Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So many bastards, so little time.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Usually wrong but never in doubt

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

No Justins, No Peace

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Israel is using food as a weapon of war. Unforgivable.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Hot air and ill-informed banter

“Look, it’s not against the rules anywhere, but a black woman with power was dating and there has to be something wrong with that.”

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

White supremacy is terrorism.

In after Baud. Damn.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

I’m going over to a friend’s house, so I won’t be here for the Superbowl open thread. I just have this to say: fuck Ronald Reagan. It’s incredible how, even when he’s dead, that man can keep ruining things. Seriously, fuck him in every orifice. In fact, I hope the worms made a lot of holes in his dead body so he can get fucked even more.

    Go Pack.

Hey, back then, the Bud Bowl was a lot more exciting than the Super Bowl, where the score was usually 52-6.

Does anyone else hate those NFL films documentaries? A bunch of slow motion, pretentious narration, classical music, and terrible camera angles. I’ve never gotten a feeling from watching one what the game was actually like.

My Dad’s contribution to “Lawyer up”:

You have to see how the courts of appeals frame the issue before you know how the Supremes are going to rule. It will definitely be in the area of 5-4 and the mandate will not invalidate the whole law. Probably we will see nothing from them for another year and a half and a lot could happen before then. Agreed that Roberts will be concerned with the Court’s legitimacy.

I’m rooting for the Pink team…

    Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let’s pretend we’re just two people and
    You’re not better than me.
I’d like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the jobless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
    Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
    And tell me why?

    Dear Mr. President,
    Were you a lonely boy?
    Are you a lonely boy?
    Are you a lonely boy?
    How can you say
    No child is left behind?
We’re not dumb and we’re not blind.
They’re all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

Etc. etc. etc. rah rah rah.

@inkadu: NFL Films will occasionally use movie scores in their films, but they are famous for commissioning composers to write music for their films. Hundreds and hundreds of short pieces, most orchestral. Some are so famous you now hear them in Chunky Soup commercials or other officially licensed thing.

iTunes, Amazon, etc. all sell NFL Films music. It’s good stuff if you like scores.

@DougJ: The wiki for the Bud Bowl doesn’t explain its demise on national television, though it does have a footnote indicating that it still took place as of 2006. It also somewhat inexplicably renders the 3rd and 8th Bud Bowls in Arabic numerals, while the other six got the Roman treatment. Go figure.

If by timeless you mean the late 1960s through the middle of the 1970s.

Most of that music is just some bizarre blend of the pop music of the time, jazz (well, not really jazz since the arrangements allow for no improvisation, so jazz-ish), funk and classic movie scores. It’s leisure suit music.

    @hilts:

I think “leisure suit music” is a bit harsh.

I don’t think it’s harsh enough. It’s really bizarre music. It’s like porn- not porn music- as described by Peter Boyle’s character in Hardcore: Nobody makes it. Nobody shows plays it. Nobody sees hums it. It’s like it doesn’t even exist.

@Napoleon: OK, now I have the song “From Blown Speakers” in my head. Love the NPs. Wish Neko sang with them more though….

Once Bud Light Lime was allowed to play – with the obvious performance enhancing drug usage – the game was ruined, and Bud Bowl ended in disgrace.

    I blame the Dutch.

ok was anyone else as confused by the reading of the Declaration of Independence as I was. First what does that have to do with football? Then when it started and I could see by some of the cuts it was pretty clear they werejust reading a couple phrases and and some didn’t seem to understand the context. I almost wanted to see them do the whole thing to be even more confused, so I was kind of disappointed that they decided to skip over the list of grievences.

    @hilts:

It would be nice if they brought Sergio Mendes up and did Mas Que Nada. Other than that, I could care less about the circus that surrounds the Super Bowl, and more so this year because the Packers are playing in the game. Although it would be nice to see the Art Ensemble of Chicago play halftime one of these years before they’re all dead.

I could go for some Art Ensemble of Chicago, Weather Report, or Tangerine Dream myself.

    @BGinCHI:
I haven’t heard the new Decembrists yet. I’ve cooled off from my former hot pace of 10+ cds/month. When I was working from home I could crank tunes all day. Now I work feet away from three colossal gas boilers and music listening is out of the question. I don’t generally like music as background noise because it’s distracting but I just figured out how to pretty benign compression with my digital mastering processor so I can have instrumental recordings on and it’s not intrusive. DSP is the bomb.

I kind of do care who wins the game but only in the cultural sense that other people care. I have nothing personal invested in the outcome.

I’ve been pushing the New P***phers on anyone who will stand still. Utter genius. Why did it take this long for ’80s pop to be perfected? Neko’s solo stuff is pretty outstanding as well. Even the country record.
