Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

The willow is too close to the house.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Second rate reporter says what?

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

No one could have predicted…

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

You cannot shame the shameless.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

True, this is pandering. But I like the Louis Wain influence around the 0:34 mark…

Some thirty years ago, there was a cat fancier in Ohio who wanted to refine, and register, a line of polydactyl Maine coons that would breed true. Since the world remains in the hands of us hairless primates, I have to assume her experiment remains a work in progress.

There are reports that three of Gaddafi’s private planes (he has 5 apparently) have left Lybia for Cairo, Athens and Vienna respectively. No indication of who is on board though.

I love this commercial. The cat-thumb on the door latch truly is the beginning of the end for humanity, although I wouldn’t mind if my fur-child learned to use a nail file instead of the bedroom chair for his claw maintenance.

Absolutely great. I like the cat reading The Art of Military Strategy. Heh, they will truly become our overlords once they get opposable thumbs. Cole better watch out.

Since I live with a poly-dactyl, I think that establishing a whole line of them would be so cool!

This is Mojii. He is about 15 or 16 years old. He has been aging lately. When he goes, I’m going to miss those big feet.

    from the wiki

Whereas he had been a mild-mannered and trusting man, he became hostile and suspicious, particularly towards his sisters. He claimed that the flickering of the cinema screen had robbed the electricity from their brains. He began wandering the streets at night, rearranging furniture within the house, and spent long periods locked in his room writing incoherently

this man would have pwned the internets on so many levels. kinda makes you wonder who else in history should have had an internets. and, for those who are so inclined, who shouldn’t have.

I knew Morris the cat and his owners back in the day. I wonder if this kitty is as stoned?

England ‘healthier than the US’ (BBC)

Public health experts suggested more generous holiday entitlements and more favourable working conditions in the UK might also play a part.

A spokesperson from the Department of Health said: “The NHS offers care free to all at the point of use and based on need.

“Whilst in some areas our outcomes may be favourable compared with those in the US, we are still clear that we have a long way to go before we achieve outcomes comparable with the best performing health systems.

“That is exactly why we are modernising the NHS.”

Cradle to the grave, free healthcare, that costs less in terms of GDP, might be a good way for the US to shrink it’s deficit.

    @Jack Bauer:

“That is exactly why we are modernising the NHS.”

Unfortunately, they’re cutting it to the bone and part-privatizing it.

A survey of 800 family doctors, by the Nuffield Trust health thinktank, found that 71% expect the switch to GP-led commissioning of healthcare will force new consortiums of doctors to focus on controlling their costs, which will lead to growing restrictions on treatments the NHS can provide, limit the number and type of procedures patients can have, and offer less choice.

    Sound familiar? Fucking Tories.

Polydactyl cats are thriving in central upstate New York. It’s frankly more surprising to meet a cat there that does NOT have seven toes on one paw.

I once had a cat who would remind me that she wanted to be fed by grabbing (paw-and-thumb) the cuff of my pant leg and tugging on it. Kinda scary, in retrospect.

A folk singer of my acquaintance breeds cats for intelligence as well as polydactyly. There is (naturally) a song about it, which, alas, does not appear to be online: “Cats With Thumbs,” sung to the tune of “Cows With Guns.”

Tim Curry voiceover combined with brilliant concept.

(I’m sure they got the idea from the Cheezburger site, which has cats lamenting their lack of opposable thumbs as an ongoing theme.)
