@Elizabelle: I was thinking about watching it when I goggled the time. Apparently they do it during the day and someone wrote a blistering review on how lame the choices were so I went to bed.
I would vote for that, even though it isn’t as badass as the against-highway-traffic chase scene in To Live and Die in L.A.. What’s Up Doc brought me as near to peeing my pants as I’ve ever been since a toddler, and did so on three different occasions.
Ben Affleck is a mediocre actor, but he’s turning into quite a talented writer/director. His first film, Gone Baby Gone, is supposed to be terrific, and the lead actress in that got nominated for an Oscar the year it came out.

I’m so glad you mentioned the SF car chase in What’s Up, Doc? One of the only two times in my life I have LITERALLY (I mean it. Literally. Not figuratively.) fallen out of my seat in the movie theatre and basically sat on the floor screaming and sobbing with mirth. (FTR, the other was the first time I saw The (original) Producers, “Springtime for Hitler” scene.
Yes, this. That’s what I’m talking about. I’ll queue it up in my Netflix, and may now start commuting into Boston on the oncoming side of the MassPike.
Ronin’s a fine film; DeNiro’s been in a couple films that didn’t get the attention I thought they deserved. The Score was a fine, fine film, for example.
In that chase scene (the right one, I mean), when the guy in shotgun finally buckles up towards the end of it, well, it always cracks me up.
@Cat Lady: I really liked The Town, too, and I think Ben Affleck is still suffering the repercussions of dating Jennifer Lopez, why that movie didn’t get more accolades than Jeremy Renner’s performance.
Some frivolous observations: Purple, and red, seem to be the favored colors on the red carpet.
Nicole Kidman looks like a statue, does she have any blood in her?
Christian Bale for the win.

anyone gonna tune in to Jimmy Kimmel’s after Oscar special?
God bless car chases. The late great Bill Hickman spent most of his career as a stunt driver, and was involved in the car chase scenes from Bullitt, The French Connection and The Seven-Ups
There’s one scene in Good Will Hunting that will endear me to Ben Affleck forever, Gigli notwithstanding. It’s when he and Will are drinking beer after smashing the cinderblock building to pieces. Ben has a monologue where he tells Will that he’s his best friend, but how disappointed he’d be with Will if they were 50 and they were still hanging out at Foley Field. At the end of it he says in the most sincere way ever, “I don’t know much, but I know that”. I’ve used that line a thousand times. Ben was great in that movie.
76.
lamh32
@BGinCHI: Affleck hasn’t been taken seriously since the Bennifer days. I contend that whole relationship set Ben back careerwise and otherwise. Marrying Jennifer G and having tbhose adorable babies may have saved him a little. Still ain’t nobody forgetting “Bennifer”

I think Bullitt, The French Connection, and The Seven-Ups are all great movies in their own right and would still be great even without those outstanding car chases.
The French Connection also has an amazing musical score by Don Ellis, especially in the scene where Gene Hackman is tailing Fernando Rey into the NYC subway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkGWlRTJtDc

Sullivan: And he don’t say nuthing about working with Howard Kurtz.
The chance to be part of a whole new experiment in online and print journalism, in the Daily Beast and Newsweek adventure, is just too fascinating and exciting a challenge to pass up. And to work with media legends, Barry Diller and Tina Brown, and with the extraordinary businessmen Sidney Harman and Stephen Colvin, is the opportunity of a lifetime. Barry was the person who first introduced me to the Internet in the early 1990s, and we have remained friends ever since. Tina Brown needs no introduction, but to see her in action as we have discussed this new adventure over the past few weeks has been quite a revelation. …. I’ll also be contributing columns and essays to Newsweek.
… Now we will ride a new Beast into a new decade. Here’s hoping it’s as exhilarating as the last one.

I think the last time I read any of the formerly-major newsweeklies was… in a dentist’s office, when it was the only thing there. Don’t know if The Daily Beast is more relevant or gets more readers than The Atlantic. Not sure if I like Sully enough to follow him there. His coverage of the Arab uprising has been very good, but outside of that I find his schtick as annoyingly short on self-awareness as it is annoyingly long on self-regard.
I’ll still go to the Atlantic because that’s where Ta-Nahasi Coates is.
Anyone see the trailer for the new film by the guy who did The Triplets of Belleville?

