Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

He really is that stupid.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

This fight is for everything.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

We still have time to mess this up!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The revolution will be supervised.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

I really should read my own blog.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

My spousal unit and I were just in the garage, working on my snatch. I can handle 105 lbs now!

And I don’t know what I did to deserve it, but I’ve had this stupid thing in my head all day.

I’m supposed to be cooking dinner, but I had a truly horrific day. Got sent for an x-ray, unexpectedly. No big deal there, but the x-ray technician was incredibly rude. She asked me terribly invasive questions, wouldn’t believe my answers to her questions, continued to pry into things that were clearly outside of her scope of practice and need to know and were not related to the x-ray procedure. Then tried to use the “I’m just doing my job” excuse when I got frustrated by her refusal to believe what I was saying.

I finally just said, “Fine, do what you have to do” and she continued to try to explain to me that she just was just doing her job. I said, “I know, just do what you have to do” and she went on and on for another five minutes. It was like she had some need to MAKE me understand her situation. I understood it alright, but I also have been to plenty of doctors and medical professionals and know that there is a line of medical ethics and she crossed it BIG TIME.

By the time she finally decided she couldn’t convince me of her right to ask me incredibly invasive questions (and not just about me, but about family members), she left to get the radiologist to sign off on some paperwork and she SWORE at me under her breath as she left the room. Talk about unprofessional.

Her questions were so invasive that after she left I just lost it and started crying. When she comes back she looks at me and says, “Are you okay?” NO, I’M NOT FUCKING OKAY! You just badgered me about incredibly personal issues that you have no right to be discussing with me and that were not pertinent to the x-ray procedure and NOW you are worried if I’m “okay”? Give me a break.

I’ve been pretty much non-functional the whole rest of the day. Oh, sure I’m doing a few things, but between being in pain (the reason for the x-ray) and this woman’s completely unprofessional demeanor, it was a really crappy day.

    Happy Valentine’s Day.

I didn’t know there was even a doctor there. My doctor sent me to this imaging place, so my doctor wasn’t around. I know they are required to ask certain questions, and I’d already answered the questions in the form I filled out, and initially when she came in the room. Then she kept going with more and more personal questions, even including family members who weren’t present, etc. It was astonishing.

Last night, several of us committed to posting videos tonight.

This seems as good a place as any to start, since it’s an open thread. And I’m setting a theme for tonight: Broaden Your Fuckin’ Horizons, Goddamn It!

Everyone always complaining about how they don’t know anything about the music the kidz are listening to these days. Well …

There have been a number of critics polls in the last two months. I’ll post links to three polls in the next post (so I don’t break the three link limit in this one). Find one, pick out a band that finished in one of the polls, and post a link to one of their songs. Just for tonight, let’s skip all the nostalgia for the last century, and try to find some good songs from this one.

I’ll start: White Sky — Vampire Weekend

Broaden your fuckin’ horizons, goddamn it!

Going to try a shortwave Fm radio, I think, one of the Grundig’s under 100 bucks, that are supposed to pull in FM stations very well. And messing around listening to shortwave might be kind of fun. Anyone owned one of these out there?

@General Stuck: I’ve owned shortwave pocket receivers, although not Grundig’s. It’s the gold standard for the things, though.

S/W is a lot of fun, but it’s not something you can necessarily tune in and forget. It fades in and out, stations jump to different frequencies at certain times, and it’s generally a fair bit of work.

@Violet: Ugh. And swearing at you? That is waaaaaay out of line. Shades of Nurse Ratched.

It never ceases to amaze me when somebody gets a little medical knowledge and proceed to decide that they KNOW EVERYTHING and are now GOD OF MEDICINE. I’ve had lab techs, X-ray techs, physical therapists and nurses tell me my doctor’s advice is wrong and if I have the medicine, treatment or surgery they are prescribing, I will be healed.

When you aren’t feeling well and if you had to remove garments and wear the blue gown that shows your rear end, it can really get to you.

The best revenge is to wait until you calm down and then send a letter of complaint to your insurance, with a copy to some local media figure. The only thing that will hurt the facility more than being under contract for measly payment with an insurance provider is not being under contract and losing the measly payments entirely. And I once won a battle with an HMO over an MRI by copying my email complaint to Al Martinez, who at the time wrote a column for the LA Times. All he did was email me back “Go get em, Mary!” but I got what I wanted right away.

BBC World Service, for example, the mainstay of my youth and early adult years, stopped its North American Service in 2001. You can still pick up BBC WS beamed to other areas off the back of an array, or long-path…

In the case of Manning, who is not a player representative or member of the NFLPA’s executive board, his opinion carries great weight throughout the NFL.

@General Stuck: I owned a Grundig YB-400 (?) a few years back. A good radio. I was a shortwave nut many many years ago and found it somewhat disappointing this time around. The hams area still out there with Morse Code, though.

I don’t know if they pull in FM in stereo. I don’t recall two speakers on mine.

We’re taking our daughter out for dinner tonight. She got a bouquet from her boyfriend today but he’s unavailable tonight (he took her out for Valentine’s Day this weekend).
    McCormick & Schmick’s tonight. Yum!

@General Stuck: The real key to pulling in distant or difficult stations is the antenna. See if your rig lets you attach an external antenna. The higher you can rig it, the better.

I thought Fleet Foxes’ sound was “different” in an interesting way. Will be looking for their next album myself.

I think the Grundig G4000A does stereo through the headphone connection.

So sorry. Don’t let her ruin your day — she shouldn’t have that much power. Right? Right! Hope the pain gets better FAST.

    Big hugs.

    @Violet: That just sucks.

I had one at Kaiser in Anaheim a couple of years ago, and after from all the yuckiness that preceeded it, the MRI itself was almost enjoyable. The tech was great, a funny gentleman who had me giggling before we started.

    @frosty:

That’s the main reason I posted this, if someone might know about the ability to attach say a coaxial cord from my dish dish. Or some other type of connectivity to an antenna. I will likely just call Eton, or Grundig and ask first, as it wasn’t mentioned on their website.

Simply adore Van Morrison. Worst diction in the history of music, but he’s got soul, so much soul. Thanks for that clip.

The Silencers! One of my favorite songs by them is the song Letter From St. Paul — one of my favorite put-down song. The woman writing the letter is sliced and diced and served with her own words.

Also, The Byrds version of Wild Mountain Thyme.

If it hasn’t been mentioned before, today is also the 20th Anniversary of Best Picture winner The Silence of the Lambs. In honor of that, here’s one of the songs from the musical, as performed by Legos:

@General Stuck: A quick search on YB-400 and here you go. This is the latest version of the one I had:

    http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/0400.html

“External jacks on the side of the radio are provided for earphone (3.5 mm), antenna (3.5 mm) and 9 VDC input. The YB-400PE comes with: Grundig brand AC adapter, stereo ear plugs, wind-up antenna …”

I thought I remembered stringing wire in a hotel room in Bolivia!

    @frosty:

Thanks Frosty. I guess maybe they all have that then. Kind of thought they did, but the manual really sucked. The G8 is kind of weird, you have to buy the AC adapter separate, and ear plugs, but it is cheaper and has better reviews
