Now the Jests fans can look forward to the traditional high point of their season – booing their 1st round draft choice.
Just Some Fuckhead
Looked like Ryan thought they were gonna come back too. He really threw his headset down hard.
Captain Goto
Definition of mixed feelings: watching as the Steelers go to the Super Bowl, while finding out that Keith Olbermann has been canned.
Loneoak
It’s going to be two very long halves in two weeks! Go Pack!
Seriously, it’s going to be a huge showdown on BJ since Stillers and Packers fan are big factions.
handy
@Captain Goto:
I know right! I’m sick of seeing the Steelers in the Super Bowl.
IronyAbounds
Franco Harris is a fat slob. Does the guy have no pride in his appearance? Go Packers.
Oh yeah, and the rapist gets to another Super Bowl.
Captain Goto
Ummm…not eggzackly what I meant.
*LOVIN’* seeing Franco and Rocky out there.
Keith
Simms was hilariously wrong when second guessing the 3rd down pass play that absolutely sealed the Steelers win. With that Ryan immediately realized there was no chance for any heroic comeback – as it left only kneel downs needed to chew up the clock.
Ron
John, when you tweeted that they were doing “ok” at the half, I kinda laughed about it. It didn’t seem so funny when the Steelers forgot to show up for the second half.
Jon Art
That really was the best of football. What are your plans for the sixth?
Captain Goto
IA–You are an idiot.
I saw Franco in person a year ago. He looked like he could *still* play.
Anya
I don’t care much for football (please don’t hurt me) but I am such a dedicated Obot that I was rooting for the Bears. My mindfulness yoga teacher announced the final score at the beginning of class, so I was kind of disappointed but not that much invested in it. Congrats to those of you who were rooting for the Packers and Steelers.
Comrade Luke
@IronyAbounds: Franco owns Pittsburgh, probably more than any sports figure owns a town.
And by own, I mean he’s worshipped. I’m not terribly surprised he was on the podium.
asiangrrlMN
Go Steelers AND Packers!
Ron
And I’m glad you posted the youtube link again. I wanted to be able to put that up on my facebook page. Of course our household will be interesting since my wife is a Green Bay native.
Captain Goto
Anya–Hey, it’s all good. Da Bearz were my 2nd choice.
asiangrrlMN
Whyfore no permission to edit? FYWP!
I think I will root for both teams in the Super Bowl. That’ll make it a win-win situation for me.
SFAW
John –
Congratulations on your Steelers beating the Jets. I thought the Jets could pull it off, but after they blew the chance at the 1, well …
I am hopeful that the one good thing that comes out of this is that Brian Schottenheimer gets snapped up by another team. Maybe he, his Dad, and Paul Hackett can take over the coaching of the Lions, and lead them to greater glory.
IronyAbounds
@Captain Goto: I saw him 5 minutes ago – he looked like he couldn’t still play in a city league.
I loved it when Jim Brown talked about coming out of retirement at 50 because he didn’t want Harris breaking his record because Harris always ran out of bounds.
I’m sick to death of the Steelers. Guess it’s poetic justice though, Big Ben now will have one Super Bowl appearance for each rape charge.
I’m not a Packers fan by any stretch, but I hope they club those lugs.
suzanne
Just can’t get excited that the rapist is about to get more fortune and glory.
Plus, I hate football.
Omnes Omnibus
@Comrade Luke: Favre could have had that in an entire state.

