E-mail from the family matriarch:
Wow. Just so you know – I think we need to balance our budget and bring the deficit down – but this governor has certainly has done this in the most divisive manner possible. And he CLEARLY has some other draconian items coming up in his budget next week.
We had 13,000 at the Capitol yesterday; another 10,000 there today. All day. All night last night. As far as I/we can tell – it’s NOT about paying more for health and pension. This crowd is about the full on assault on bargaining rights in a state that has traditionally been relatively union friendly. (hope you read the link I sent from CNN Money re middle class)
–
Madison Public Schools closed today because the teachers are in mass at the Capitol. Just a minute or so ago – on the news – the statewide Wis Educ Assoc has called for teachers across the state to demonstrate – report to the Capitol on Thur & Fri. Actually demonstrations are going on all over the state.
We have revolution going on right here at home. Read this article to get the feel what what is really going with our gov and etc. And the other stuff on the right side at our choice.

@trollhattan: I misread John’s post and thought it was like the Wire. He just said it sucked him in LIKE the Wire. I can’t buy silly bullshit and the Danson character is just dopey.

Season 1 of Damages is fantastic season 2 is pretty good S3 lost me pretty quickly.

Did I miss the update on The Ass Glands of Tunch?
It sounded like the beginning of an epic drama worthy of TV or even a moving picture (of the disgusting grunge horror genre).

@BD of MN:
Since I’m basically in the Dark Ages of TV watching, can someone tell me what you have to have to watch Netflix streaming? Do you have to have some sort of gaming device (XBox, etc.)? Or do you just use your cable connection straight to your TV or via your DVR? How does it work?
Martin
@trollhattan: Well, CA is already committed to $30B for HSR, so there are no ‘savings’ here to be had for not taking the matching funds.
It’s more than a little annoying that a voter initiative puts us in such a good position, but what can you do?

I’m in the middle of Season 2 of Damages, but had to take a break. It’s well-done but after awhile you start to wish at least a few of the main characters would be a bit likable. To Cole and anyone else here who has streaming Netflix, try the Canadian series, Intelligence. It is a take-off of The Wire, and while not as good, it’s still pretty stellar.

@Violet: You mean like videos on your hard drive? I don’t believe so (and you might as well just hook up right to your tv at that point). However, the $99 model has a USB slot, so you could load up a flash drive and watch stored videos that way.
ETA: if that was a need for you, maybe an Apple TV is the way to go. It can act as a media center plus stream Netflix. More expensive, however, and my daughter bitches about the wireless sync time.

I’m watching the new retooled American Idol and it makes me think of the conversation I had with my mother about Sarah Palin. She said that the country will never vote for Sarah Palin as President because they’re smart enough to see how stupid she is and how scary a wingut she is. Well I’m not ready to depend on the inteligence on the US or the US common sense. Common sense would mean that Kos and FDL would stop the Impeach Obama BS and be pragmatic. Based on what I’ve dared to see when I took a dip in that scalding pool, KOS and FDL would be thrilled if Obama loses to Sarah Palin because then they can “remake the Democratic Party.” So no, I have no faith in common sense anymore.
When the one who wins American Idol isn’t the poster child for Evangelicals and is acually based on whether they can sing the best, then maybe I’ll have faith. Until then, I’ll just continue to be pragmatic. Obama may not be perfect. But I don’t want Sarah Palin to become President. Or any of Tea Party Nation.

Got sucked into DAMAGES too, I was sick in bed and just watched the whole damn series in two days. S2 has its dull parts but it was still worth watching. I haven’t seen S3 because I’m waiting and waiting and waiting for them to release it on DVD.
I disagree about the Ted Danson character. I didn’t find him dopey at all. I loved that the show made him likeable and at the same time a fierce narcissist and sociopath. Danson played him beautifully on the edge. Classic performance.
As for streaming on your TV, there is some sort of hookup on your laptop, I’ll betcha. I have a Macbook and it has a mini-DVD port. I bought a Mini-DVD-to-S-Video adapter, and a plain old S-Video cable. Connected it to the TV and selected the input. The only trick I had to learn was to plug it in to the laptop *first* and *then* click ‘fullscreen.” If you have it on Fullscreen, and then you plug the cable into the laptop, it messes up the picture pretty weirdly.

Sorry, stepped away to have dinner for a bit.
No, I mean things that are streaming. Most specifically, hard to find sports on American TV (think: cricket, rugby, other English sports). Some of these are available via online streaming, but the small laptop screen is kind of a pain to watch for sports. A better option would be to find a higher quality way to stream them and watch them on a TV screen. So far that’s been very hard to find/do.

1) my younger cat of ten years, Page, has a lump on her backside that the vet wants to remove. The test didn’t come back as cancer but it’s not a normal inflammation from the booster shots.
2) my state’s governor just cut the highspeed rail plan between Tampa and Orlando. While I’m not a huge fan of the rail (it’s mostly for tourists to hop between Disney and the bay beaches), it did mean jobs in a state that needs them. Worst of all was how Rick “MEDICARE FRAUD” Scott made the decision: by imperial decree. He didn’t even consult the GOP-held state lege which had backed the highspeed rail project. Nice job pissing on your own party, Scott.

Anyone here besides me watching Detroit 1-8-7? It’s good! If you liked Wambaugh-esque shows like Boomtown, Southland, The Unusuals… (uh oh)… okay, then: Catch it while you can!
@Violet:
If you have a good monitor and are watching solo, you can take the easy way like me: let Netflix download something called “Microsoft Silverlight” on your PC, re-boot, and get full access. (The NF bots even set up a separate “Instant Viewing” tab with all the stuff from my existing queue that was available for streaming.)
Violet
@Anne Laurie:
But does that mean you are watching it on your PC?

