Anybody got plans for the weekend that don’t involve watching college basketball?
__
Reminder: This week’s NIXONLAND book discussion, Sunday afternoon 4pm EDT, chapters 13-15 (“Violence”, “From Miami to the Siege of Chicago”, and “Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1968”). Bring your bad memories…

Why should I watch college basketball?
Weekend plans: Go take some walks, go to a decent restaurant, write awesome stuff, dread Monday.

The listener base here in Western Montana went all gleeful when KUFM finally picked up “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.” I’ve only listened to it a couple of times, but so far I really hate it. It’s everything people accuse John Stewart of: smug, full of lame attempts to stay above the fray by poking fun of “both sides,” and yet completely innocuous.

I guess once they got people repeating the line that “carbon dioxide promotes plant growth,” something like this was probably inevitable.

I’m planning on going down to Pace U to the “Left Forum.” But I might change my mind. I’m trying to move a bit beyond tepid mainstream liberalism, and drag my partner along with me. But every time I go to an event offering panel discussion, I remember why I don’t go to such events.

Having our wedding portrait taken by Cecil Williams (google him-he’s pretty cool). The fiance and I were widiwed within a year of one another. Gonna give it another shot.

On reflection, I believe all of my weekend plans do not involve watching basketball. (That’s the one with the tall guys and the hoops, right?)

Oh, boo; I’m going to miss book club this week. Fun reason; reading an excerpt from a friend’s very beautiful play, but I’m sorry to miss the virtual chat.

gonna go see the east coast’s finest all-girl AC/DC cover band : Backseat Confidential @ the Lincoln Theater, tonight.

See I took the post below to be an open thread, and posted this stuff below. I R embarassed nao.
You know the more I think about it the more the Libya no fly zone looks less like Iraq and more like Yugoslavia. From the broad based UN sanctioned coalition to the pledge for no ground troops, to the lesser-of-two-evils allied factions on the ground, the whole thing looks like some kind of un-holy combination of what we did in Bosnia and Kosovo. It’s even starting around the same time as Allied Force. I eagerly await the carping from congressional Republicans about how the several hundred troops we commit to the post conflict UN stabilization force (LFOR?) in a few months is far worse than defeat (while simultaneously telling us how we should have kept 100,000 in Iraq indefinitely).

Going to tidy up the front garden. We are now well enough into Spring that I should be able to cut back all the dead perennial stems and take the blanket of leaves off the flower beds. It is always exciting to see the sprouts coming up under the leaves. It will be a weekend of “I don’t rememeber planting that” I am sure.
Other than that, Laundry, housework, the usual deal. Plus I have a metric ton of stuff to list on e-bay if I am ever going to raise the funds for my speeding ticket court costs. (I know, I know as a paralegal I should know better).

I bought eight chickens at the market on sale. The plan is to process them, boil the bones for stock, freeze the meat and make 3 types of soup, 7 gallons each. The freezer is going to be hit pretty hard this weekend. College basketball is for people who aren’t good enough to keep up with hockey.

I don’t have a normal weekend, I do 4×10 shifts and get Thursday, Friday, Saturday off. Been incredibly busy with spring cleanup in the yard and since the snow’s off my pile of wood, I broke out the chainsaw and axe and have begun stocking up wood for next winter. Flashed the joint between the roof over the new 3 season room and the old back wall of the house. I ran out of time when I finished the room in December so all I had there was heavy caulk and it did leak a bit. Tomorrow, gonna cut more wood, get the lawnmower running. Right now, my 51 year old back hurts a bit and I think I’m just gonna pour a scotch, open a Yuengling and turn up http://gdradio.net

I’m only listening to the games at work currently…does that count as not watching Basketball?

I have a decent collection of various cookware, but do not own enough skillets or burners to make this plan feasible.
I did not get enough sleep last night, so I am taking things too literally. Luckily I kept mostly offline, as pretty much all news these days is making me crazy.(-ier?)