IronyAbounds
Oh, and Rex Ryan, shut the fuck up. You couldn’t back up your talk, so go away, please.
geg6
Irony Abounds is a fucking asshole and should eat shit and die. Fucking asshole.
Steelers go to the Super Bowl!
asiangrrlMN
@Captain Goto: Aw, thankye. i have no idea what that is, but it sounds delicious! The Stillers are my second-fave team (behind the Vikes, natch), but I also have a soft spot for the Pack. See thread below for my feelings about the Pack v. the Steelers.
Violet
I have some friends who just got tickets to the Super Bowl.
Chris
I have to travel from Pittsburgh to Madison WI for a job interview on Tuesday. I’m wearing a Mendenhall shirt!
Svensker
@SFAW:
Yes. How about that pass on 3rd and goal at the one. Brian S. sucks sour owl pe-nices. Jeez.
Jets showed up in 2nd half, but forgot 1st half, Steelers vice versa. Steelers got more points and/or Jets screwed up more. Too bad two good teams didn’t show up in both halfs.
Oh well. At least we know Sanchez can play in the clutch.
Go Packers!
BobS
@IronyAbounds: The best reason to root for the Packers is their ownership.
Anya
@Captain Goto: Too bad the underdogs didn’t win.
@suzanne: You’re so brave saying that to crazy fans.
How can a rapist be allowed to play? If accused, what happened to innocent till proven guilty? Or are there two things that principle does not apply — accusation of rape against an athlete, and a Muslim accused of terrorism?
General Samsonov
Jets played their typical miserable first half. I thought they were spent after the Pats game, but they did come back, as did the Bears.
daveNYC
Fuckity fuck fuck fuck!
If Rothlesberger just got hit by a bus I’d be a lot more OK with this.
+5
Mr Stagger Lee
I hope the Pack Attack (Hawk and Matthews)get rowdy on the Steelers, Get rowdy as Rothlisberger in a bathroom stall as eminem would sing.
Martin
Can I make a site request? When you guys have game open threads, can you come back at the end of the game and post the score just as a little public service. I know there’s 10 billion places I can go to get the score, but since y’all are basically giving a play by play, not having closure on the score can be a bit frustrating.
JenJen
Congratulations John!!
Packers-Steelers is a kickin’-it-old-school kind of Super Bowl matchup that was 45 years in the making; hard to believe it hasn’t happened before. I think it’ll be a classic, and I’m pretty stoked for it.
And yeah, Rex Ryan showed exactly why players just love playing for the guy.
Really happy for you tonight!! Must be nice to consistently back a winner; I wouldn’t have any idea what that feels like. :-)
Yutsano
@JenJen: So what the hell is up with Carson throwing the “Trade me or I’ll retire” tantrum? I saw that and went Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
SFAW
It’s too bad nothing like that happened in the first half, so B.S. had no idea that the Steelers D-line might do that stuff. But I can see why he didn’t want to give the ball to Greene – Greene’s a wimp, he could only run through two or three tacklers.
He’s like his old man – get the team 90% of the way there, fuck up the last 20%.

Pittsburgh Going to the Super Bowl

Well the Jets-Steelers game was almost exciting. I could care less who wins the Superbowl. Hopefully the commercials and halftime show is good (sigh).

SFAW
He’s hoping to play for the Lions when Li’l Schotty goes there.

Well, that’s way more than you get with 90% of the coaches out there….

@suzanne:
Wait, he was convicted? I must have missed that.
MBA EyeDoc
Congrats John!
I am torn — my husband is a big Steelers fan and I am a big Packers fan. We watched the games with our respective jerseys on and have already begun the trash-talking. It is going to be an interesting two weeks at our house.
Oh yeah — we live in Houston so we plan to travel to Dallas for the big game…
SFAW
Perhaps.
Although I didn’t really say it, I think I was being exceedingly charitable with the “get the team 90%” comment. Based on some of the completely-fucked-up plays he’s called, I’m not sure how much of a contributor he really is.
JenJen
@Yutsano: You know, I’m a pretty disgruntled, bitter Bengals fan at this point; not frustrated so much with the players as with the ownership and management. But when I heard about Carson’s little death threat, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Enough, enough, enough. It’s a team of non-producing prima donnas, and if Carson wants to throw in with their lot, it’s no skin off my apple. Hey, if anyone wants him, they can have him. Just get rid of ’em all and start over.
But, (in my best Mike Brown impression), allow me to say that I’m certain the Bengals will do “what’s best for the organization”, and I’ll be selling my season tickets and watching more hockey. I just can’t take much more with this team.
Yutsano
@JenJen:
I’ve discovered the best way to get into hockey is to date a player. 6’3″ hunk of pure brutish defenceman. Nom.
MikeJ
@burnspbesq:
Do you know who was never convicted of genocide? Damn near nobody. So obviously, nobody has ever committed genocide.

