Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Let there be snark.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

“woke” is the new caravan.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend itself. it’s up to us.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Figured after the latest fireworks, we could use a calm sanctuary where ABL can drink her beer in peace.

Also, too- Final Four tonight. Who we rooting for?

    FTFY!

Don’t give a shit about hoops, but in case the Yankees decide to bust in on college ball in their ceaseless quest for ever-dickish behavior, I thought I’d just get that out there preemptively.

And I’m almost done with all I can do this week on building my new fence. Last of the concrete just got poured. I finish up next weekend when the last of my parts gets shipped (fucking fuckety lumber fucking yard).

The good news is that I lost less than a pint of blood and my bruises collectively are less than one square foot in size (though the one on my forearm, where the gas post hole auger hit me after I struck some unknown concrete is a frightening combination of black, purple, and green. I’ve never seen my brown hair stand out in bright contrast to my skin before. My muscles are in full-out revolt as I raced the project up a day out of concern that it’d rain.

But it’s turning out fantastic so far, so I really have no complaints.

This evening I’m rooting for the original New York Dolls. Picked up a used CD called Great Big Kiss. What a sloppy mess. I wish I would have been that cool in 1973.

Pet question: How long should I give a cat to adapt to being an only cat? Her other cat buddy passed away two months ago and she doesn’t seem to like being a solo act. She’s very vocal and wants attention but it’s not really my attention she wants. I’m vacillating between wanting to give her more time to get used to being alone and wanting to go get her a new buddy (once again making me Captain Duncel here).

There’s a distressing article in the Guardian about job center employees are tricking people into violating rules so they can be penalized and denied jobless benefits (at least for a time). According to the whistleblower (aka traitor) it’s a cost saving measure. I wonder if that is a product of who is in power in GB or just a sign that conservatism (aka bad government) is running amok outside the US too?

You’ve really got to be a lousy human being to do stuff like that. Or if you’re a Republican, I guess it’s just patriotism. No government succeeds like the government that fails. (I think the young Bobby Dylan said that.)

@MizB: OT, mostly, but I have a good friend who knows nearly everything there is to know about the NFL and nothing about basketball, either college or pro. She once confessed that she had been thoroughly confused by UCONN’s repeated appearance in the Final Four, because she thought it was supposed to be a U.S. competition, not U.S. and Canadian, and anyway, how did the University of the Yukon get such a good team to begin with?

Pulling for VCU tonight, despite Adorno being largely right about underdogs in general: “In the end, glorification of splendid underdogs is nothing other than glorification of the splendid system that makes them so.”

I guess that makes the NCAA analogous to late capitalism, which actually works now that I think about it.

We were able to tell with Keaton after Boris died because he just got more and more agitated the longer he was a solo cat. I think we were only able to wait a month or two before he drove us crazy enough to get him a kitten.

It sounds like your cat has already decided: she doesn’t like being an only cat, and she wants a cat buddy. When you go looking, be sure to mention to the rescue or shelter people that you want a cat that likes other cats. You’d hate to get a second cat that doesn’t want a buddy.

The vet wasn’t able to do much with either problem, but the limp disappeared the day after I brought home a dog buddy for him, and the rash disappeared soon after.

In 1974 the band that I’d been in since high school was sort of adopted by a singer who was into The Dolls, Iggy and Rod Stewart (when Rod was still very cool). We were playing some Dolls covers, but about half of our set was songs by The Stones, The J. Geils Band, and Free. It was a bitchin’ four-piece band.

I got freaked out at the idea of becoming a glam band (I was SOOOO closeted at the time, and back then even playing glam didn’t mean gay was cool in the Minneapolis). I really regret not having the courage to stick with that band. We were playing at the places that became the haunts for The Replacements and that scene about 5 years later.

    @stuckinred

I’ve done a similar job on an MG, although it’s considerably different in the details. Those cupped shims tend to wear out, so you replace them to remove the play from the differential.

All you haters can bite me.

The only hater that matters is the NCAA Committee on Infractions. They will catch up with you eventually, the same way they caught up with UMass and Memphis.

Y’all should never have run Tubby off. You’ll get the death penalty this time, and there will be no Jamal Mashburn and the Unforgettables to bring the program back. All you’ll have left is Ashley Judd.

The job that people usually do on the British cars, besides replacing worn out parts, is usually to change the ring and pinion in order to get a higher ratio for more comfortable highway driving. It’s not for the faint hearted. Luckily I haven’t had to do that job, since it requires quite a bit of skill to get the clearances right.

RE: the missing gear tooth. Probably left there by the last person who fixed the differential and didn’t clean it up. It’s happened to me before working on old cars, finding an extra part or fragment lurking in the bottom of the oilpan.