It looks amazing. Not sure when it’s coming out.
I saw the actual movie–The Illusionist. Opened here in D.C. a few weeks ago (and may already be gone). It’s very good. The animation is gorgeous, sort of halfway between Belleville and Miyazaki, and the music is phenomenal. I’ve been wanting to pick up the soundtrack CD. The screenplay is an unproduced one left behind by Jacques Tati (M. Hulot’s Holiday). It’s not the feel-good movie of the year–the story is a little dark (“Magicians do not exist”)–but I highly recommend it.
I don’t know, but I think Hathaway could have handled it by herself.
Perhaps; she’s gorgeous and multitalented. Kinda being wasted so far.

Love the “late bloomer.” He wanted to write “The King’s Speech” years ago and somehow asked the Queen Mum if that was OK, and she asked him to wait until she had passed away. I don’t get the Shakespeare in Love hate: because it was a comedy? And Private Ryan was an oh-so-serious story of war and endurance? I thought Shakespeare was marvelously inventive, well-acted, and had a whip-snap smart, funny script.
I’m recording and rewinding the awards, and watching Hallmark channel’s “Golden Girls” marathon. So I”m watching the speeches and winners after the fact.
Film critic David Edelstein told Chris Matthews on Friday’s Hardball that Weinstein was doing major league politicking. He also said that the Social Network’s chances are hurt by the fact that the older voters of the Academy have no clue or understanding of social media.

The problem that Saving Private Ryan had is that another war film- The Thin Red Line– was also nominated that year. I think they split the vote between them, and either could have won if the other hadn’t been released the same year.
I think James Franco has given up. Maybe it’ll get better now.

LOVED “Despicable Me.”
Anyone see the trailer for the new film by the guy who did “The Triplettes of Belleville”?
It looks amazing. Not sure when it’s coming out.
stuckinred
@Elizabelle: I was thinking about watching it when I goggled the time. Apparently they do it during the day and someone wrote a blistering review on how lame the choices were so I went to bed.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Boudica:
I would vote for that, even though it isn’t as badass as the against-highway-traffic chase scene in To Live and Die in L.A.. What’s Up Doc brought me as near to peeing my pants as I’ve ever been since a toddler, and did so on three different occasions.
stuckinred
@Anne Laurie: Mac’s ain’t got no right clikers.
Mnemosyne
@BGinCHI:
Ben Affleck is a mediocre actor, but he’s turning into quite a talented writer/director. His first film, Gone Baby Gone, is supposed to be terrific, and the lead actress in that got nominated for an Oscar the year it came out.
JPL
I would love to see Jennifer Lawrence win for Winter’s Bones.
Although the movie was a B flick, I thought Annette Bening was better in Mother and Child.
For those who want to watch online you can go to Oscars.com

For Macs, it’s control-click. Or, you know, enter the 1990s and set your mouse up to do right-clicks in System Preferences.
BGinCHI
@Mnemosyne: It is good, and his brother is really excellent in it.
He was the guy who didn’t want to fight because “we got snacks” in Good Will Hunting.

Did ‘It’s Kind of a Funny Story’ get any nominations? I thought it was a terrific little movie and Zach Galifianakis gave an understated, moving performance.
suzanne
Natalie Portman’s dress is putting me to sleep.
BGinCHI
@Mnemosyne: You know who else right-clicked, don’t you?
stuckinred
@Mnemosyne: Amy Ryan, she was really good in the Wire. I also see she played Carolyn Cassady in a movie about Neal. Anyone see that?
Hmm control click works but I don’t use a mouse.
Jules
Who was that woman with my husband Robert Downey Jr?
Mnemosyne
@BGinCHI:
I’ve been ranting about it for a while. Now that the voting for the Annie awards is essentially rigged by Dreamworks, it would be nice for the other awards to throw everyone else a bone once in a while.
SiubhanDuinne
I’m so glad you mentioned the SF car chase in What’s Up, Doc? One of the only two times in my life I have LITERALLY (I mean it. Literally. Not figuratively.) fallen out of my seat in the movie theatre and basically sat on the floor screaming and sobbing with mirth. (FTR, the other was the first time I saw The (original) Producers, “Springtime for Hitler” scene.

Yes, this. That’s what I’m talking about. I’ll queue it up in my Netflix, and may now start commuting into Boston on the oncoming side of the MassPike.

Sorkin’s doing a series for HBO about cable news. I can hardly wait. I just love that walking&talking dialogue stuff he writes.