I’ve always thought it was funny that Bradshaw didn’t get more Pittsburgh love. Is it because he didn’t stick around there after he was done playing?
General Stuck
The Steelers won and Jane got her car towed. So far, been one hell of a day. And to top it off I by some chance of googling Kentucky news sites from my former home state, ran across a news clip video of my first love I hadn’t seen nor heard from for 25 years. It was a profile on her, as director of a UMC Christian community center in the heart of Louisville’s worst neighborhood whilst living there also. I’m not religious, but the stuff they were doing was truly remarkable and good, and swelled my heart for her.
MikeJ
@MikeJ: Or, err, damn near anybody. You know what I meant. Don’t be a grammar nazi, I preempt.
JenJen
@Yutsano:
What, you think I haven’t tried this?! Hockey boys are scrumptious, tough, and, 7 times out of 10, Canadian. Yum.
MikeJ
@JenJen: I think the lack of teeth works better on guys, but I have no firsthand experience.
Mark S.
I’m surprised Green Bay is a 2-2.5 point favorite for the Super Bowl. I thought the Steelers would be favored by a couple.
ETA: And yes, I get all my sports news from HuffPo. You should too.
SFAW
And just to add to my comment at 47: look, I don’t think B.S. is a complete imbecile, I just think he has made some serious errors a number of times. For example, had he run the ball twice when the Jets were on the 1, I think it’s highly likely the Jets would have had a TD with almost 8 minutes left in the game, instead of 3. Then it would have been up to the Jets D to do their job, and there would have been plenty of time to get it back and tie it.
Coulda-woulda-shoulda, I know. And the best laid plans gang aft a-gley, but B.S. didn’t help.
Yutsano
@JenJen: I will just say this: Carrie Underwood chose well. Even if she did have to go through a Romo to finally get there.
And mine was indeed Canuckistani. We even discussed the actual M word. It didn’t work out because of psychological roadblocks we both put up. The story is long and complicated. But FWIW I’m a lot closer to where he lives now than I was before.
Omnes Omnibus
@JenJen:Is this the straight woman’s/gay guy’s version of dating a ballerina for the limberness or a equestrienne for the muscles of the “inner thigh” area?
IronyAbounds
@JenJen: As a bitter and disgruntled Bills fan, I understand completely the crappy organization issue. We have a senile cheapskate as an owner, which makes improving very difficult. Virtually every year since 1994 the teams making the Super Bowl are my least favorite teams in the NFL. I was ok with the Colts, but I loathe the Patriots, and despise the Steelers, so I’m really over football at this point. Back to college basketball, where Arizona is starting its rebirth in the post Lute Olson era.
robertdsc-PowerBook
I am just glad we don’t have to hear about Rex Ryan anyomre. His mouth was way too fucking much.
jaywillie
@Captain Goto: Ya know, the funny thing is: everyone I know in Pittsburgh HATES Iron City.
On the AFCCG: Steelers dominated in the first half; Jets made a game of it in the second. In a lot of ways, it wasn’t so different from the NFCCG. Those thinking the Packers will have an easy go of it with the Steelers, I think, are mistaken. Rogers is def the kind of QB that can beat the Steelers D. And the Steelers offensive line certainly has it’s problems.
But the Steelers have been overcoming injuries to the offensive line all season long and finding ways to win, especially when it counts. They know the kind of defense Dom Capers runs very, very well. And their defense can shut down any running game in the league.
The Packers will definitely plan on throwing it all over the place, but as we saw in Chicago today, Rogers is not unbeatable. Aside from defensive backs, Pittsburgh has the best safety in the game and probably the best front seven overall.
And all the rape jokes in the world don’t take away from the fact that Ben Roethlisberger is the 3rd best QB in the NFL, behind Manning and Brady. Yeah, he doesn’t put up huge numbers all the time but he will make plays that keep his team in the game. He’s in his 3rd Super Bowl in seven years (and his career stats are actually pretty solid) and the Steelers never would not have won the previous two without him. He sucked it up in SB XL, but he was invaluable at Cinci, Indy, and Denver, and he led a game-winning 4th Qtr drive in XLII.
As far as Rex Ryan goes: I love to hate him, but his post-game press conference was classy. He’s a very hard guy not to like, as bombastic and garrulous as he might be. I hope he wins a Super Bowl.
MikeJ
@Mark S.: Ladbrokes has the Steelers favourite, and they actually have money on it.
Costa Rica
Is it just me or did both games suck until the last ten minutes? Any way, hope the super bowl lives up to it’s name.