KG
@Anne Laurie: let your computer download “Microsoft Silverlight”? Granted, I’m about five years removed from working on a PC, but isn’t that like saying “here, download this virus onto your computer”?
Anne Laurie
@Bmaccnm:
Well, if you trust Microsoft, you can use the advice in my previous comment (which Violet, I see now, doesn’t need). Our household does Netflix as an alternative to cable, so it’s been very convenient for me just to use the PC for solo viewing, no extra hardware required.
Violet
@Anne Laurie:
Since you do Netflix as an alternative to cable, how do you watch things like CNN or MSNBC or whatever? Are those on Netflix? I feel seriously dumb about this, but I’m trying to figure out how to keep things I want to watch and also find ways to watch things that right now are very hard to watch, plus save money.
I don’t watch much cable news, but if something is happening, it’s nice to have the option. I do want local channels because I’m a weather junkie and if there’s a hurricane heading my way, local news offers the best local information.
I also like my DVR, although I’m plenty happy to find another way to record/watch shows. I just want it to work as easily, for the most part, as the DVR does.

Both my tivos are so full, I feel bad.
I loved Chuck, but I think this will be it.

Anne Laurie
@Violet: Yup. Same as Hulu, or the higher-quality YouTube stuff. Probably not what you want for sports, but the “full screen” option on my 23″ Acer monitor is comparable to the household’s 10-year-old TV, anyway.
As for trusting the Microsoft viewing software (Silverlight), the Spousal Unit did a full backup before he’d let me hit the “approve” button, but so far it hasn’t caused any disasters, knock wood.

@Anne Laurie:
I’m in a laptop-only household, so monitors are small for sports watching. Perhaps the thing to do is invest in a larger monitor rather than a TV? The streaming is still a problem, though.
@freelancer:
Have you tried using JustinTV for sports? I tried once, for some rugby match, but the streams kept vanishing. I figured whoever is watching for copyright violations or whatever was taking down the streams. Plus, with the time difference, it’s a pain to watch matches live. That’s where the DVR comes in really handy. If they’re recorded on that, you can watch them whenever. I haven’t found that works very well with JustinTV.
@Anne Laurie:
I’ve got reasonable quality broadband, I think. The plugged in speed is about twice the wireless, though. If you want to watch something streaming it makes a huge difference to be plugged in. I’m willing to pay for fast broadband because I use it so much. Thanks for the tips on Silverlight and the cable news networks. Interesting.

@Violet:
I am late to the conversation, but I’ll throw in my two cents.
I see you got a lot of advice, some of which went beyond just streaming Netflix. If you are trying to replace your whole cable-TV subscription with streaming stuff from the Internet, that is going to be somewhat involved, and you (or significant other, if any) are probably going to be disappointed about live sports (i.e., lack of).
To the simpler question of how to stream Netflix: You need a connection from the Internet to your TV. Many newer TVs have a network connection built in; the Roku box (about $100) handles it for other TVs. So you need to run a network cable from your cable modem (or router) to your TV. Depending on your TV (if direct connection), you might have to download a Netflix applet. (The Roku box takes care of this if you are using one.) Then you’re pretty much good to go.
This is a very simplified explanation, but it should be good enough to get your started in the right direction, depending on whether you just want to stream Netflix or want to get rid of cable TV and get everything from the Internet.
Violet
@Steeplejack:
Thank you, that’s very helpful. I think I’m sort of in the beginning stages of trying to figure out which way to go with this new TV decision. I don’t really care if I’ve got cable or not, so long as the things I want to watch are available when I want to watch them. And that’s where the challenge comes in. I understand that live sports are the real problem area for internet-only TV watching.
Of course my household has the added complication of wanting to watch non-US sports. I’ve spent the evening researching Tor and trying to figure out if a VPN can allow BBC online content to be viewed here. Exactly how that would fit into my new TV/cable/Roku, etc. decision is a bit baffling to me.

@Violet:
I forgot to add that there are now DVD players that are “streaming compatible” and will do much of what the Roku box will do, that is, act as an intermediary between your TV and the Internet connection.

Was late at work because the new district manager is coming for an all-day visit tomorrow and we had to get the Potemkin village finished for that. I don’t go in until 4:30 tomorrow, so I am hoping that I will miss all, or all but the last bit, of the DM’s visit. Serenity now.

@lamh32:
That was a great scene! I had completely forgotten it.

@Steeplejack: WTF Potemkin village? Ah. I just Googled it. Gotcha. Champers?

@Violet:
I can tell you from experience that Tor will not have enough bandwidth for streaming, plus it would be a violation of etiquette since the bandwidth is provided by volunteers. (And by various governments hanging out on exit nodes hoping to sniff something interesting. On the plus side, those government servers usually have very good connections so it does speed things up.)
However, a VPN will do what you want, assuming the BBC hasn’t blacklisted all ip’s coming from the VPN provider you chose. Which the BBC might do if they’re paranoid about unwashed Americans hopping onto their free UK-only streams, but that seems a bit unlikely.

No, again with a couple lowly beers tonight. I did have some brief jonesin’ for champagne earlier this evening, but I shook it off.

@Steeplejack: Ah, well. There’s always tomorrow!

In fairness to Valdes, van Persie did a great job of selling the idea that he was going to cross it.

@Cain: High speed line from San Diego to Vancouver BC. Yes, we could indeed make this shit happen. I’d hop on that bad boy in a heartbeat.

@Cain: Cool! I heard about that on the radio last weekend. I predict that little actual work will get done that day. Where is the rail line proposed, because anything must be better than I-5.
