Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We still have time to mess this up!

Consistently wrong since 2002

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

MoveOn has a great tool for finding solidarity rallies near you here.

I’ll be at the one in Manhattan. I’m not especially recognizable but if I hear anyone singing “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria”, I’ll know it’s another BJer and if so, drinks are on me.

Consider this an open thread.

Update. Organizing DC area BJers here! (The correct email is whydirt not why dot dirt.)

went out to the rally for labor in center city Philadelphia today; good crowd, rambunctious, feisty, and vowing it was a beginning of something bigger.

There’s a rally for public schools outside the board of ed Fri afternoon at 4:00, and another labor rally here Saturday.

    Go, support, mobilize.

I wanna give a shout out to my new buddy and BFF, Glenn Greenwald (Yes, you read correctly).

Last night, my dear friend Glenn went on MSNBC and hailed our President for his DOMA decision.

    This deserves enthusiastic, unqualified praise.

The cynic might say this is a play to the base, but that’s really not true because gays have been satisfied by the repeal of DADT, and DOMA is not an item high up on their list.

Still, right wing groups hate gays and especially gay marriage and they use it to drive up turnout.

So this action involves a fair amount of political risk, with very little political benefit.

This is momentous and will lead to removing a grave injustice.

In earlier times, Glenn has called me a “cultist”, a “North Korean Communist”, a “robot”, and a “Nazi”. No, really.

Yet, the Bible tells us “the wolf will lie down with the lamb, and a small boy will lead them”.

Yes, this gifted President, only 2 years and 2 months in office (time flies, doesn’t it), has united the Big Pragmatic Wolf and the Libertarian Lamb.

If only for this detente, President Obama has richly earned his Nobel Peace Prize.

    @NickM:

sorry, just meant that it’s not usually the center of anything huge. I love it, but we’re not exactly discussed morning noon and night on progressive radio or MSNBC generally. That’s really all I was talking about. The mood is terrific at the capital. Huge, loud crowds, lots of college kids as well as union members of course, huge anger at the assclown, but never a hint of violence. And the pizzas. That’s just such a funny thing. People calling in from all over, including Egypt, to have pizzas from this one place downtown delivered to demonstrators.

@jwb: You won’t hear me say anything negative about my comrade, Glenn.

I only wish FDL had Glenn’s class. Unlike Glenn, they engaged in Rick Santorum language, saying DOMA was a “bone”, which by transitive property makes the beneficiaries of the act, “dogs”.

There’s something sick about people who hate Obama so much that they not only denigrate any significant progressive accomplishment (like they did on DADT), but they also trash the underlying aggrieved party.

With so called progressives like that, who needs wingers.

…then again, he was advocating using the U.S. Military to go in and take out Gaddafi (as if we know where he is). Given how stupid that would be, I guess he could only bat .500 tonight.

I plan on covering the noon rally in Jefferson City on Saturday for Show Me Progress, weather permitting and the creek don’t rise.

Teabaggers are planning a rally in the same location at 10:30 am:

On this Saturday the 26th of February the communist organization moveon.org is organizing a rally in Jefferson City to support destroying our nation through deeper debt in the name of “protecting the working man”.

It is very, very important that you and I, the true lovers of freedom and liberty, step up to the plate and let our voices be heard! We are tired of having our government being hijacked by a small minority! We are tired of the middle class always having to pay for the unions’ demands of higher and higher wages, which they continue to demand even though those wages and benefits are 2 or 3 times higher than that of the private sector or fair market value! We want to STOP driving ourselves and our posterity into crushing debt just because some people refuse to tighten their belts!….

I thought accusing someone of being a communist went out with high button shoes. Evidently not for fascists.

@Little Boots: Union people have been sleeping over too this week (was it one of the Teamster leaders who said “last night we slept with you in the Capitol” and then kind of stammered?). And everyone cleans up after themselves. To protect the marble walls, only the proper tape is used. You see people with kids, people with dogs, people in their 90s, ex-Republicans. It’s incredibly distracting to have all this going on in my little city. It’s absolutely wonderful.

Though I’ve never set foot in WI, it seems Madison has long been a relatively enlightened liberal island for a long time.

Just reewatched a doc called Two DAys In October, from the Vietnam era, where Madison was one of the first towns, or college campuses of U. of Wi that had a serious confrontational war demonstration. And on the same day, there was a battle in Vietnam where a couple of companies of Army infantry got massacred in an ambush by the NVA. Based on the book They Marched Into Sunlight by DAvid Marranis

yes definitely, the old conservative joke: Madison is 60 square miles surrounded by reality. We’re Austin, Ann Arbor, whatever. the liberal enclave in the midst of a more conservative (but really purple) state. And one of our biggest 60’s activists, Paul Soglin, may well be our mayor again. He’ll be in a runoff election with our current mayor.
