Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Books are my comfort food!

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

As always, live games only. All times are EDT. Home teams are listed first.

English Premier League:

Blackpool (WLLDL) v Arsenal (WDDDD) at Bloomfield Road at 8:30 a.m. on Fox Soccer Plus. Perhaps the Gunners will actually win a game.

Aston Villa (DWLLD) v Newcastle (WDLLW) at Villa Park at 11 a.m. on Fox Soccer Plus.

Bonus Game Monday: Liverpool (DLWWL) v Manchester City (LDWLW) at Anfield at 3 p.m. on ESPN2.

Italian Serie A:

Juventus (LDLWW) v Genoa (LLWDL) at the Stadio Olimpico at 6:30 a.m. on Fox Soccer Plus.

Bologna (WDWDL) v Napoli (LDWWW) at Stadio Renato Dell’ara at 9 a.m  on Fox Soccer Channel.

Fiorentina (DWWDD) v AC Milan (WWDLW) at Stadio Artemio Franchi at 2:30 p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel.

German Bundesliga:

Bayer Leverkusen (DWWWW) v St. Pauli (LLLLL) at the Bay Arena at 11:30 on Gol TV. I wouldn’t count on an upset.

Atlético Madrid (WWDWW) v Real Sociedad (DWDLL) at the Estadio Vicente Calderon at 1 p.m. on ESPN Deportes.

    Man, an hour and no comments?

    I just want to say that I appreciate your “aggregator” rundown on the upcoming games, Randinho. I don’t get to see every game, but I try to watch at least one–or at least part of one–and your comments are invaluable.

    Looking forward to Liverpool-Manchester City tomorrow.

    Finally saw Shakhtar-Barcelona 1st leg … OUCH.

    Well, “saw” as in put it on in the background while cleaning house, replayed Barcelona’s goals, and screamed like a loon when Shakhtar missed some pretty blatant scoring opportunities.

    I dislike blow-outs. They make me sad.

    Unless my local cable company and TiVo are in cahoots to play a massive prank on me, this is listed to show on Fox Soccer Channel here.

    @Jim C:

    Good catch. Same here (on Cox Cable in NoVa).

    @Steeplejack: What I appreciate most is that there are hardly ever any of the “soccer sucks/football’s played with helmets!” comments.

    Arsenal: Again doing the least with the most.

    I wish I had any confidence that Villa was going to rally enough this season to avoid relegation… what a disaster.

    @Jamey: But football is played with helmets ;-)

    Seriously, I doubt I’ll ever give up my love for football, but I’m starting to get soccer more. Been watching the Premier League a lot this year.

    Quick question though – I know there’s no playoff in BPL, but how many games do they play in a season? In other words, does Man U have it pretty much locked?

    I’m with you Anton. Everyone keeps saying that they have too much talent to go down, but if they don’t start scoring goals, they’ll be toast.

    And Blackpool is giving Arsenal all they can handle in this second half, but it seems like Arsenal ought to be up by six.

    @Steeplejack:

    Gentlemen. It was strange because my system showed the opposite. Sorry for any confusion.

    @Jimbo:

    BPL has 20 teams. Every team plays all the other teams once at home and once at the opponent. Makes 2×19 games, or 38 games for one season.

    ManU hasn’t locked it up yet, but they will be awfully hard to catch.

    @Randinho:
    Not a problem, really.

    I just know that for about two weeks my listings have shown this game as being on FSC, while everything else on the internet – foxsoccer.com, arsenal.com (the usa version) – said what you did. Usually, it works the other way and I don’t get to watch the game at home.

    Not that it was that great of a game anyway. (Yes, I’ll take the points!)

    Randinho, will you be covering the Women’s World Cup?

    April 10, 2011 at 10:12 pm

    @Paula: I honestly don’t know. It’s not that I don’t follow the women’s game; I do, but my frame of reference is primarily through the national teams as the club level game has been largely fragmented as a result of the financial problems of the leagues.

    I may cover it, but perhaps not to the extent that I did the men’s WC.

    April 10, 2011 at 10:21 pm

    Well, I’m not going to call you a woman-hater or anything. I just want to know if BJ will be one of my WC sites this summer. :)

    In any case, I think that’s about as much expertise as I have the right to expect from anyone else, given that I personally am not all that familiar with any team other than the USWNT.

    Do you ever visit All White Kit? Or Girls in the Cheap Seats?

  16. 16.

    Randinho

    April 10, 2011 at 10:25 pm

    @Paula: I’m glad of that :-) FWIW, I firmly believe that the USWNT would have been largely nonexistent if not for Title IX.

    Thanks for the heads up on those sites. I just bookmarked them.