“stay classy San Diego”
SFAW
I guess if I were a Bills fan, I’d be bitter and disgruntled, too. It’s tough enough being a Mets fan, but you guys have it worse.
IronyAbounds
Gee, I find it very easy not to like the guy. Just shut up and do your job. If you say you’re going to win the Super Bowl every year, you damn well better do it. The Jets have done well because they have the best secondary in a pass happy league. Their offense sucks and they can’t win the big game. One post game interview doesn’t change the fact that he has a mouth that writes checks his teams can’t cash.
SFAW
Hey! Talk Murrican! This is football, dammit, not cricket or soccer.
Comrade Luke
@Omnes Omnibus: If you’re going for limber, I vote yoga instructor.
Violet
OT – Jack LaLanne has died. Link. He was 96.
Comrade Luke
@Mark S.: I think that’s being fair. The Steelers line is incredibly beat up and they likely lost their center today. Their D is obviously good, but playing on the artificial turf is advantage Pack.
That said, I’d be surprised if it got to more than 3 either way. These teams are hugely popular, and whichever way the spread is, fans of the opposing team will pull it back.
Fuzz
@jaywillie:
Not to get into a tired debate about who’s better but there is no way Roethlisberger is third best in the NFL. Aaron Rogers and Matt Ryan are definitely better than him. Then add Phillip Rivers and maybe even Eli Manning.
morzer
@Fuzz:
Based on what? I find Roethlisberger repellent, but I don’t see that any of them have achieved what he has.
SFAW
Well, yeah.
Except for their rushing defense.
And their team rushing.
But outside of that, they suck.
SectarianSofa
Speaking of bumblebees…. Really, just a few minutes before visiting bloonjuice, sitting at the desk in my house, I was hearing a strange sound I couldn’t place. Kind of a vibrato rumble. Sounded like bees — closest thing to the sound. I thought maybe something odd was going on with my computer speakers (web ads, sound card dying?). I turned those off — noise continued. I got up to walk out of the room to see if I could find where it was coming from. Standing up, realized that two feet away from me, one of our cats was curled up, asleep, snoring. Not the whisper-quiet operation she promised when I let her sleep on that blanket.
IronyAbounds
@SFAW: Every time I hear missed FG described as “wide right” I start twitching for an hour or so. On December 28th of last year I remembered it was the 47th anniversary of the last Bills game I attended, a playoff game against the Pats in weather not unlike that in Chicago and Pittsburgh today. We moved the next summer and I missed out on the two AFL championships (great teams that would have given the Browns and the Packers a great game). Obviously, the 4 Super Bowl losses still sting – Jim Kelly is one helluva guy and certainly deserved a ring more than misogynist Ben, and Buffalo deserves a championship before the Bills pack up and move out of town, but it just isn’t going to happen.
Quiddity
@IronyAbounds: You think you’ve had it bad. How about us Detroit Lions fans? Finally, after years of pathetic non-action by the owner (W.C.Ford Sr.), things are beginning to improve.
Svensker
@IronyAbounds:
He is doing his job — his way of doing it is to run his mouth. I’d say he’s done a pretty good job, too. Still needs some work, but not bad for a 2nd year coach with a 2nd year QB.
Andy K
@Anya:
Always remember this: He grew up in Hawaii. Hawaii’s closest thing to professional football has only ever been the stinkin’ Pro Bowl, the absolute worst of the Big Four’s all-star games. Don’t expect the man to make well-informed statements about professional football.
morzer
@Svensker:
Evening, Svensker. Long day, eh? At least you had the pleasure of watching Brady hop up and down like a rabbit on speed a week ago. That’s worth remembering, surely.
IronyAbounds
@SFAW: Their rushing offense numbers were grossly inflated because of two games against the Bills, who in the infinite wisdom of their coach went to a 3-4 defense without 3-4 personnel. The Jets had 500 yds of rushing in just those two games.
SFAW
Did Cookie play in that game? He was a great player. Too bad he didn’t get to see them win the SB.
I agree re: Kelly, BTW. And, I agree, it would be nice to see them win it once, even though they were the Jets’ nemeses for many years.
suzanne
@Anya:
Oh, thank you so much for the attitude adjustment. ‘Cause me believing he’s guilty is EXACTLY the same as being convicted in a court of law!
With logic like that, you probably think I’m suppressing your right to free speech because I’m telling you that I think you’re full of shit.
IronyAbounds
@SFAW: Yeah, Cookie played, but gained next to nothing. I still remember the cry of “Lookie lookie, there goes Cookie!” lol. The Rockpile was a very interesting stadium.

