How do you mean “working again” for links? Offsite links still show up wrapped in garbage javascript, so very, very broken.
Were they broken in some other way?
John Cole
What the hell is wrong with offsite links?
MikeJ
Offsite links are wonderful. Having them wrapped in javascript that forces them to open in a new window sucks.
1) I can’t decide if I want a new window, new tab, or reuse this tab
2) I can’t copy link location
3) I can’t bookmark the location, just the javascript wrapper
4) I can’t open it in a new tab in the background as it switches focus to the new window as soon as I click it
5) It’s a sign of creeping soçialism! Get the gubbmint out of my medicare links!

@John Cole:
In Chrome, I’d usually open up links with by Right-clicking, and then selecting “Open Link in New Tab”. Now, Right-clicking doesn’t do that, but clicking offsite links automatically opens them in a new tab. I very much like the new way.

My 3 and a half year old daughter wants me to sit on the floor in the freezer room with the lights off so she can shine her flashlight in my face while she snuggles me. Since there’s nowhere quite so snuggly as the freezer room.
Also we had a gas leak this morning, so the gas company shut off the gas and we have no heat or hot water. And they can’t come in to plug the leak until at least Tuesday. It hasn’t gotten too cold in here yet, but the fun is we have 2 more days to bask in the chill. Good times.

@John Cole: Several of us have reported the same problem as MikeJ and freelancer, it’s just that we all use different words to describe the problem.
Edit: there’s also a good description by TooManyJens at #116 in the “another maintenance” thread.
MikeJ
@freelancer: Control click also opens in new tab. Which I often like to do. I also often like to bookmark links so I can read them later, which you can’t do without having a new window forced on you, being made to look at it right then, and then bookmarking it.

YYYYEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
Gore Vidal is with me on Airplane! being the funniest movie EVAH!
Knew there was a reason I loved that guy!
asiangrrlMN
@freelancer: I just used control to make them open in a new window before. If they automatically open up in a new window now, I’m happy.
P.S. Gore Vidal destroys Pat Buchanan. Nice.

@asiangrrlMN:
@John Cole:
The problem with this is that if they FORCE a new window, then those of us who wanted to right click and choose between a new window and a new tab, cannot choose. We are now stuck with a new window; by forcing a new window, they take away each person’s choice and limit us all to a single option (the new window).

Appreciate new – open in new window – for outside links. An improvement IMHO.

Hmmm. Now that I’m back on the Mac I don’t see anyone’s avatars and everything else looks pretty much like it did yesterday. The avatars were only visible on my laptop which is running Vista. I should change that soon. My soon-to-be-ex-son-in-law gave me a copy of Windows 7.

I’m the opposite of freelancer; I like to use Balloon Juice as my base of operations and surf about the blogosphere from here. Links opening in new window will ruin that.

What kind of a programmer sits down and says, “You know what’s wrong with the Web? Links. They got links wrong. I can do better with some code of my own.”

Someone needs to put ABL on the list of contributors at the top of the page. (not the first to mention this)
ETA: @Jeanne ringland: the avatars are gone by fiat.

I don’t know if anybody else is seeing this, too, but all the words are still stretching out to the right ad infinitum rather than beginning a new line.

@WaterGirl: Ah. Got it. Yeah, I prefer a new tab rather than window as well.
@Jeanne ringland: Cole hated the avatars, so they are gone. Apparently, so is the new green color that was being used for non-linked usernames. Why does Cole hate Iran so?

I feel like Ralph Ellison up in here.

clicking the links in Chrome 8.0552 pops a new tab. I likey…

Ooh, bonus! Now also when everything stretches off to the right, the ads on the left stretch over to their right, hiding the post and the comments! It’s great, since I’d much rather read a bunch of crummy ads than the writing I came here to read! I don’t mean to sound bitter, since I’m not. I’m just practicing being, I think the kids these days call it “Snarky”.
BD of MN
or it did five minutes ago… oh well, back to right click…
asiangrrlMN
@Angry Black Lady: Nah, you can’t be invisible. That’s the domain of us Asians.
@PS: That, too! Nicely done.
@Yutsano: At first I read tattoos, which also made sense, but, yeah. I think that might get me kicked off the site, though.

