Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

The words do not have to be perfect.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

The National Guard is not Batman.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Preach it, Sister Louise (my Congresswoman):

“This is probably one of the worst times we’ve seen because the numbers of people elected to Congress. I went through this as co-chair of the arts caucus,” Slaughter said, according to a CNS News report. ”In ’94 people were elected simply to come here to kill the National Endowment for the Arts. Now they’re here to kill women.”

[…..]

“You are allowed to have an abortion if you have been raped or it’s a matter of incest,” said Slaughter. “However, you have to keep a receipt. Did you know that? It’s sort of like an old German Nazi movie. Show me your papers!”

Republicans bash reproductive rights to pump up their base and get Evangelical votes, but pro-choice white suburban women ignore this and vote Republican (less than white suburban men do, but still)…for now. Every day the bucket goes to the well, but one day the bottom will drop out.

Did you folks watch the trainwreck pressor by the female GOP house members? It’s over at TPM: tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/04/house-gop-women-dodge-questions-on-abortion-provisions-at-press-…

A mind-blowing, duplicitous betrayal. They should just give it up and admit that they are a bunch of misogynists masquerading as women.

DougJ’s link is to an anti-abortion blog that includes a link to Congresswoman Slaughter’s site, to, as the pro-life blogger put it, “complain.” I made sure to take advantage of that and send an email letting Slaughter know she’s awesome.

The bottom dropped out of that bucket a long time ago for us (horror story you don’t want to hear) but we were already turning into liberals. We vote for women’s reproductive rights as much as for any other issue. We have daughters, we used to have mothers and grandmothers who raised us well.

    @Brachiator: It was a real jaw-dropper.

One of my favorite parts (from the transcript:

Asked by a reporter whether they personally supported Title X spending at stake in negotiations, which funds family planning, the group fell silent for a moment and then spoke over each other until a visibly upset Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) took the microphone.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Not Jean Schmidt! But really, uh, “ladies” the answer to that fucking SIMPLE question about Title X funding is “yes”. Not mutter, mutter, package, mutter. I didn’t hear a single clear yes in the bunch. WTF?

Kind of sad that at the end of the day, these idiots were voted in, not dropped on the US from Mars. And they get away with their distortions precisely because many of those who should be paying attention have tuned out and vote based on a backlash against those they perceive to be in control of the economy/government and the state of their pocketbooks (without regard for what exactly is causing the economic hurt they are experiencing). The union-member teabaggers in Ohio and Wisconsin should have known better, but they didn’t and now it will take some time to undo the mess the Republicans create in those states. It’s like voters never seem to learn about Republican dirty tricks and no one ever tries to show them the patterns that have existed for the last 30 years. Either that or they actually like the misery that Republicans create. I’m starting to wonder.

pro-choice white suburban women ignore this and vote Republican

I told this story the other day; when Gerry Ferraro was running for Vice President, she visited union workers in Illinois who told her they would vote for Reagan, even though they knew he was anti-labor, because America couldn’t show weakness in front of the Russians.

People don’t vote their interests and sometimes I wonder why we try to keep protecting something they clearly don’t care if they have or not.

If Democratic voters seem to want to punch hippies, why does it surprise anyone that Democratic politicians do it too?

Why is it so hard for the left to see their enemy is not politicians, it’s not even corporations, it’s the people who give the latter two enough leverage, and sometimes force them to, punch hippies.

    your enemy is the public.

@Elia Isquire: Wow. I think Sullivan needs to go back and read his blog from those 2-3 days when he was getting mail from women who had late-stage abortions and as to why they did it (i.e. because they might have died, or their infant was going to live for 30 painful minutes. He actually appeared to be developing a soul for a couple minutes way back then. Now, just unhinged.

For people who have Sullivan’s mindset on this stuff — and he’s hardly alone so, in an attempt to wean ourselves from him, let’s just go with the generalization — because politics is more or less an abstraction defined through “debating” with people in class or at dinner parties, they think that the same social manners that would apply in those situations should apply to all politics at large; and they don’t understand why anyone would use rhetoric that’s any different.

I lived in the western end of Rep. Slaughter’s “earmuff” district for 7 years (in the Allentown neighborhood of Buffalo) and, IMHO, there isn’t a Federally elected official more in tune to the needs of their constituents than the Honorable Representative from New York’s 28th District. Unfortunately I now live in the district of the detestable Rep. Higgins. An earnest Corporacrat (see: 2005 Bankruptcy bill) if there ever was one.
