Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

This really is a full service blog.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

I’d rather the Packers win, because I want the chance of Seattle hosting the championship game. I won’t go as far as “rooting” for them, however – I can’t revoke my Lions fan card.

If you bring a poster with a giant cat and the word “FEED” on it into the Razor, people will politely move away from you with slightly puzzled looks on their faces.

My mom (a Democrat, yet a daily listener of right-wing talk radio, no matter how much my brothers and I beg her to stop) is a little sad tonight because I’ve just told her that Royal Marshall, producer/sidekick-of-sorts on Neal Boortz’ show, has died. He was 43.

    http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/wsb-radios-royal-marshall-805217.html

It’s a big deal in the Atlanta local news. He complained to his wife that he wasn’t feeling very well, and then, he just collapsed at his house. He was then rushed to Grady Memorial, but he could not be revived. It is sad. He leaves behind his wife and his two daughters, aged 4 and 2. They’re doing tributes for him on WSB radio right now.

And as far as sports go…? I want the Falcons to go to the Super Bowl. That is all. :)

I said “take it easy man, you can come home to my house,
I’ll get you a pillow where you can rest your head”
Took him home with me, let him in my house,
Let him drive my Cadillac that I could not afford
When I found out he’d been messin’ around with my baby

You know I’m mad like Al Capone (I’m burnin’ up)

Rodgers: 31-36, 366 yards and 3 TDs. Those are some sick numbers.

    @martha:

For the third time today I give you this:

    Junior Murvin Cool Out Son

This Packers defense might bend, but it doesn’t break. Leads are safe.

Favorite this and listen to it five times a day for the rest of the week.

So, Bears or Seahawks? We were just debating this. Which do you want?

ETA: just saw your answer to Yutsano…we think we agree.

@Omnes Omnibus: I do and I don’t. I really am of two minds on this, but honestly I’d just as soon the season be over and we can work on finding a replacement for Matty. The longer he goes the more I’m afraid he’s going to get Old Man Yells At Football syndrome.

@Omnes Omnibus: That’s been my rule ever since watching the Baltimore Orioles in 1979. They had *so* many ninth-inning comebacks that year. Anyone who left the games early missed a hell of a show.

Plus, upper deck seats were $1.50 with a student ID and you could bring in your own beer. And in Section 36 you could get a contact high. Why the hell not stay to the end of the game?

    @Andy K:

Yeah, the injury list really is astounding, isn’t it? As a fan, I’m really grateful to have Rodgers, but also Ted Thompson and all the behind-the-scenes folks who put together a team of such depth. And 6 games lost by a total of 20 points. If they lose, they lose, but they’ll fight.

    @Omnes Omnibus:

It would be the easier game. The weather in Chicago would neutralize our offense- if it’s typical January weather in Chicago. Temps in the 30s or above, we might do to them what we just did to Atlanta.

I would still like us to take a rubber match over dere by Soldiers Field. That would be sweet.

Adios for now. Packers post-game show here. Omnes, I’m counting on you to listen to it for me. I have to go grocery shopping.

@Yutsano: Actually, I don’t see that as a problem, as long as Carroll brings in a young QB to learn.

I don’t think Whitehurst is anything more than a backup. I don’t see anyone other than, say, Leinart as a suitable long term solution. If the QB of the future is a draft pick, keep Hassellback around for two years, allow the young ‘un to break in gradually…(and, really, if matt CAN perform tomorrow, that means he’s still acceptable at the position…)

Yeah, this a scrappier team than the one in the mid-to-late ’90s. And this team seems to play more as a team than that team did then. Kinda reminds me of the ’87 Detroit Tigers when compared to the ’84 team- for me anyway. The ’84 team had a lot more talent than the ’87 team, or so it seemed, but the ’87 team clawed it out through injuries, and a 5-game hole in the last week of the season.

@Loneoak: Way, way ahead of you.

Speaking of which, the Picasso exhibit I went to the other was decent. I understand the difficulties in putting together a show of his work. He painted for a hojillion years and the owners of most of his work won’t lend.

Even so, it seemed as if they should have just forgotten the blue and rose periods rather than have the small representation they had. Had they focused on Dora years and just expanded it I would have been happier.

As it was, my main memory was this cute hipster chick in black tights and a grey skirt and a brown cardigan. She smiled at me and then I noticed she was wearing wellies. And they just looked so out of place. And it’s not like I was going to talk to her anyway, just one of those pleasant “I look she look I smile she smiles” things, but gaddamn, wellies with a miniskirt?

@MikeJ: Yup. Passes were a breeze so no big issue. Although I love how I tell my parents I’m coming and they give away the guest bedroom to someone else. And they bitched about me having a hotel room for Christmas. I should just fire them all.

@gwangung: Whitehurst has flashes of brilliance syndrome. He’ll be amazing then he’ll be teh suck but there really isn’t much consistency. Which is a shame because he’s really not that bad of a QB. And there are worse ways to make a living than holding a clipboard for a few million dollars a year. I am all about bringing in a seasoned vet over drafting for a QB. I’d rather have one shovel-ready over needing seasoning while Matty plays for a couple more years and bangs himself up even further.

I drove my brother back to his house (where I’m staying) and we talked about the Bears game. He thinks they’re quite beatable. I kind of agree. But I put nothing past the Seahacks.
