Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

FFS people, this was a good thing. take the win.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself. We’re allowed to grow past that.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Everybody saw this coming.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

I conferred with the team and they all agree – still not tired of winning!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Thursday Morning Rallies in WI

FacebookTweetEmail

Just in case any readers see this in time, the SEIU (#workers-rights) will be rallying in Wisconsin tomorrow:

Tomorrow morning, the State Assembly will gather and 8:00 a.m. Central to vote and we’ll be coming together inside and outside the Capitol at that time. In fact, thousands of people are already there right now.
__
There are also a number of rallies taking place across the state at 9:00 a.m. (CT) and recall canvasses happening throughout the day…

List of rally sites here.

Anybody with information on rallies in support in other states, put a link in the comments.

I didn’t see anyone post it in the other thread, but I thought this Alternet article was interesting:

The Wisconsin Uprising is a Bottom-Up Movement — Should We Hope DC Leaders Don’t Get In the Way?

Well now that they pulled the trigger the next step is recall. I think the Wisconsin GOP gravely underestimates how pissed off folks are. Any bets on how long Scotty Boy stays in office?

@Yutsano: A year. He can’t be recalled before then.

What the rethugs are relying on is that amurikans will have a still shorter memory than they did in 2010. Even now scotty boy’s unfavorability numbers hasn’t crossed 50%, has it ?

@Mnemosyne: I got to have a long talk last weekend with a friend in Madison, turns out that he’s been a protest marshal. One of his most interesting comments is that the unions haven’t quite grasped that while their organizing experience is useful and much appreciated, this is a grassroots protest, not a union protest. (And he’s a union member.)

@Martin: At my workplace the focus is more on whether the Congress can pass a damn budget. I get the feeling there won’t be any more CRs if the AOS has his druthers. But we are a union shop, so I bet this is at least being ruminated about.

Apparently the Governor and key Republicans are going to be in D.C. tomorrow.

Hey kids! Do you live the the DC area and are unable to get to Madison, WI. to be a part of the whirlwind that Koch-sucking manwhore Scott Walker and his Republican pals will be reaping on Thursday? Well, good news! While the state of Wisconsin is plunged into a civil war between working people and couch-bound low information Fox news viewers, the guys who started the fire will taking a day trip to our nation’s capitol to pick up checks for services rendered to the wealthiest 1%. And you can meet them!

    “Koch-sucking manwhore” *snicker*

I really hope Michael Moore doesn’t become “the face” of the WI protests. I kind of wish he’d stayed out of it. If this is seen as a “liberal” issue, the public will be less supportive overall. If the workers lose public support, this thing could be over for good. That’s just how things go nowadays.

    March 10, 2011 at 8:11 am

@asiangrrlMN: Actually, about two years. The recall process can’t /begin/ until he’s been in office for a year, and he took office January 3, 2011. Then there’s a window of 60 days in which to collect petitions. After that the petitions are reviewed, and if either party wishes the results of the review can be challenged. That, by the way, means time in court — recall Franken’s election for a feel of how that can progress. Once the review is complete and enough signers are confirmed, an election date is set that must allow time for anyone running to file and campaign.

My expectation is that Wisconsin voters will vote for their governor on the general election ballot in November of 2012. The new governor will take office when the votes are certified and all challenges laid to rest.

Personally, I think Maddow has been on fire the last few nights, including her interview with Michael Moore.

Seriously, people are “concerned” that this movement may some how be conflated with “liberalism” or Moore (a man associated with taking on rich people since 1989, ).

I’m sorry, liberalism has been associated with labor, since, oh, I don’t, …forever (not saying that our “liberal” politicians have performed particularly well with regards to “labor”, but the 14 Democratic State Senators (oh noes, anyone but democrats!) seem to be holding the fort as best they can). Good luck keeping “liberal issues” out of things considering the numerous liberals who apparently thought that this was a “liberal issue” worth fighting for…

Tennessee is facing one of these bills as well. Today there will be a rally at the public square in Lebanon in Wilson County outside of Nashville’

    Details:

Wilson County teachers are to organize on the Public Square in Lebanon Thursday afternoon asking citizens to contact their elected officials and encourage them to vote in opposition to education bills concerning the collective bargaining rights of teachers and tenure.
    __
The rally will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, to get teachers together before Wilson County Schools start spring break this weekend. Cathey Roberts, a second grade teacher at Tuckers Crossroads Elementary, is helping organize the event.

I’m sure there will be other rallies in Tennessee, we had 3,000 people show up at the state capitol last weekend in the POURING RAIN. People are pissed off.

Two things Wisconsin voters ought to consider are getting rid of the 3/5ths quorum requirement, and also passing a law making it a crime for Republicans to leave the state to evade votes they are going to lose. *They* have to be held accountable and deal with the fact that elections have consequences, and *we* need to make sure this tactic doesn’t get turned around and used on us.

For the first time last night, I donated to an Actblue page,
    for the Wisconsin Democratic party.

Those Wisconsin D’s need to keep the less-visible Assembly members who voted for this in their sights, too. Flipping the Senate back seems more easily doable to me.

And now that the union issue has been defined as “non-fiscal,” only a simple majority of the Senate’s voting members is needed to roll it back.

@Odie Hugh Manatee: I will say that I think people should stop saying cocksucker like it’s a bad thing. Seriously. Saying someone who sucks cock is like Walker is pretty insulting to anyone who enjoys sucking cock. I’m just sayin’. (This isn’t directed to you so much as it’s piggy-backing on your comment).

I will also say that for the most part, the term is only used as a slur against other men, which adds homophobic to sexist.

Language geek moment – agreed with you, and certainly it’s got a series of antecedents that were used also principally against men. Among all the various insults in the arsenal, that is one that I do my best to avoid.

I think in this case the idea behind the insult is not so much calling Scott Walker gay as calling him so servicial to the Kochs he might as well be fellating them. That, too, would be a usage of the insult with a rich and storied history, going all the way back to Roman blame poetry.

    /languagegeek

Sorry. I’m writing about this for a thesis. Practice is necessary.

What a travesty. Talk about suicide politics… The Kock brothers don’t have enough money that they’d be willing to spend to counter the storm that is going to be Wisconsin 2012. Talk about overreach… Walker’s brown nosing is only going to take away his support since most folks don’t support union busting. They also don’t appear to support giving tax breaks to the rich and to business and then cutting the average blokes salary to give that money to the rich benefactors of the right wing…

@asiangrrlMN: “Saying someone who sucks cock is like Walker is pretty insulting to anyone who enjoys sucking cock. I’m just sayin’.”

    This. Just this.

As an alternative, one that has the advantage of fitting the way those annoying brothers actually pronounce their surname, I suggest…

    Koch-snorting.

    You’re welcome.