Haters gonna hate.
All you Jets haters who aren’t jumping on the Steelers bandwagon, GFY. They are the only team to make the conference championship game the last two seasons. Get used to it, because they’re gonna be back.

It was a rough day, although it was fun seeing Hanie (sp?) play so well for the Bears. Just a shame our guys waited too late to step it up. Oh well, the thrill o’ victory and da agony a defeet, etc. etc.
Captain Goto
IA: FWIW, I remember rooting like hell for that FG to get through. Agree 100% on Jim Kelly.
And I always liked Marv Levy.
And jaywillie–funny thing about Iron City; when I first got legal I thought it was horse piss. Last couple of times I tried it, I didn’t think it was so bad.

What you believe is irrelevant. Period, full stop.
If you want to call him a creep, a boor, or a jackass, fine. But he’s not a criminal.
I’m sorry you’re struggling with the idea that you don’t get to redefine words that have accepted and understood meanings. That’s your issue, and you own 100 percent of it. There is no reason for you to lash out.
MikeJ
@burnspbesq: “Not a convicted criminal” is not the same as “not a rapist”.
Ron
@MBA EyeDoc: We have a two-team household like that here. While I’m obviously rooting for the Steelers to win, I have to say that if they lose, I’d probably rather it be to the Packers than any other NFC team.
IronyAbounds
@burnspbesq: Hmmm, despite never being convicted, I have no qualms about calling Cheney a war criminal. History is full of rich assholes who have used their celebrity, status and/or money to avoid arrest, let alone conviction. She didn’t call him a criminal, and lots of people think he’s a rapist.
Violet
@MikeJ:
Exactly. And especially with things like rape, many never get reported and it’s very hard to convict. That doesn’t mean someone isn’t a rapist.

Cacti
The worst thing about the build up to the Super Bowl will be how going back (and FSM forbid, winning) will prove that Big Ben is actually a first class human being and someone to be admired.
Yutsano

Here we go!
One of these days you will ALL see the mythic dimensions of what the Steelers organization, team and fan base is.
Until then….. bow down to the six time champs and 8 time SB participants – the Pittsburgh Steelers.

FWIW, Roethlisberger seems to have cleaned up his act, and has stopped being nearly such a douche. None of this changes what he did or didn’t do in the past, but at least he seems to have learned the right lessons from the whole affair, and become a better person. That’s better than some entire major political parties in this country already (yeah, I know, low bar).
Jill
Well, John, as a Jets fan, I’m going to congratulate you and your team. But that’s only because there are only so many things I can cry about, and right now Olbermann trumps the Jets.
All season, the Jets have played heart-attack football, with come-from-behind wins. They got away with playing 2 quarters of football against Manning and Brady, but the hell with Roethlisberger — that guy Mendenhall? Sheesh. A one-man wrecking crew. I knew you couldn’t do that against them.
Fortunately, I turned the game off when it was 24-3, so I’d already given up. Or I’d be curled up in a fetal position in the corner, still weeping over Christina Taylor-Green, Olbermann, and now the Jets.
So congrats, I guess — but I still hate Roethlisberger with the fire of a thousand suns.
Susan Ross
LOL, Rex Ryan being classy? Humbled, finally, is more like it. Thank god someone shut him up, even if it was the scumbag rapist and his band of thugs.
Since the Jets are the ONLY team I would ever hope were beaten by the Steelers, all that’s left to say is-GO PACK!!!!!!!
Svensker
@Susan Ross:
Hey, Rex may be a loudmouth and not everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s not an asshole. Players love him and so do the fans.
That said, go Pack.

Rex should do a little sole-searching this off-season, yes? His lovely-footed wife will be no im-ped-iment!