Apparently share/save has destroyed first comments on a thread.
But diggin’ the new 1-pixel drop shadow on the comment box!

@Brisbane Belff (formerly G. Nelson Buttnergle (formerly Mumphrey (formerly Renfrew Squeevil (formerly Mumphrey Oddison Yamm (formerly Mumphrey O. Yamm (formerly Mumphrey)))))): Not seeing what you’re talking about. I love the fact that the center column doesn’t collapse totally if you shrink the window.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Oh I can make you both un-invisible. Just show your tatas here. That’ll do it.

@Brisbane Belff (formerly G. Nelson Buttnergle (formerly Mumphrey (formerly Renfrew Squeevil (formerly Mumphrey Oddison Yamm (formerly Mumphrey O. Yamm (formerly Mumphrey)))))): You can be as snarky as you like. No heat and no hot water is not fun.
Earlier on Int.Exp. the comments kept going but I haven’t checked lately. Firefox works fine.

@BD of MN: If you have a mouse with a wheel-scroll in the middle, clicking with that will also open the link in a new tab. I just discovered this recently and use it constantly now.
Also, Control + normal-click does the same for me.
ETA: I can edit now?
ETA2: Wow, yes I can! Two thumbs up.

Everyone, if you middle-click on a link, it will open in a new tab. Much faster than right-clicking and selecting from a menu. As far as I know, this works in Firefox, Chrome, and IE.

Oh, so this is what made Michele Bachmann a Republican…

I just saw this post on Booman’s site.

How do you feel about this, John Cole, or anyone else who has an opinion? Is there something more important that Rockefeller and Manchin know about that we don’t? Are the jobs vital enough to keep on removing mountain tops?
Jeanne ringland
@arguingwithsignposts: Ah. Thanks for the explanation. I thought it was the different platform.
Jeanne ringland
@Brisbane Belff (formerly G. Nelson Buttnergle (formerly Mumphrey (formerly Renfrew Squeevil (formerly Mumphrey Oddison Yamm (formerly Mumphrey O. Yamm (formerly Mumphrey)))))): I was having that problem in Vista, on the laptop for a while, and then it cleared up.
asiangrrlMN
Thanks to all mentioning the middle-click. Works like a charm.
Jeanne ringland
@liza: Does not work in Apple.
PS
@Jeanne ringland: But cmd-click still does
Jeanne ringland
@PS: Yes, it does. I just liked the idea of that center-click shortcut and I wanted to whine a little. ;-)

There used to be a “Respond” link/tag at the end of each main f/p post. Clicking on that would bring me directly to the Reply box for my own comments — handy when I didn’t want to scroll through 50-80-100+ comments. It’s a real issue on the BlackBerry. Any possibility of restoring that? TIA.
Jeanne ringland
@SiubhanDuinne: It works for me, but I had to scroll over the left side of your post to make it appear.
WaterGirl
@liza: Not if you have a macintosh! Especially a laptop with no external mouse.

Nobody cares about mac world. The mac is for babies.
WaterGirl
Looks like this issue with the forced new window may have been fixed.
liza
@WaterGirl: I don’t own a mac, so I can’t verify, but try this. It does require a three-button mouse.
It may be possible to configure a mac touchpad to middle-click using system preferences (not sure, though).

Comments squeezed together on Firefox.
Looks good on IE7.

yes, Vidal plays himself to the hilt, but that is only because he knows that on the stage of a dying, sentimentalist and sensationalist culture, who else could he play?
thanks for a wonderful clip.
ps: Vidal’s essays are well worth reading, if only for the exquisite snark.
