australian history, Queensland residents are now facing billions of dollars in costs from the floods, which have razed hundreds of homes and businesses over the past several weeks.
__
The disaster has also brought the region’s lucrative coal and agricultural industries to a virtual standstill. Queensland produces roughly one-third of the world’s supply of coking coal, used in the production of steel. Industry analysts say global prices of coking coal and thermal coal, used to supply power plants, are sure to rise because of the flooding in Queensland.

The state of GA decided that cutting DOT was a good idea. Truckers have been stranded on our highways in the Atlanta area for days. There was a trucker interviewed who was stuck and his $60,000 shipment of cattle hadn’t been fed in two days. Before long folks might release their lack of spending causes real damage… nah… The mayor of Atlanta mentioned in a news conference that most of the cities level one and level two roads have been clean but unfortunately the state owned stretches hadn’t been touched. Many of you have probably heard of Peachtree St.. well that’s state owned and has been highlighted all over the national media. The mayor said he was not placing blame just mentioning. hahaha The mayor of Atlanta is a democrat.

California’s landmark Paid Family Leave program didn’t amount to be the costly “job-killer” businesses initially feared and has resulted in significant economic, social and health benefits for both male and female workers, economic and labor researchers found in a study released today.
Will we learn from this? Most certainly we will not.

Apple had to create a new version of the iPhone 4 for Verizon because its network uses a technology known as CDMA, as opposed to the GSM technology used in all existing iPhones.
__
As with other CDMA phones, the iPhone 4 on Verizon will not let users make calls and surf the Web simultaneously. But Mr. Cook said he did not think users would mind. “I think people place emphasis on different things,” he said.
__
Mr. Cook said the phone would operate on the company’s older, third-generation wireless network rather than its new 4G LTE network. Making the phone run on LTE would have “forced design changes we wouldn’t make,” he said. “And Verizon customers told us they want the iPhone now.”

Who wants glassless 3D TV more, dogs or cats?
I’m just not getting this whole 3D rage. Sure, I went to see Avatar in 3D. It was the whole novelty thing, and I enjoyed it. But by the end of that movie I had had my fill of 3D and it was getting tedious.
I have no interest in seeing another bit of 3D content as long as I live. It isn’t the spawn of the devil … it is just dull after the first 10 minutes, and a bit annoying. Don’t get me started on the whole 3D surcharge at the theatres though…
In any case … why would anyone want that (beglassed, or glass-free) in their house?
Back on to the original question: My guess is cats. Dogs probably think that the glasses make them look cool.

Neither are a lot of consumers. On the other hand, at the CES show, not only were 3D TVs a big deal, but apparently there were even some 3D laptops. And there might be some interesting things done with gaming, especially when combined with things like Microsoft’s Kinect.
The glass-less TV uses an LCD shutter and lens added to the tradition LCD. Moving the shutter and magnifying with a lens, it shoots out 3D-like visuals to the viewer. Japanese TV manufacturers have admitted defeat to Korean manufacturers, and Toshiba has changed its strategy to ultra-highend products. The nine-channel, all-knowing, all-seeing and recording monster TV, Cell Regza, was quite successful even when priced at US$10,000.

Okay, I’ve been sick with flu for the past 5 days. During that time, I watched a lot of Lifetime (damn if they don’t seriously make some addictive movies. You catch a glimpse while channel surfing, and pause for a sec, and somehow get sucked it to watchin Tori Spelling in “Mother May I Sleep With Danger).
So after almost a week of Lifetime, I started asking silly questions of my friends.
how many if ya’ll have ever been set-up on a blind date? How did it go?
have u ever been on a date with someone a friend set you up with & thought why the heck would they set you up with this idiot?
would it be in bad taste to date ur ex-BF friends? Is it better if it’s been a long time since u and the ex broke-up? Or is it never ok?
Is is against the friend code to buy expensive gifts for your BFF current girl/boy or even for your BFF ex-boy/girl? I say it’s weird either way!

@alwhite: Those comments are awesome! Always nice to see a Star Wars reference on a food website. The good Star Wars too, not the lame, new Star Wars. Are there any reference-worthy quotes from the new SW? I don’t think so. Only references to the stupid lines, which are abundant…
I had a cat once that loved fermented black beans and lived to fetch the big thick rubber bands from stalks of broccoli. Her other favorite pastime was to climb to the top of the interior door frames and fling herself off into space across the room.
As to how Dr. Rhee ended up in Tucson… it’s a nice place to live if you’re rich. And the UMC is a really good hospital. For a while, it was the only Level I trauma center in southern AZ. It’s also a big military town.
@lamh32: Give up the fairytale immediately. It doesn’t usually happen that way in real life. Go out. Do things you enjoy. Meet people. Mundane? Yes. But, more likely to get results in the long run than waiting for ‘the one’ (in which I don’t believe. By the way, that’s advice I need to give myself, too. The getting out and meeting people part. I am not good at that).

