Mobile Site Trick

This post is in: 

If you’ve never commented from your mobile phone, you’ll never be able to switch to the mobile site. The work-around is to leave a comment. You can use this thread to do so. After you leave a comment, WordPress sets a cookie on your phone and then you can see the mobile site. The issue is something to do with an interaction between caching and the mobile site.

    There’s been a comment moderation problem.
    I had 2 moderated in the Levin post and others have had the same prob in newer than Levin posts.
    If this keeps up and we all come out of mod at once, it’ll look like a prison break.

    I haven’t had a problem with loading in the mobile site. But what has been a problem for me on it is that I can’t seem to reply to others’ comments (no linkys to do it) and I have to type in my email address every time I comment. I do not use the email function on my phone I just type in my regular email), so perhaps that’s the problem? Never had this problem unless I had to reboot my phone, in which case I had to type in my name and email.

    Firefox uses the mobile version on my droid. The default nook browser doesn’t even show this post, even after multiple refreshes.

    Also, in Firefox mobile when I get the mobile version and then click the “use the desktop version” link I get an error msg: “The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.”

    FYI: the “Switch to our mobile site” link is bad. I got the mobile site after leaving the comment, but it went back to the regular site when I returned to the Balloon Juice homepage, so I clicked the mobile site link and got a nav error. The hyperlink looks all kinds of wrong when you look at the target URL.

    My phone only makes and receives calls. I don’t have a smart phone because then all I would be doing would be refreshing this site all day. It’s bad enough I have a computer at hand 20 hours of the day..don’t need it for the remaining 4.

    I’ve commented from my iPod Touch before, but when I first navigated to the B-J site on it, it showed me the regular site, not the mobile one. The problem was magically fixed once I actually clicked into a thread and the mobile site seems to be working fine for me.

    I think I like the desktop site on the mobile better. The switch to desktop button didn’t work so I had to clear the cache and cookies to get it back. Oh, well.

    This ain’t so. (The fix, that is.) The mobile version would not render on my iPhone early this morning, now it does, and I have not commented in the interim (nor am I commenting from the phone now).

    I did notice this AM that the link for the mobile version (in the left sidebar) was wrong — did not actually point to BJ in fact, so something else was broken then fixed since then.

    I hate hate HATE the mobile version now. This is really bad news for me, because I read BJ and post comments almost exclusively from the BlackBerry. I hope some day to be able to establish myself with a proper computer, but at the moment this is what I have, and the changes just don’t work for me. Here’s some of what I’ve noticed since yesterday:

    One, it’s impossible to read the pale yellow type against the pale blue background (front-page poster’s name and everyone’s time/date stamp).

    B — there’s now no way to go directly from the main post to the reply box. There used to be the word Respond at the end of each FP comment, alongside the tags, which when clicked would take you directly to the reply comment window. It’s gone now in both desktop and mobile versions and means having to scroll through however many comments. Not too horrible on a desktop but murder on the thumb with the Berry.

    3. The mobile version no longer remembers my email address, and it’s a long one and means every single time I want to comment I have to type in the email addy each time. It’s okay on the regular desktop computer.

    IV: And in a genuine WTF moment, on the mobile version (only) none of the comments is numbered! What gives with that? So not only can I NOT click a Reply to individual comments (which I’ve never been able to do anyhow from the BB) but now I can’t even address a comment to, say, arguingwithsignposts #43 or jeffreyw #28 or asiangrrlMN #143 or whatever, because I no longer know what their post numbers are! And as mentioned in (One) above, identifying the comments by timestamp is almost impossible thanks to the yellow-on-white/pale blue type.

    All of this means that I will be mostly lurking from here on out rather than commenting. No great loss to any of you, but I will miss the interaction. (This is not a GBCW by any means; just an explanation for why you probably won’t see much of me for a while.)

    Sorry if I sound cranky, and I know I do, but it’s been a horrible pissy day at work and effectively losing Balloon Juice makes me very sad.

    And I know a lot of people worked very hard on the upgrades, and I know a lot of genuine problems got fixed, and I’m glad for that. Hope very much to be back amongst you before too long.

    @SiubhanDuinne: I have comment numbers on the mobile site from my iPhone. Completely agree that it’s a pain in the butt that the mobile site doesn’t remember my email address, but mistermix has been really good about (nicely) moving the mobile site along, so I bet he will try to get the email address thing resolved asap. I know it’s been a hard day, but don’t give up just yet! :-)

    Oh, and your voice would be sorely missed if you weren’t regularly posting.

    Because my BB is employer-issued and linked to my work desktop, I may be limited as to what fixes are possible for me (although I’m more than willing to give them a try and of course to wait and see what further BJ tweaks are in the works).

    Sigh. I suppose I should just go ahead and buy myself a computer and mobile/PDA/laptop/iPad/whatever toys — I’ve just had these provided for so long by my employer, they are pretty much all I know at this point.

    For instance, I’m currently commenting from my desktop at the office. We have IE (and only IE) as a browser. I’m pretty sure I’m not permitted Firefox or Chrome or Opera.

    Okay, thanks again. I feel a bit more cheerful now.

    My Sprint Android hero does not remember it is to go to mobile nor my email; however, autocomplete gives me email after 2 chars so that’s a win. I mostly comment from pc and followed via rss feed on phone.
