Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

We still have time to mess this up!

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

He really is that stupid.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

“Look, it’s not against the rules anywhere, but a black woman with power was dating and there has to be something wrong with that.”

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Anybody seen either The Adjustment Bureau or Beastly yet? Your thoughts?

I admit to a great fondness for fairy tale films — my all-time favorites being Fantasia and ET .

“The Adjustment Bureau” was in the category of a not unpleasant way to spend a couple of hours, but not much more than that. Half-baked metaphysical mumbo-jumbo about free will, etc., but I do love to behold the lovely Emily Blunt, and NYC has never looked so good.

Just the trailers. It looks like Beastly may work for its intended market (young teenage girls) but be pretty horribly awful for everyone else. Also, I’m not sure bald, washboard abs, and artsy (if large and oddly placed) tattoos really qualifies as “beastly” these days.

And the fresh hell that is Tennessee continues:

TN Republicans want to allow direct corporate donations

Republican lawmakers are trying to reshape Tennessee’s campaign finance laws to allow corporations to give directly to candidates and lift the individual giving cap for big donors.
    __
A measure that overhauls Tennessee’s campaign finance laws would abolish a longstanding ban on donations from companies, in a move that supporters say would put businesses on an equal footing with labor unions.

Let me warn your good Peeps … Tennessee is the petri dish of wingnutty legislation. I am sure similar bills (no doubt crafted at some ALEC meeting) will be coming to a state near you soon….

The longer Cole and the frontpagers wait to come out with some sort of statement, the more glibertarian grifter posts EDK will make at Forbes and the LoOG. It isn’t going to get any easier.
And some of the local balloon juice citizenry are beginning to see through the grift.
    Dig Cornerstone.

EDK was a scam from the beginning. Anyone who can’t see that needs to take a step back and reevaluate. Cole traded him front page space in return for repeatable clicks.
I for one am deeply suspicious of his contorted “conversion”, and his mile a minute change of direction once he decided that would work best for him.

    Oh whaaaaah ….

“It’s a case of identity theft,” Mr. Koch said of the call in which the liberal blogger got through to Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, drew him out about his plans to weaken unions and posted a recording of the call on the Internet, making news and embarrassing the governor. Mr. Koch, whose company, Koch Industries, had given major campaign support to Governor Walker, among other conservative candidates and causes, added, “I didn’t even know his name before this brouhaha erupted.”
    __
Mr. Koch joked that the call could cause him problems. “I was thinking to myself, ‘My God, if I called up a senator or a congressman to discuss something with them, and they heard ‘David Koch is on the line,’ they’d immediately say, ‘That’s that fraud again — tell him to get lost!’ ” he said with a laugh.

@Sarah, Proud and Tall: That was a problem my riding buddy Young Brigham had. Lack of punctuation. So one day we were trailing cows from Daniels to the Hole and this dumb lead cow started to go the wrong way.
Now cows, they will follow the lead heifer anywhere, its like an alpha cow.
So Young Brigham he was hollering and swinging his rope, but she wouldn’t turn.
So by way of punctuating his message he swung down and picked up a rock and chucked it at her.
It hit her right between the eyes and she dropped dead in her tracks!
And the rest of the cows finally turned.
It was the most amazing use of punctuation I had ever seen.

I saw The Adjustment Bureau. From what I understand, it bears only a passing resemblance to the PKD story which, apparently, involved a mysterious ‘Bureau’ manipulating things behind the scenes to decrease the chance of nuclear war with the Soviets. The director/screenwriter grafted a romance onto Dick’s basic plot; how well that works depends partly on how much you like Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.

@soonergrunt: Applied social justice, co-authored by Barak Black Obama and Matoko-chan.
And achieved how? How to put theory into practice? Obama has pointed the way. Do you know the term bricolage?
It means also to utilize existing structures for a new purpose, or to canabilize existing structure to make something new.
Like Obama has done with junior colleges and the early graduation program.
You see…not everyone needs a 4-year college degree. But trade school is lower social capital. So how do you make trade school equivalent in social capital to a 4year college degree?
By letting students that want to graduate a year early, get 2 years of vo-tech and be making money 2 years before the college preptards even graduate a 4 year program program.
Obama is bricolaging junior colleges into cool vo-tech schools….trade schools.
Its pretty genius. That is an example of bricolaging an existing educational structure—junior colleges.
So I would look for ways to bricolage existing structures to bootstrap parents.
Ways to bricolage social justice. ;)
The existing structures in the American system were actually set up for free market capitalism, supported by White Patriarchy Social Cohesion Model. So those structures need to be retooled or bricolaged or cannibalized for parts to support regulated market capitialism and Social Democracy Cohesion Model.
WPSCM crashed when blacks and women got the vote. Social Democracy has been evolving ever since.
Social Democracy Cohesion Model is the delivery vector for social justice, where free market capitialism is the delivery vector for survival of the greediest.