Just checked Sullivan’s blog. I had taken a break from reading political blogs for a week. Why is he so hysterical, calling Obama imperial and what not? What did I miss? Did Obama disband the Congress and the Senate and crown himself the king? Sullivan seems to be falling out of love with Obama.

I need to finish the high voltage power supply for the deuteron linear accelerator Ion gun that will be used to mfg. the tritium I need for a thermo-nuclear fusion experiment in my back den … and also do some tar work on my roof (not good to have water leak onto 50 KeV high voltage capacitors – I think in that order … which reminds me, I need to get to Radio shack tonight for some parts …

Is anyone familiar with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_equivalent_dose
Saw it on a FARK thread, it’s for real too. Radiation scares me and I love bananas too.
We won a minor victory this week when our local township announced they would get baseline water testing done before another Marcellus well is drilled above the town’s water inlet. My wife and I fought like hell to get this done. Last well they drilled and fracked was less than a mile directly uphill from the inlet.
The NY Times article musta scared some sense into them.

It looks to be a housecleaning weekend — laundry, vacuum, stuff like that. It’s supposed to be cooler than today (which was beautiful). Trees are starting to bud.
I may also rewrite the resume (again). Any suggestions about web sites about resume writing, BJ hive mind?

Ann Coulter is clearly jealous that she has been replaced by Sarah Palin as America’s Right Wing Top Model Imbecile. What else could explain her popping up to declare that radiation is good for you?
FlipYrWhig
@schrodinger’s cat: Andrew Sullivan is one of those people in decadent enclaves on the coasts who may well mount a fifth column.
FlipYrWhig
@schrodinger’s cat: The opposite. Hysterically pro-war. He’s like an addict who finally kicks the habit and now can’t talk about anything other than his recovery.
Suffern ACE
@schrodinger’s cat: Sullivan is angry because he feels that war has been declared on Libya without the consent of Congress or much debate for unclear reasons, without a plan, without much of of idea of the objective. Others may feel differently. They may feel that war hasn’t been declared. Or that only acts of war have been authorized but not actual war. Or that humanitarian interests are good. Or that ground troops will be provided by other people, so that’s o.k. or the fact that Brittan and France have been leading the call to arms makes this somehow different. Or that the oil means that there is a national economic interest. Or that Qadaffi is a former state sponsor of terrorism so its o.k. to take him out. Lots of things worth talking about and disagreeing with.
The Imperial part of Sullivan’s beef is that he feels that Congress should have some say in this matter and that because they aren’t saying much or voting on much, Obama is behaving like an emperor. Your interpretation of events may differ.

Today my outdoor thermometer reached 80 and tomorrow is suppose to be a repeat. I’ve been cleaning up the yard and plan on doing more tomorrow.
I have a shady spot near my sidewalk that is about 20 by 3 feet and I’d like to plant perennials. I’m thinking about hostas but don’t want to break the piggy bank Is there an online site that is reasonable?

I’m going up to Tahoe – I’ll go snowshoeing or skating while others ski, and then we’ll all make nice big dinners and drink lots of wine. Maybe I’ll take the kids sledding. It’s supposed to snow all weekend.

Oh, yeah, Jack Ohman!
I remember picking up a book of his on the remainder table for a buck called Back To The ’80s (copyright 1986, hur hur hur). (He writes pretty well, too.) 25 years later and it’s only gotten worse.
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
@jeffreyw: Kitteh! I haz a new one. He’s a handsome gray fellow with green eyes and a very polite little meep instead of a meow. We got him at the shelter last weekend. He hid all of the first day and evening, but when I woke up in the middle of that night, he was asleep on the end of our bed, so I guess he’s decided to stay. His only drawback so far is that he is completely invisible on a dark staircase, but has not yet learned that our feet cannot see in the dark.

@Phylllis: Congrats and I linked to his site. The photographs are beautiful.

I’m going to be playing with the cat and doing some cooking. I have some sous vide carnitas in the cooker, and will be putting in another batch when these ones are done. There will also be bread and pizza, probably involving some of the carnitas. Also some boring stuff like laundry.