Well, me, my ex and the cat liked them. Used them in Chinese dishes and got them in the “oriental section” of a regular old shitty grocery story in a little tiny town in Tennessee in the 80s and in NC in the early 90s.
They have sort of a tangy, nutty flavor to dishes. Gives an interesting texture to dishes as well. I haven’t used them in years, though.
Dalek (not a real robot I know, but close enough) vs. Data vs. Cylon vs. R2.
I’ll assume one each, with Cylons represented by a Toaster — the humanoid variant wouldn’t stand a chance.
Dalek’s are wiped out first. Individually, they’re not that strong.
Cylon’s are next. Data & R2, being the types that can negotiate and co-exist peacefully, join together to beat the Cylon.
Final result: tie, because Data & R2 refuse to fight each other as part of the pact they made to take on the Cylon.

@Ripley: Too soon to tell regarding actual USB 3.0 throughput. This is going to be used as a backup drive. I am transferring 270 GB of data from my old 300 GB USB 2.0 drive to the new drive, so I am limited by the old drive speed right now.
My new server has 2 2TB SATA 6.0 Gbps drives (the new standard) in a RAID 1, so I am hoping to greatly reduce the backup window. I won’t know about the speed until Friday when I compare time stamps from the backups.

@Ripley: Super lame regarding the USB 3.0 drive. Well, it’s not the drive’s fault, but:
I am using it on VMWare server 2.0.2. Apparently, it supports USB 2.0, but not USB 3.0. I’m running Windows 7 x64 as the host OS, with VMWare server on top. The host OS sees the drive fine, and recognizes that it is a USB 3.0 drive. VMWare server does nothing when I check the box to pass it through to my Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. It goes through the motions, but the box will not remain checked, and it never shows up in the guest OS.
Some research shows that VMWare server 2.0.2 supports USB 2.0 devices, with no mention of USB 3.0. It could also be a driver or some other limitation on my Server 2003 VM. If I plug the drive into a USB 2.0 port on the host, and pass it through to the VM, it works fine. So I guess I can be happy with the increased space, and the fact that the drive was free, but i doubt I will see any performance gain. :-(
Oh, and I tried leaving it on the host OS only, and sharing it over the network. The mechanics worked, but transferring data between VM’s in this manner was horribly slow, so I had to ditch that idea.

“As a head coach Brady Hoke had one good season at Ball State after 5 losing seasons, and ran to SD ST where he had one OK Yr. out of 2 (at a JUCO level). Huh?”
Time To Cheer for Texas my other alma mater. They won’t stay in the tank long.

How are the PETS, Cole?

I just read something shocking.
Dave Wannstedt is in demand for an NFL coaching job.
I would have though his 82-87 record would be a big enough sample size to show the man can’t coach for shite.

Maybe in football futility. Overall? You wish. When you’ve won 12 national championships in five different sports, we’ll talk. You’re currently eight spots behind us in the Director’s Cup standings, and you’re not going to make up any ground in the winter or spring.
I was in Cameron the last time Duke and Michigan played. The Michigan players did a little dance on the Duke logo during introductions. A certain Duke player from Detroit Country Day didn’t approve. It was 34-2 after 10 minutes.

Anyone else’s formatting buttons on comments suddenly disappear?
Firefox 3.6.13.
Been poking around with Collada/WebGL in the Firefox 4 beta, so I probably did this to myself, but wanted to see if anyone else is getting this too.

@burnspbesq, then again there is that football Duke, ouch!
BBall wolverines took #3 Kansas to overtime Saturday. The BBall team is on the upswing, so don’t speak too soon. Next year should be a good one.
Maybe we can trade football for a woman’s sport to comply with title 9.

@Anonymous At Work:
Yeah but did it have to be Auburn?? I stayed up way too late watching the game, but ended up getting an unexpected nap this afternoon thanks to a sick kid that needed to be picked up from school.

@Blogreeder:
LOL. Never thought of that, but they did claim to be fermented on the label. I never remember checking the date on them, though.
I remember now that they were really salty as well, so maybe that was what the cat liked about them. At any rate, like most store-bought, massed produced Chinese condiments, they probably had so much MSG in them that they were incapable of supporting microbial growth.

@lamh32: I had a blind date once in college that may have been the best date of my life. When it came up I begged off, but my friend told me his girlfriend had gone through the lookbook with her friend (the blind date), described the guys to her, and she picked me. So I figured what the hell.
Boy did we hit it off, laughing, talking, coming up with private jokes the others couldn’t figure out. Couldn’t keep our hands off each other, either.
She flew back to the east coast, I wrote maybe a dozen letters, never got a response, never saw her again.
Good date, though. Do it.

@funluvn:
Well, duh. I’m for love. Don’t you want to be?
Ben
@Lolis:
I second the Ben’s Chili Bowl rec. If you want to splurge on a bar go check out the Round Robin at the Willard Hotel–a lot of DC power brokers hang out there, and they make a mint julep that’s well worth the $15 it costs. Otherwise, my favorite bar in DC is the Hawk and Dove on Pennsylvania Ave SE.

@MikeJ:
I agree Local 16 is a nice spot. A bit more expensive but extremely good in DC is Founding Farmers on Pennsylvania. Food is to die for! Good neighborhoods to roam — Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan.

Here in Seattle the news was bracing us for a “significant accumulation” of snow. That’s anything greater than a quarter inch around here. So far, the news is wrong….no snow.
The news is also bracing us for a Seahawks win. On this point they will not be wrong. Love me some Pete C.!
