Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

We still have time to mess this up!

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Trump makes a mockery of the legal system and cowardly judges just sit back and let him.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Saw five of the ten best pic noms:

    True Grit
    Winter’s Bone
    Social Network
    King’s Speech
    The Kids Are Alright

Liked the King’s Speech a lot, but I think The Social Network is the best picture. Sorkin and Fincher needs to make more movies together.

I cannot fathom the attention given “The Kids are Alright.”

Thinking it’s Hollywood falling over itself for making a mainstream lesbian film.
Starring two (apparently) straight actresses. It was not that good a flick.

Annette Bening is a terrific address, but the role is just not the caliber of the others nominated.

I’m ashamed to say how many times I’ve seen The King’s Speech. I love it and hope it wins big tonight, but I fear all the hype and expectations may have jinxed it.

That said — and only because of TKS — I’m watching the Oscars for the first time in many years. And I would just like to say here, for the record, there is *no stupider-sounding question in the world* than “Who are you wearing?”

I loved The Town, but it didn’t get nominated. Car chases through city streets aren’t done enough. Bullitt and The French Connection are two of my favorite movies because of that, and I hope this movie takes its place with those. Discovered a show on Animal Planet last night called “Must Love Cats.” Fun. I am still extremely annoyed that there were 10 Best Picture nominees but only 3 Best Animated Film nominees. That’s just bullshit. The Academy has a stupid rule saying that the number of Animated Film nominees depends on the number of animated films that are released during the year, but it really highlights the lack of respect the Academy has for animation when three times more live action movies are nominated.

No, I’m not only saying this because I work for the mouse. I’d be pissed either way, because this was a GREAT year for animated features and all of those other filmmakers got hosed by the Academy’s lack of respect for animation.

There’s one scene in Good Will Hunting that will endear me to Ben Affleck forever, Gigli notwithstanding. It’s when he and Will are drinking beer after smashing the cinderblock building to pieces. Ben has a monologue where he tells Will that he’s his best friend, but how disappointed he’d be with Will if they were 50 and they were still hanging out at Foley Field. At the end of it he says in the most sincere way ever, “I don’t know much, but I know that”. I’ve used that line a thousand times. Ben was great in that movie.

I think Bullitt, The French Connection, and The Seven-Ups are all great movies in their own right and would still be great even without those outstanding car chases.

The French Connection also has an amazing musical score by Don Ellis, especially in the scene where Gene Hackman is tailing Fernando Rey into the NYC subway.

And to work with media legends, Barry Diller and Tina Brown, and with the extraordinary businessmen Sidney Harman and Stephen Colvin, is the opportunity of a lifetime. Barry was the person who first introduced me to the Internet in the early 1990s, and we have remained friends ever since. Tina Brown needs no introduction, but to see her in action as we have discussed this new adventure over the past few weeks has been quite a revelation. …. I think the last time I read any of the formerly-major newsweeklies was… in a dentist’s office, when it was the only thing there. Don’t know if The Daily Beast is more relevant or gets more readers than The Atlantic. Not sure if I like Sully enough to follow him there. His coverage of the Arab uprising has been very good, but outside of that I find his schtick as annoyingly short on self-awareness as it is annoyingly long on self-regard.

I’ll still go to the Atlantic because that’s where Ta-Nahasi Coates is.

Anyone see the trailer for the new film by the guy who did The Triplets of Belleville?
    __
It looks amazing. Not sure when it’s coming out.

I saw the actual movie–The Illusionist. Opened here in D.C. a few weeks ago (and may already be gone). It’s very good. The animation is gorgeous, sort of halfway between Belleville and Miyazaki, and the music is phenomenal. I’ve been wanting to pick up the soundtrack CD. The screenplay is an unproduced one left behind by Jacques Tati (M. Hulot’s Holiday). It’s not the feel-good movie of the year–the story is a little dark (“Magicians do not exist”)–but I highly recommend it.

Love the “late bloomer.” He wanted to write “The King’s Speech” years ago and somehow asked the Queen Mum if that was OK, and she asked him to wait until she had passed away. A much longer wait than he must have expected, but nice to see a classy person rewarded in Hollywood, where people his age are supposed to be seen and not heard.