Black Swan
Toy Story 3
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
I’m not much a fan of “Kids”, but I did like Portman in Black Swan
The Dangerman
@Cat Lady:
Ronin’s a fine film; DeNiro’s been in a couple films that didn’t get the attention I thought they deserved. The Score was a fine, fine film, for example.
In that chase scene (the right one, I mean), when the guy in shotgun finally buckles up towards the end of it, well, it always cracks me up.
lamh32
@Elizabelle: agreed
Anonne
@Cat Lady: I really liked The Town, too, and I think Ben Affleck is still suffering the repercussions of dating Jennifer Lopez, why that movie didn’t get more accolades than Jeremy Renner’s performance.
Some frivolous observations: Purple, and red, seem to be the favored colors on the red carpet.
Nicole Kidman looks like a statue, does she have any blood in her?
Christian Bale for the win.
I need some alcohol.
lamh32
anyone gonna tune in to Jimmy Kimmel’s after Oscar special?
jk
@The Dangerman:
@Cat Lady:
God bless car chases. The late great Bill Hickman spent most of his career as a stunt driver, and was involved in the car chase scenes from Bullitt, The French Connection and The Seven-Ups
The Seven Ups has an amazing car chase

jl
@jk:
Why was there never an oscar for car cashes?
Cat Lady
@Mnemosyne:
Ben was great in that movie.
lamh32
@BGinCHI: Affleck hasn’t been taken seriously since the Bennifer days. I contend that whole relationship set Ben back careerwise and otherwise. Marrying Jennifer G and having tbhose adorable babies may have saved him a little. Still ain’t nobody forgetting “Bennifer”
jk
@jl:
I guess the closest thing to do it would be the Oscar for Best Editing.

When the fuck does this program start, anyhow? I’m very bored with the vapidity of red carpet “interviews.”
But Cate Blanchette and Gwyneth Paltrow both looked wonderful. And even Nicole Kidman — somewhere I read that she had undergone some really FAIL plastic surgery, but she looked fine to me.
WHAT. TIME. DO. THE. OSCARS. START??? Goshdarnit all to heck.

@The Dangerman: I want the 10 minutes of my life back that I spent watching that sucky first clip you posted. It was damn near everything that I hate about ‘action’ movies. Life is cheaper to action scene directors than it is to Scott Walker.

@Cat Lady:
@jl:

Liked Natalie Portman’s dress for Golden Globes way better. The pinkish strapless with red rose detail. Stunning.
Anybody ready to list slate of favorites? See who calls it as “the Academy” does?
Jamey
@lamh32: Not unless I’m too lazy to replace the dead batteries in my remote.
Elizabelle
Get to the show.
This prattling reminds us why TiVo was invented.
lamh32
My prediction for the telecast. It WILL go long. Anne Hathaway will be too effervescent and over-reach. James Franco WILL seem comatose before the show is over. Who thinks Franco is gonna make it halfway before “tweeking” up with some Red Bull or 4-Loko
lamh32
@Jamey:
ha!
stuckinred
The show will start when it is scheduled to start. Chill the fuck out.

I have only one thing that I want. I want Colin Firth to win for Best Actor, and I want Social Work to lose for Best Picture.
And just to be contrary, I would not be adverse to Portman losing or little Hailee Steinemen(sp?) to win over Melissa Leo. Although I love Melissa in “Homicide Life on the Streets”
stuckinred
@lamh32: Frisco speedball
Yutsano
@scandi: Wouldn’t you be? I mean cwap he’s just a kid trying to do a job he’s never trained for before. I have no issue if he blitzed up onstage.
And that is about as much as I’ll care about tonight.

What’s the music?

Nice start
lamh32
@Elizabelle:
I don’t know what I did before Tivo or Live capture DVR’ing. I never watch awards shows live anymore unless I really wanna see some person or other.
I hate hearing acceptance speeches because the majority of them are really just Ughh.
So thx to Tivo, I have my own special 5 min delay…and I love it.

Which will happen first at the Oscars: a speech of solidarity with the Middle East protests, or a speech of solidarity with the unions in Wisconsin?

OK: the opening was fun. Not original, but fun. BTW: why isn’t Alec Baldwin hosting? He did a good job, IIRC.

Moving the Daily Dish blog?
What gives?

@CaseyL: Apparently you missed the “younger demographic” line.

I want Morgan Freeman to narrate my dreams.

