Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Be a wild strawberry.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Republicans in disarray!

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Each of us was put here for a reason, and for some of us that reason is to serve as a bad example.

Yes, Nanny Ogg is my literary role model, however did you guess?

“Sometimes the purpose of your life is to serve as a warning to others.” One of a favored series of demotivational posters, shows the bow of a freighter sticking up out of the ocean.

“Hard work often pays off in the long run, but laziness pays off now.”

Yeah, Simon and Garfunkle have misled a lot of people over the years … thank god some are still on the right road!

Reminds me of a time in high school when a bunch of drama students were sitting around at lunch with a guitar singing “The Boxer” (it was the ’70s …). Whenever they got to the “lailailai” bit, we band students would slam the steel door of the fire exit. For some reason, that pissed them off. People can get so serious …

for some of us that reason is to serve as a bad example.

This makes me think of the concept of “wrang-wrang” in Vonnegut’s brilliant Cat’s Cradle.

    @Luthe:

    I SING OF DEAD BUNNIES
    -Anonymous
    tunes: “Sweet Betsy From Pike”
OR “My Favorite Things” (though the scan sucks somewhat)

I sing of dead bunnies, and burnt baby chicks
Barbecued squirrels, and hamsters on sticks
Ducklings in blenders, and frogs off the road
Opossums on fenders and deep french-fried toad!

Sliced and diced sparrows, dead dogs on the lawn
Cats riddled with arrows, and disemboweled faun
Pickled canaries, and clubbed baby seals
Mice served in berries, and turtles ‘neath wheels

    Minced baby earwigs, koala fillet
Rat Pie with custard, and cockroach puree
Fred’s little brother, and Mystery Beast:
These are the things that they served at the Feast!

I am actually enough of a grownup that I listened to that whole thing and laughed twice. Otherwise the desecration of the original would have been too painful.

(Refuses to listen to “Eat It” to this day)

    I love this.

Just finished re-reading Maskerade last night.

I’m going to NADWCON in Wisconsin and I’m doing research on Casanunda and Nanny Ogg, for costuming purposes.
