Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

I really should read my own blog.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Let there be snark.

Second rate reporter says what?

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

How stupid are these people?

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

When we show up, we win.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Keep phoning your State Delegate. If his latest statement is any sign, team Arora got more feedback than they expected from his weird 180 over marriage equality. Go nudge him in the right direction.

Not from the Annapolis area? Phone your own Rep. It’s good exercise. If nothing else tell them to get the damn potholes fixed.

Arora says he’ll vote for it now:

This is weird, Sam was a friend of mine in high school, and it is actually distressing seeing an old friend A) start waffling on something I’m certain he’d have supported unequivocally back when I knew him and B) get pilloried (rightfully) by people I respect for it. I’m not in his district any more (or even in the same state) but I’m seriously thinking of calling anyway. I already talked to my mother about giving him a call (she is still a constituent) and I’ve got pull with at least three other voters in his district who can call as well.

He’s not actually from Annapolis. He represents Maryland’s 19th district which includes part of Montgomery County, I believe.

Arora is a rep. for Montgomery County*, the last county in Maryland where anyone with half an ounce of sense would try a stunt like this.

Contact info for Maryland State Delegates by district.

    *Annapolis is in Anne Arundel

I did indeed, though I dropped out senior year. Actually my most commonly used internet handle (this one) comes from my nickname there.

I have emailed my delegates (All Democrats) and asked them to support the bill. I assume they would support the bill, but assumptions can be dangerous.

@Thoughtful Black Co-Citizen: You don’t think someone from the red northern tier or Southern MD would try that? Of course, they’d never be for it in the first place.

Indeed. On more than one occasion I missed my turn driving to school in the morning. If you were ever bothered by the noise from a very loud black Datsun pickup truck pulling in there, you have my apologies.

@Poopyman: Yes, that’s the problem. One Term Arora openly courted the gay and lesbian vote so all his attack du vapors did was cause a lot of alarm and dismay.

I’ve never met Arora himself, but I know friends of his. They’re all more than a little perplexed, and their most charitable theory is that he’s getting hammered by teabaggers calling his office.

I know that Equality Maryland is organizing phone banks, so if you have an hour to spare, it may be worthwhile volunteering with them. Arora’s district is more conservative than most of Montgomery County, but his stance on this issue still makes him highly vulnerable.

@Bulworth: Assuming you’re using Windows, right click on the “Edit” button and choose “Open New Tab” or “Open New Window”. Sucks, but that’s the workaround.

If you’re not using Windows, well, ya got me there.

It also works on Macs, assuming you’re using a two-button mouse and have it set up for right click = control click. Or just control click.

I’m in his district and I sent him an e-mail telling him he was in danger of losing 3 votes, me, my husband and my gay son. Maybe that played a small part in his decision to vote for the bill that he has previously said he would support.

I of course didn’t tell him that my son thinks that if it passes I will start pressuring him to get married. Of course I won’t, but he’s almost thirty and unattached (and quite handsome). A mother does worry.
