SB 1070 should watch out. Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce has a new pet that he’s nurturing, a bill numbered SB 1611 that, if passed, would likely take SB 1070’s place as the symbol of harsh anti-immigrant legislation.
The bill, which the state senator called an “omnibus” immigration bill, the Arizona Capitol Times reported, would bar children from K-12 education if they couldn’t produce a U.S.-issued birth certificate or naturalization document. It would forbid undocumented immigrants from driving in the state or accessing public benefits. Folks who are caught driving would face a month of jail time and would have to turn over the car they’re driving.
Arizona might as well change its motto to “The Fuck Mexico State.”

I’m considering organizing the first BJ Commentator Trade Union in order to engage in collective bargaining with Cole over fair commentator rights. Clearly the problem of m_c isn’t getting through.
The poll found that 61% would oppose a law in their state similar to one being considered in Wisconsin, compared with 33% who would favor such a law.

@Nick L: So, anyone travelling to the US on the Visa Waiver program (Australia, pretty much all of Europe) would automatically be jailed for a month if they entered Arizona?
Awesome.

I’m loving the new argument Joke Line, Bobo, and others are now making: what do public employees need unions for? They work for the public, and the public always has their best interests at heart.
Along those lines, why does anyone ever plead not guilty. It’s “The People v. Joe Schmoe.” Shouldn’t you always trust “The People.”
It’s fucking Orwellian. I’m surprised a psuedo-intellectual like Bobo didn’t dress it up with Rousseau’s General Will. That would have blown the totebaggers’ minds.
@Nick L:
There are a couple of aircraft museums in AZ which I desperately want to visit before I get too damned old for road trips. Now that I have the means and the leisure time to make those visits I find that I cannot in good conscience visit AZ because of the asshattery going on there. I wonder how many others feel as I do.

I don’t really like the idea of boycotting an entire state, regardless of the asshattery (up to a certain point). Maybe it’s because I’m an Oklahoman, which is an even more ass-backwards state than Arizona, but keep in mind that even good people can be deluded by nonsensical race-baiting and the Culture Wars. Besides, even though Arizona has a particularly bad case of it, Crazy Racist White People Disorder is a nationwide epidemic, and a good number of states seek to emulate Arizona’s immigration laws.
Arizona’s an insane, corrupt, racist embarrassment. But so is America, and you might as well go to the aircraft museums.
The good news is, they tried to do that in California with Prop 187 and got slapped down by the courts, so it wouldn’t stand any longer than the “immigration” bill did.
This provision did crack me up, though:
Folks who are caught driving would face a month of jail time and would have to turn over the car they’re driving.
Yeah, that one will get dropped PDQ as soon as the legislators’ wives point out that they make their illegal nanny drive errands in the family car all the time.

We need a travel helper site that lists businesses/liberal enclaves in unwelcoming states that let people visit while minimizing their contributions to the asshats.
Police Superintendent Russell Gibson said there was “incredible carnage” throughout Christchurch’s CBD.
“Everywhere you look there is just absolute carnage,” he said.
“There are bodies littering the streets, they are trapped in cars, crushed under rubble … where they are clearly deceased, our focus has turned on the living.”
Gibson told Radio New Zealand that some people had been rescued without a scratch. But, “we’ve had other people who have had limbs amputated to get them out.”
Gibson said the rescue mission was a “painstaking job”. “We’re receiving knocks, people crying, people calling out to us.”
Good idea! To start, if you’re ever in Oklahoma City, stop by the Full Circle Bookstore, which remains the best bookstore I know of after having lived in Oklahoma, D.C., Massachusetts, and Ontario.

I am deeply saddened by the news that a second major earthquake in 6 months has struck Christchurch. On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I send our sincere condolences and sympathy to the people of New Zealand.
When the earthquake struck, American and Kiwi officials were in the middle of a meeting in Christchurch, discussing plans to further develop and expand the broad partnership between our nations.
The United States stands ready to provide assistance to the government of New Zealand and to the brave people of Christchurch. Our long history of friendship and mutual support in times of need is an example of our enduring bond.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible tragedy, especially the families of the victims, and with all the people of New Zealand.

@Nick L:
Have you ever visited the Elliot Bay Book Company in Seattle? Green Apple Books in San Francisco?
Heck, the University Bookstore in Seattle is the second-best bookstore there, and it’s better than anything I ever found in Boston.
@Dennis SGMM: you would most likely be on blue turf if you decided to visit the Pima Air Museum, that’s Gabby Gifford and Raul Grijalva turf. It’s gotten so bad that there are even minute rumblings of southern AZ wanting to secede from the state due to the insanity that is Maricopa County which has a stranglehold on all things political in the state.
I used to go there occasionally for bidnez and found it to be a shitehole–at least the Phoenix metro area–so have no problem not going there now. I’d probably still go to Grand Canyon since it’s a National Park and the wingers are doubtless still smarting about the gummint land grab.
Speaking of Arizona, I’m a little surprised she didn’t get a little luv on the sentencing:
been looking for an open thread here, because I know some of you are Chuck folks..
is it just me, or is it obvious that the new woman introduced last night is more than likely Volkov’s daughter by Chuck’s mother? she reminded me of Ellie. I think the casting was on purpose.
Oh, former Senator Evan Bayh and his wife, Susan, were in the middle of the Quake.