    @Ailuridae: I would appreciate advice.
How can I make this any more clear and cogent than fisking him?
Behold how a glibertarian turns Heckman’s social justice for early childhood poverty premise into More Glorious Free Market Solutions.

Education is an investment, and it pays off in the long run. The more money we spend on education now, the less we spend on prisons later. A more educated populace makes more money, uses fewer government services, and pays more taxes. They also invest their money in private companies, buy more goods, and spend more money overall. Every dollar spent on education translates into two dollars of savings in prison costs alone [pdf].
    __
It’s time to make universal pre-K education a reality. We can start small, working from the poor neighborhoods out. We could allow private preschools to become charters, and we could fund the creation of public preschools as well. The money spent now would be a generational stimulus, saving our kids billions of dollars down the road. It’s a shame the political will for this sort of investment is simply nonexistent.

“Fix the schools” is a free market solution. That can simply never work, because the problem is parental SES and parental involvement.
And the only fix for those problems is social justice.

  98. 98.

    matoko_chan

    I fisked him here too.
“Fixing” the “teacher problem” can empirically do nothing to fix the education problem. Because the education problem is the parent problem, parental SES and parental involvement.
EDKs favorable links all go to the glibertarian nation at TAS. Manzi and Millman. ALL those guys talk about is free market solutions. I have known them for years.
Doing anything about teachers to reform education is EXACTLY like bailing out banks to create jobs. There is no linear relationship.
The glibertarian wankstahs all know this. They never acknowledge it, they just keep spinning. It is what they do.
I loathe EDK for the same reason I loathe Douthat. They cloak anti-empirical free market solutions in a fog of pretty language and fake reasonableness in the name of “discussion”. EDK developed a formula here.
EDK used his formula of “run a conservative meme up the flagpole, get ass kicked in comments, rinse, repeat” until he hit pay dirt with the unions and the teachers.
So now he can front as a “reasonable libertarian/liberal-tarian” and churn out free market chum larded with a few bits of BJ sanity at the Forbes bullshit mill.
That would be BJ sanity that he stole from you guys. :)
You see ……it doesnt come natural to EDK. That is why is was so incredibly hard for him to give up on fetus=slave. He doesnt really see anything wrong with it.
    For example…..

    Quote for the day
    by E.D. Kain
    __
“And understand this: If American workers are being denied their right to organize and collectively bargain when I’m in the White House, I’ll put on a put on a comfortable pair of shoes myself. I’ll walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States.” ~ Barack Obama in 2007 on the campaign trail.
    __
Guess that means the President is headed for Wisconsin, folks.

Glibertarian playbook page 21….snark about something Obama once said. Make it about Obama.
You see…..EDK doesnt have any integrity of his own….so he had to borrow some from you….long enough to a get a column at Forbes.
Forbes has to have “reasonable” libertarians to give cover to the endless stream of trickle-down-free-market-innovation-supply-side wankery that they pump out.
And EDK is just the ticket.

I was half-expecting a sort of Three Days of the Condor-meets-The International-meets-Wanted, so was pleasantly surprised to find an adult movie that does encourage you to think about the nature of free will. Is it a great movie? I don’t think so. Is it better than 95% of the drivel playing at the Octoplex? Absolutely. Real chemistry betwixt Mr. Damon and Ms. Blunt. Nice supporting cast – and I like the fact that the members of the adjustment bureau weren’t all cut from the same cloth.

Wife and I saw “Beastly” today and we both thought it was a well-done retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story. Not excellent, but worth the admission and a pleasant enough way to spend part of the afternoon. We’re both in our 50s and generally avoid the teen movies. The young female lead is cute as a button, but the “beast” is a little wooden. Supporting cast does a good job.
