Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

The current Supreme Court is a rogue court. Very dangerous.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

I was promised a recession.

Books are my comfort food!

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

So many bastards, so little time.

This blog will pay for itself.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Please don’t feed the bears.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

“woke” is the new caravan.

There is a large yellow globe in the sky that looks familiar, but I have not seen it for months. The presence of this object has made everything seem brighter and more cheerful, yet I find it unnerving.

Also, my gmail account reached 6000 messages, and the idea of checking my mail was starting to give me chest pains, so I just trashed everything. If you emailed me and have not received a response, I apologize. Send it again if it was important.

Ah I was gonna link to the South Dakota let’s-murder-abortion-providers bill but I see John is already on top of things.

I guess if you see abortion as murder there is a certain logic to this, though I still don’t understand why it’s okay to value an unborn fetus’ life more than a grown human being’s.

Conversely, I think you need to add “Don’t fucking bother me if its not important.” Perhaps people could put something in the header to tip you off about whether the information is important like “This time for real!” or “Exclusive!” or the ever popular “West Virginia Man makes tons of money at home, while losing belly fat and whitening teeth.”

Stanley Kurtz has a piece up at NRO where he explains that Obama is playing 11 dimensional chess with his budget. Kurtz goes on to say:

Even so, as the battle is shaping up, Obama is slated to win. The country as a whole fails to grasp the magnitude of the coming fiscal crisis. Advantage, Obama. What to do?

The answer, I think, is to tell a (true) story about Obama’s long-term aims and intentions. If the word socialism makes you uncomfortable, try “unaffordable Euro-style welfare state.”

So this is Kurtz’ whole deal. Fighting the long war against Obama. I love the parenthetical (true).

where’s a website or tweeter following for unemployed persons? I got a suggestion for the 99ers out there and want to get it to as many people as possible.

The idea? Get as many unemployed people running for elected office as possible.

The biggest problem with our unemployment crisis is that there are few people in politics who even know what it’s like to be unemployed. Their families are all employed, their lobbyist friends are all employed… so what do they know outside of their small social circles? As a result, they don’t seem to get how hard it is out here in the real world.

So we need more people in office who DO know. That’s us.

Now, I know it’s a bit expensive to run for any elected office, but even a state-level position would help as a lot of states are facing massive cuts in social services and unemployment aid. We certainly need a few for the U.S. Congress, but let’s try for state-level first.

Oh, and the good thing? The jobs pay well, the hours are good, and there’s great benefits.

The thing is, there are a lot of paperwork to fill out and petitions to start and fundraisers to generate revenue to pay for even the sign-up fees. And there’s a ton of deadlines too, and they come up faster than you realize. We’re halfway through February as is.

So: to all unemployed. Run for office. Start looking into it NOW.

I’ve got my campaign slogan: Wartenberg for Congress. I Need The Work.

Damn! Sorry you got rid of my email. Now you’ll never know what really happened in Roswell. Tough luck buddy.

    But this is very interesting!

There’s a giant planet right here, hiding in our Solar System. One that nobody has ever seen, even while it is four times larger than Jupiter and has rings and moons orbiting it.

This is hashing over old old ground, but the reason I was nearly certain the Iraq regime didn’t have any significant weapons of mass destruction was that it was painfully obvious the administration really really really wanted to go to war with them, and was throwing out every justification for it it could. I figured that if there was any concrete evidence of such weapons, the administration wouldn’t have hesitated to publicize it, classified information be damned.

What really disturbs me though is even after it became clear there were no weapons of mass destruction, that would invaded another country on the basis of a completely specious casus belli, hardly any one cared. Bush was even re-elected. I still find that difficult to let in.

I’d sent you an email about the site’s IE issues. I think it might be a race condition having to do with the loading and execution of scripts. When I recreate the issue and look at the DHTML tree, I see that the main content of the page has been listed more than once.

I’d be happy to look into this issue some more, if you’d like. (No charge; I’m a fan of the site.) I’ll email you again.

i believe i’ve seen that double-load thing a couple of times while testing the pie filter in FireFox. when i need to re-do it after a site change, i’ll add some alerts to my script to help me see what my parser is running into. and sometimes (very rarely, and less frequent lately) those alerts will come in pairs, as if the page is being loaded twice.

There is a large yellow globe in the sky that looks familiar, but I have not seen it for months.

It’s here in New York too, alas, the mid-50s we had yesterday have been replaced by the upper 20s. It’s supposed to warm up again tomorrow, so who knows?

I have to say, though, that February has been very quiet compared to the endless snow in January.