@efgoldman: That’s fucking offensive. I hope he’s alright.
Dave C
@LT:
Huh. I’m surprised Sullivan didn’t announce it on his site before it got tweeted elsewhere. I wonder where he’s going?
lamh32
@CaseyL: watching it now.
love Alec Baldwin
JPL
@LT: As much as I abhor his site, I do hope that he is not leaving because of his health.
Colin..whats his name always gives our Doug fresh material though.

I hope this guy Sullivan goes away so I don’t have to figure out who the fuck he is and why everybody seems to care so much. Same for the McMegan twit,
Elizabelle
Yeah. Hoping it is NOT a Sully health problem.
Be well. You are too irreplaceable. Honestly.
LT
@Dave C: I asked Green why sullivan hadn’t said this.
stuckinred
God the Titanic sucked so bad and they just keep pumpin it.
JPL
@jk: I only caught a second of it but Amy Poehler gave a shout out to the union members in Wisconsin on one of the morning talk shows.
Ija
@Elizabelle:
Maybe he feels he is not being paid enough. After all, he made a very big deal of the fact that half the traffic to the Atlantic Online was to his blog (that’s what he claimed anyway, who knows if it is even true).
Dave C
@Elizabelle:
Evidently it’s not a health problem. Ezra Klein says on Twitter that Sully is going to join the new Newsweek/Daily Beast site.

This is the part I dislike most: the thank-you speeches. They’re usually awkward at best, with the potential to go horrifyingly wrong. I wish the winners just said “Thanks” and put their I-want-to-thank part in Variety the next day or on an Oscarcast website or something.
Elizabelle
Working for Tina Brown and Howie Kurtz. Hmmm.
JPL
@Elizabelle: McMegan doesn’t calculate. She doesn’t even google enough.

It’s obviously about money. Newsweek probably offered him a shitload of them. I guess you can be a mediocre blogger and achieve greater and greater financial success. Meritocracy rules!

CaseyL
Melissa Leo! Is that an upset?

Melissa Leo is a fine actress but I want Kirk back..
Anonne
Wow. Bet they’re glad for that 5 second delay.

Whoa! What did they bleep?
stuckinred
There are some cold ass motherfuckers here that would be negative about a great actor like Douglas doing what he is doing.
lamh32
@CaseyL:
Naw Melissa has been the fav for a while. It was touch and go because of her “campaign” ad that some entertainment people thought was too over the top, but she’s won most of the major acting awards I believe.
Comrade Mary
Crap! I thought it was starting at 9. So what did I miss?

I think the last time I read any of the formerly-major newsweeklies was… in a dentist’s office, when it was the only thing there. Don’t know if The Daily Beast is more relevant or gets more readers than The Atlantic. Not sure if I like Sully enough to follow him there. His coverage of the Arab uprising has been very good, but outside of that I find his schtick as annoyingly short on self-awareness as it is annoyingly long on self-regard.
I’ll still go to the Atlantic because that’s where Ta-Nahasi Coates is.

@BGinCHI:

Holy freaking treacle Sullivan is moving to The Beast? I mean really? I really do not think that you people are understanding the significance of this. Sullivan is moving over to the dark side. WE HAVE WON!

Ughh, King’s Speech avalanche begins. How much of it is the Weinstein politicking? After all, they got fucking Shakespeare in Love to beat Saving Private Ryan. If you can do that, you can do anything, I guess.

@Elizabelle: too lazy to Google… did he overcome a stutter himself? Cheers to all late bloomers!

Love the “late bloomer.” He wanted to write “The King’s Speech” years ago and somehow asked the Queen Mum if that was OK, and she asked him to wait until she had passed away. A much longer wait than he must have expected, but nice to see a classy person rewarded in Hollywood, where people his age are supposed to be seen and not heard.
ETA: He did overcome a severe stammer.
CaseyL
@jk: I didn’t mind him at the Golden Globes because it’s the Golden Globes. The Oscars aren’t the right venue for his very funny, but very abusive, routine. IMO.

I don’t get the Shakespeare in Love hate: because it was a comedy? And Private Ryan was an oh-so-serious story of war and endurance? I thought Shakespeare was marvelously inventive, well-acted, and had a whip-snap smart, funny script.

Oh, I hope that Charlie Sheen line was ad libbed!
Yutsano
@Comrade Mary: I always thought that line was attributed to Alice Roosevelt, but I digress. Read that on a FOX Sports website, so take that with whatever caveats you desire.
