Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

No Justins, No Peace

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

After roe, women are no longer free.

This Huckleberry Just has a Few Questions About Nigras

This post is in: Crazification Factor, Teabagger Stupidity

FacebookTweetEmail

I’m sure some of you have seen this before, but this 27 percenter’s statement of real American principles probably merits another viewing:

We believe in stopping their progress and starting deportations of all Muslims as soon as possible. Now, blacks. They only make up 13% of the population, but they make up 45% of the city, state and federal jobs. And we wonder why the government doesn’t work. And we wonder why blacks cause more crimes than all other races combined.

[…]If asking these questions and being good Americans makes the Tea Party members racists, well I guess this huckleberry is just a racist.

This little bit of nutpicking comes from Wonkette.

Hey, if you just go by dollar value, and count the financial sector, whites cause WAY more damage and do more crime dollar-for-dollar. Therefore, white males must be prohibited from operating banks, ever.

The fact that *this* is the base of the Republican party is the plain-and-simple why as to things like Boehner breaking with Congressional tradition and refusing to host a Cinco de Mayo reception.

As Daddy-O notes, you can’t impress this fact enough (well, upon reasonable people, anyhow).

I hope Boehner is consistent like Lou Dobbs, and refuses St Pats, Columbus, and Swedish-American Day too.

I guess April 25 is the new All Weird All Day News.

Did I miss the Balloon Juice post on Douthat’s new column?

No link, cause I save my NYTimes article links for the Krug, but DeLong summarizes:

New York Times FAIL Watch: In Which Ross Douthat Begs for Other People Go to Hell

Why oh why can’t we have a better press corps?

If Hell does not exist, Ross Douthat claims, God ought to create it–and put some of those other people in it for eternity:

“A Case for Hell: [T]o believe in God and not in hell is ultimately to disbelieve in the reality of human choices”

I’m not really sure how to broach this subject but unless the Tea Party’s technical support staff has serious problems with color correction and saturation, this guy would seem potentially to have some deeply weird identity issues.

I mean, really, if you’re significantly darker than the Schwegmann’s bag, can you really call yourself a white man?

Once again, things like this awaken in one some distrust of the Tea Party’s profession of benign indifference to race, and their statement that they care only about government waste. Also too, one might well doubt the figure he cites of the percentage of government employees who are black–not to be divisive–but out of a (perhaps) overweening concern for truth.

I mean, not ALL Tea Partyists are like this…but how do you KNOW , without getting within arms reach? Some of us have had very good, very personal reasons not to trust a group that doesn’t disavow the more extremist parts–and yet the group as a whole doesn’t seem interested in those reasons and try to blame us for our discomfort.

From a different thread, but same flavor:

Someone needs better white liberal friends. Of course they’re racist. Only an idiot would deny that.

Liberals are racist, conservatives are racist. Jews are racist, Christians are racist. Men are racist, women are racist. Whites are racist, blacks are racist. That’s what living in a racist society means. Nobody’s exempted from the culture due to good intentions.

When this stops being a conversation-ending accusation and starts being accepted as the unremarkable-and-not-even-insulting default, and a springboard-to-action, maybe we’ll get somewhere. I’m a ‘self-proclaimed liberal,’ and I don’t need to look any farther than me to find racism. I’m not gonna start wearing sackcloth and ashes about it, it’s just the fact of when and where I was raised. The idea that I can ‘stop being racist,’ or that someone in my culture ‘isn’t racist,’ is woefully naive. Not to mention beside the point. And completely unproductive.

Yes, I’m racist. If we can accept that as settled, maybe we can move on to the next question, which is, ‘So what should we do about it?’

Racists need to be pointed out and mocked as often as possible. I for one am not going to “accept that as settled.” If you are a racist, you don’t get a seat at the grown up table. Period.

Frank, I remember having enjoyed some of Niven’s fiction as a kid, notwithstanding his inability to write a paragraph and the amount of suspension-of-disbelief required to buy some of the situations he created. (Carl Sagan: “In Larry Niven’s ‘Neutron Star’ the plot hinges on the astonishing tidal forces exerted by a strong gravitational field. But we are asked to believe that hundreds or thousands of years from now, at a time of casual interstellar space-flight, such tidal forces have been forgotten. We are asked to believe that the first probe of a neutron star is done by a manned rather than by an unmanned spacecraft. We are asked too much.”). That said, I wouldn’t be able to read Niven to escape thinking about wingnuttery, given that he seems to have been something of a right-wing xenophobe for the past thirty years or so, and IIRC an anti-environmentalist more recently.

You would have to give your definition of racism and have this BJ poster give his and then argue about it.

If you think that term isn’t in dispute, heaven help you. It’s not necessary to extend its definition to exclude examples like the video above, but certainly, different definitions draw different conclusions about the difficulty of “stopping being racist”.

Josh #46 — You’re right: Niven is no escape from wing-nuttery (that’s where the beer comes in!). Thanks for the Sagan quote; damn, I miss his existence in this world!

Celticdragonchick #60 — Thank you for the reading tip! I don’t think I’ve read any McCaffrey yet, but we have plenty on the shelves here. I’m only 70+ pages into Ringworld — it does strike me already as rather misogynistic. Only male kintz are sentient… Teela Brown is frequently depicted as an intellectually uncurious… nympho. That Niven is pretty rightwing (evidently) does not surprise.

@celticdragonchick: I think ‘Brazil’ was more Aldous Huxley meets Monty Python.

Have liked Niven’s books generally. Enjoyed ‘Ringworld’. He’s no Ursula K. LeGuinn though.

@Frank W.: Teela Brown is a very spoiled young woman who happens to be supremely lucky. She has certainly lived a charmed life up to her marooning on Ringworld.

You will find out more about how & why female Kzinti are especially stupid.

True. I read a lot of the Man/Kzin Wars.

Some of the novellas in the series by various authors are pretty good.

@celticdragonchick: I’ve read them too. Enjoyed them. As far as Niven, I wish he’d explored The Slavers more, found a few more of them to use as protagonists, etc.

I guess having them all killed off 2 billion years ago is a plot twist that makes it hard to do the above.