@Comrade Colette Collaboratrice:
Buy your cat a nice collar with a bell on it. It won’t help if he decides to sleep on the stairs, but it’s very helpful for when he wants to go with you as you’re moving about the house at night. You can even add tag with his name and your phone number in case he escapes.

@Comrade Colette Collaboratrice: Yay kitteh!

I wish I could say that the weekend would be spend in fun and games. Instead, it’s a continuation of this week’s oh-so-fun chore of picking up the pieces after some low-life apparently managed to steal one of my credit card numbers.
Thankfully, the card company’s fraud detectors triggered pretty fast (personally, I think it was the two charges to skymall.com; who the Hell orders anything from SkyMall…), but it’s been a fun litany of fraud flags on credit reports and changing all the recurring charges, and of course busily trying to prep for the conference I’m going to next week.
I need a drink.

@JPL: Hostas are butt-ugly, IMO. I prefer daylilies (hemerocallis), because they’re tough, they will crowd out weeds, you get pretty flowers & you don’t even have to feel guilty about not doing ‘arrangements’ with them. But whatever plants you decide to go with, my go-to for online foliage shopping is Dave’s Garden Watchdog — their crowd-sourcing reviews are one of the things this interwebz was born to be!

No, that would be Chris Christie.

Even tho tomorrow is not gonna be as Spring-time glorius as today, I’m gonna try and get out and clean up the herb bed. Looks like the chives are finally coming up, and the parsley.
Just thinking, it was a little over two months that I had my shoulder shoved against the front door, chipping away at the two feet of packed snow with a garden trowel. Just enough to make a path for my dog to squeeze out and have a pee. The back door into the garden. Forget it. I had to take off the outside jalousie door to get at the snow.
Ugh, I still feel nervous putting the snow shovels away for the season.
Comrade Colette Collaboratrice
@trollhattan: Thanks. My husband is already on the way up, in the Subaru with 4-wheel-drive and snow tires; they’ve been on the road for nearly 5 hours already, and he says it’s a full-on blizzard over Echo Summit. I’m going tomorrow morning in the
wimpmobilePrius. I hope it will have eased off a bit by then.@Roger Moore: Excellent idea. I’ll just have to find a bell with a pleasant tone; my late kitty came with a mad scourge of an F sharp bell and I couldn’t stand it.

How prescient. On my way to work listening to NPR, one of the news casts started out; “In spite of many troubles around the world, President Obama is still going on his trip to Latin America.” I immediately thought it sounded like the type of lead off you would here on Fox News.

The fiancé is out of town this weekend, so cooking a meal for a party at my mother’s house:

My weekend:
Six – yes, SIX – world cup ODI’s.
About nine hours of NCAA wrestling nats.
Five hours of UFC goodness.
…and somewhere in there my parents are going to insist on visiting, plus I’m going to have to fit food in somewhere.
Call it 65-70 hours of sports. Who needs lousy college hoops? And thank god for DVR.

Night shift checking in.
Plans for the weekend? Work, work, work. I worked tonight–until about 20 minutes ago–and I work tomorrow from 3:00 to 11:00 p.m. Then my weekend begins. Probably will do some chores and infrastructure projects around the man-cave, spurred by the balmy weather here in NoVa. Maybe cook something semi-complicated and tasty on Sunday. Probably not much watching of the B-ball, except as background to other activities. That is all.
Steep +½ (just getting started)

The one thing I am absolutely guaranteed to not do this weekend is watch basketball — college, pro, high school, or any other kind of basketball.
Very few things are less worthwhile than watching other people exercise or play…especially when you yourself could be exercising or playing.
One of the best guidelines for a fulfilling life would be “Do, don’t watch.”

Yeah! I’m hoping next year it’ll be expanded to the bestest 512 teams – I mean programs – in the country. I’m sorry. I went to small liberal arts college.
